  • Gerontological Issues and Bengali Films: a Critical Study of Select Ageing Characters
Journal of Critical Reviews ISSN- 2394-5125 Vol 7, Issue 6, 2020 Review Article GERONTOLOGICAL ISSUES AND BENGALI FILMS: A CRITICAL STUDY OF SELECT AGEING CHARACTERS Ashoke Kumar Mandal1, Dr. Shri Krishan Rai2 1Ph.D Research Scholar, Humanities & Social sciences Department, National Institute of Technology Durgapur, West Bengal, India, Email: [email protected] 2Associate Professor, Humanities & Social sciences Department, National Institute of Technology Durgapur, West Bengal, India, Email: [email protected] Received: 14.02.2020 Revised: 13.03.2020 Accepted: 10.04.2020 Abstract Population ageing is a globally acclaimed crisis of the 21st century and for the days to come. India is undergoing unprecedented demographic changes like the dramatic increase of population of adults aged 60 and up. Better nutrition, sanitation, healthy care, education, economic well-being, declining mortality, fertility rate, and infant mortality as well, increasing age at marriage particularly among women, lead to the expansion of life expectancy. As life expectancy is increasing, so also different types of problems on the physical, psychological, social, economic levels are rising up. The impacts of modernization and globalization leading to proliferation of old-age homes, changing family values and structure, overseas migration cannot be denied here. In this paper the gerontological issues have been focused in the lives of four select characters in the Bengali films Benche Thakar Gaan (2016) and Mayurakshi (2017) to show their challenges and struggles to overcome. This paper contextualizes the issues and shows the relevance in the present socio-cultural and economic fabric. This paper also puts stress on the policy initiatives, successful ageing and the united efforts of the society with a hope of creating a good atmosphere favourable for all round development of the elderly.

  • Chapter 6. Re-Reading Select
Re-reading Select Sherlock Hohnes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 296 CHAPTER 6. RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine.

  • Police-Detective Relationship in the Detective Stories Of
VEDA’S JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (JOELL) Vol.5 Issue 1 An International Peer Reviewed Journal 2018 http://www.joell.in RESEARCH ARTICLE POLICE-DETECTIVE RELATIONSHIP IN THE DETECTIVE STORIES OF SARADINDU BANDYOPADHYAY— A POSTCOLONIAL APPROACH Sunit Kumar Barui (Research Scholar,Seacom Skills University.) Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT As the generic nomenclature suggests, detection of the criminal constitutes the chief narrative interest in a detective fiction. In Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s detective stories that palpably bear the impress of the classical detective fiction, crime and criminal are treated as an infection in the society that needs the healing touch of the private detective, Byomkesh Bakshi, for restoration of status quo. Prevention and investigation of crime and protection of the innocent are the official assignment of a law enforcing authority. The private investigator and an investigating police officer operate in the same direction, though their methodology, commitment and competency level differ significantly, prompting thereby a mutuality of clash and coalescence in their relationship. The present paper invokes the spirit of postcolonial criticism that encourages ambivalent mechanism in any decolonization agenda, to study the political import of police-private detective interaction in select detective stories of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. Keywords: Detective, Postcolonial, Police, Crime, Ambivalent. ISSN 2250-3366 eISSN 2394-6075 ANANDA DAS GUPTA Byomkesh Bakshi of Kolkata and the Sleuth on the Baker Street Abstract For 80 years, Byomkesh has been Bengal’s favourite literary character, his only competition coming from Satyajit Ray’s Feluda who made his debut in 1965. However, there is a crucial difference between the two. The Feluda stories were written for teenagers; whereas Saradindu Bandopadhyay wrote for adults. The mysteries that confront Byomkesh quite often hinge around lust, adultery, promiscuity, even incest. This paper analyses the annals of Byomkesh in the context of the works of the international masters of mature detective fiction, such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Raymond Chandler. Keywords: Byomkesh Bakshi, detective stories, Feluda stories, Satyajit Ray, Saradindu Bandopadhyay, Bengali literature, Indian English literature. The Feluda stories were written for teenagers; so Ray had to work within a set bandwidth—no crime could have a sexual angle to it (Ray even complained that this significantly restricted his freedom to plot the stories).
