Referring to himself as a truth seeker in stories, Bakshi is known for his mastery of observation, logical reasoning and criminology, which he uses to solve complex cases, usually murders. The character is often referred to as the Indian version of Sherlock Holmes. Originally appearing in the 1932 story Satyanweshi, the character's popularity has increased significantly in Bengal and other parts of India. Although it gained immense popularity in the Indian subcontinent with the film Chiriyakhana directed by Satyajit Ray, the script charadend himself, with Uttam Kumar depicting Byomkesh. Both names by Bykkesh have since entered the Bengali language to describe a man who is both intelligent and observant. It is also used sarcastically meaning who declares the obvious. The character of Sharadindu Bandypadhiai is the most famous fictional character Of Boekkesh Bakshi first appeared as a character in the novella Satyanweshi (Inquisitor). The story takes place in 1932 in the Chinabazar area of Kolkata, where the non-governmental detective Byomkesh Bakshi, thanks to the permission of the police commissioner, begins to live in a mess in the area under the pseudonym Atul Chandra Niyegi to investigate a series of murders. Most of the stories are written from the perspective of Ajit Kumar Banerjee, who meets Byomkesh in a mess in Chinabazar. Byomkesh later asks Ajit to live with him in his three-story rented on Harrison Road as his assistant and chronicler. The only person in his family is his companion Puteram. At the beginning of the story, Bykkesh Bakshi is described as a man of twenty-three or twenty-four years who looked well educated. Byomkesh is a Hindu and wears a mostly white shirt/jacket with white dhoti, sometimes draping a headscarf. He does not live in luxury, but has numerous books. He often travels, does not own a gun and does not consider himself an expensive assistant. He usually smokes and drinks tea with milk. He is fluent in Bengali, Hindi and English. Bykkesh doesn't like being called a detective, and thinks the word investigator is even worse. So he wrote out a new name for himself, which he put on a brass plate in front of his house. The plaque read: Boekesh Bakshi Satyanweshi (Inquisitor). Family Unlike other main characters in detective fictional stories, Byomkesh Bakshi marries, ages, and contemplates material things such as buying a car. Later, he also decides to buy land in Kyatala in southern Kolkata and moves into his new home. Boehkesh meets Satyabati, his future wife and sister of the accused Sukumaran, in Artamaartham. The story of Adim Ripu gives some information about Bykkesh's early childhood. His father, Mahadev Bakshi, was a math teacher at school and practiced The Sanhya Philosophy at home, while his mother was the daughter of Vaishnavit. When Bemkesh was seventeen years old, his parents died of tuberculosis. Later, Bykkesh passed the university with a scholarship. During World War II and after India gained independence, Byomkesh, Satyabati and Ajit live in the mess house Harrison Road.Byomkesh gradually ages through the series, and has a son named Khoka (Little Boy) in the series. Byomkesh stories Saradindu Bandopadhyay wrote 32 Byomkesh stories from 1932 to 1970 until his death. In his early stories, Ajit Kumar Bandhopadhiai is described as his companion and chronicler of his stories. But in some cases, Ajit also investigates in the absence of Bykkesh (examples, Makorshar Roche, Shoilo Rahashya). All stories are written in the traditional formal Bengali language. However, later stories move on to more colloquial language. More recent stories (Room Nombor Dui, Chhlonar Chhondo, Shajarur Kanta, Benisonghaar and Lohar Biskut) are not written by Ajit, who was involved in his publishing business. The stories are not very complex, but very attractive, with a long series of amazing events. The stories represent 10 crimes from the first story, Satyanweshi, where Byomkesh destroys international drug racket, for domestic secrets and crimes like Arthamanartham and Makorshar Roche. Sharadindu did not want to continue the stories of Bykkesh, because of which he stopped writing from 1938 to 1951. During this time, he started writing scripts. movies in Bombay. After his return to West Bengal, Boekesh's stories were still in demand, so he wrote Chitrahor (Picture Imperfect) in 1951 and other stories gradually in 1970, when his last story bisupal Badh (The Assassination of Bishupal) was left incomplete due to his untimely death. The list of stories there are 32 published and 1 unpublished Byomkesh Bakshi stories. The list is organized in chronological order. The color key points to history. points to a novel. points to unfinished writings. The story is an old Bengali noir, head-on with murder and cocaine and the moody menace of the dark alleys of Chinatown. It ends with two bachelors becoming firm friends and moving along in a dig at Byomkesh on Harrison Road. The Gramophone Pin MysteryA spot, a classically noir mystery with a cyclist killer who kills for hire. Re-reading Select Sherlock Hohnes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 296 CHAPTER 6. RE-READING SELECT SHERLOCK HOLMES AND BYOMKESH BAKSHI STORIES: - Several Sherlock Holmes narratives other than A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and 'The Adventure of the Three Students", are also replete with Arthur Conan Doyle's anti-subaltern and Orientalist ideologies. Likewise, with the exception of "The Inquisitor", "The Gramophone Pin Mystery", "Where There's a Will" and "Picture hnperfecf, several other Byomkesh Bakshi nairatives assert their author's anti-imperial stance and exemplify specific areas in which the Bengali inquisitor challenges the hegemony of the Eurocentric detective stories, particularly the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kshetra Gupta observes, "Like Saradindu, his detective...[and detecdve stories are]...overwhelmingly Bengali though belonging to a later generation" (Gupta, Satyajiter 8). As demonstrated before, the Byomkesh Bakshi stories written before 1947 banish the colonisers from the Indian colony they themselves have so strenuously developed and modernised, and the remaining twenty three written after the Indian independence develop the former colony as an independent nation with an independent Bengali literature that has, even after being permeated by the colonial conventions, retained an Indianness and has developed itself as an alternative power against the British detective stories like those written by Doyle, Agatha Chiistie and G.K.Chesteiton. Re-reading Select Sherlock Holmes and Byomkesh Bakshi Stories 297 Doyle's support of the British colonial expansion and his advocacy of the domination of the Orientals are also present in "A Scandal in Bohemia", the third story of the Sherlock Holmes canon to be first published in the July 1891-edition of The Strand Magazine.

  • Police-Detective Relationship in the Detective Stories Of
VEDA’S JOURNAL OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (JOELL) Vol.5 Issue 1 An International Peer Reviewed Journal 2018 http://www.joell.in RESEARCH ARTICLE POLICE-DETECTIVE RELATIONSHIP IN THE DETECTIVE STORIES OF SARADINDU BANDYOPADHYAY— A POSTCOLONIAL APPROACH Sunit Kumar Barui (Research Scholar,Seacom Skills University.) Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT As the generic nomenclature suggests, detection of the criminal constitutes the chief narrative interest in a detective fiction. In Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s detective stories that palpably bear the impress of the classical detective fiction, crime and criminal are treated as an infection in the society that needs the healing touch of the private detective, Byomkesh Bakshi, for restoration of status quo. Prevention and investigation of crime and protection of the innocent are the official assignment of a law enforcing authority. The private investigator and an investigating police officer operate in the same direction, though their methodology, commitment and competency level differ significantly, prompting thereby a mutuality of clash and coalescence in their relationship. The present paper invokes the spirit of postcolonial criticism that encourages ambivalent mechanism in any decolonization agenda, to study the political import of police-private detective interaction in select detective stories of Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. Keywords: Detective, Postcolonial, Police, Crime, Ambivalent.
