Club Service Chair Alan Young February 1, 2019 SpeakerCaptain Marc Stern Club Programs Chair By Virginia D Smith on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 Captain Marc Stern, United States Navy, gave a fascinating presentation on the role of submarines in the national defense. Captain Stern is a 1989 Charles Melvin Fields graduate of UC Berkeley and will retire this summer after serving our country International Service Chair for 32 years. Currently, he is the Commanding Officer of the North Carolina Piedmont Consortium supervising the Navy ROTC programs at UNC, Duke and NC State. Of Course, Carolina students are his favorites (our added Lorenzo Mejia editorial comment). Youth Services Chair Captain Sterns love of and pride in nuclear submarines was obvious throughout the presentation. He served on seven submarines throughout the world and as the commanding officer of the USS Topeka, where he is believed Robert B. Ward to be the only officer to direct the launch of a Tomahawk missile for a blowup of a home target (video of iPast President the explosion and his precise splitting of the target was amazing). Captain Stern noted that the key attributes of nuclear submarines are their stealth capability and Nathan Byrd endurance, fire power and speed. Submarines can stay submerged for months at a time making their Asst Governor own water and power. He said commanders of other armed forces often note the need for more submarines. Submarines are involved in high interest events with Russia, China and North Korea highlighted. China is aggressively building five new submarines annually compared to two new ones by the United States. He also briefly highlighted the force missions of submarines ranging from strategic deterrence to mine warfare and referenced the various submarine home ports and the four kinds of submarines (all nuclear now). Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) are becoming a part of the submarine family of systems. Members asked a number of questions related to the greatest threat a submarine faces (another submarine); the ecological effects of submarines (very minimal due to nuclear power and sonar); the mental health of the sailors (busy schedules keep them focused); the percentages of Naval Academy grads vs. ROTC grads (30 and 30 with another 30 from other); the tailing sonar systems (needed due to sight blockages); the integration of women on the subs (gone well); and his favorite submarine movies (Down Periscope and Operation Petticoat, but likes Hunter Killer for a more recent take). Our next SpeakerJessica McDonald Jessica McDonald is a professional soccer player and is a forward for the NC Courage. Voted MVP for the 2018 NWSL championship game, she led the team to its victory by scoring two of the three goals. A former Tarheel, she contributed to the team winning both ACC and NCAA tournaments in 2008 and 2009. Last month, Jessica was called up to the womens national team where she scored her first international goal (the only goal) against Portugal for the teams 500th win. Jessica will be discussing her journey in womens soccer. DPAC EventsClick to buy tickets!
