SOUTH ASIASOUTH TRENDS ASIA TRENDS August 2014 August 2014 South Asia Trends is a monthly newsletter on South Asian affairs. The purpose of the newsletter is to provide a panoramic view of important events that shape and impact the politics of the subcontinent. The effort would be to inform our readers of the domestic, regional and international repercussions of the political debates and diplomatic engagements that take place in South Asia. Compiled & Edited by: Gulbin Sultana SOUTH ASIA TRENDS August 2014 Editor’s Note rotest marches against Nawaz Sharif Government were launched by Pakistan PTehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri on August 14. According to media reports powerful sections within the Pakistan army orchestrated the protests against Nawaz Sharif government to cut him to size and get complete hold on foreign policy on Afghanistan and India and on internal security issues. Looking at the turn of events ever since, it appears that to a large extent, the Army has achieved what it wanted. Nawaz Sharif banked on the Army's support to deal with the political crisis. Against this backdrop, it was speculated in the Pakistani media that henceforth, Nawaz Sharif would be completely guided by the Army while dealing with India, Afghanistan and internal security. On the other hand, Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri failed to bring out the protestors in large numbers, which showed the lack of popular endorsement of their movement. It has now become a prestige issue for Imran Khan and he has shut the door on any honourable exit from this show.

Have You Tried Turning it Off and On Again?” Title of the paper What Do Political Parties in India Tweet? : Identifying Valence Issues in the 2014 General Elections in India Based on Tweets of Bhartiya Janta Party and Indian National Congress Author Devyani Pande Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy National University of Singapore [email protected] Friday, June 28th, 10:30 - 12:30 MultiSession 7 (Room: MB S2.105) Work in Progress. PLEASE DO NOT CITE. 1 Abstract The use of social media for political campaigning during elections by political parties has been very prevalent in the developed nations. It was for the first time in India during the 2014 elections that political parties and politicians adopted the use of social media for political campaigning. The communication by political parties and information disseminated during this period is considered an antecedent to agenda-setting in the policy process. A key element in the electoral studies and political communication is valence issues, issues for which both political parties and voters concur. This study attempts to identify and compare the valence issues discussed on Twitter by the two major political parties in India – Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC) based on the theoretical framework of valence politics involving issue competition. By using topic modeling and word associations on the software R, this study has tried to throw light on the valence issues discussed by the two parties and finds that they were rather different for both parties.

Its key objectives are to facilitate theoretical and empirical inquiry in regional political economy through its focus areas: regional politics, regional economics, regional cultures, and regional histories. Overarching ‘national’ narratives, while useful to begin with, can be enriched by taking into account the spatial variation across India and the manifest complexities associated with regional formations. CRPE aims to expand our understanding of the analytical concept of ‘region’ in regional political economy, the methodological alternatives appropriate for explaining regional outcomes, and the processes that generate observed outcomes by drawing from disci- plinary perspectives such as anthropology, economics, history, political science, and sociology. • Indian Elections 2014: Domestic and Regional Fallout
INDIAN ELECTIONS 2014: DOMESTIC AND REGIONAL FALLOUT Mr. Muhammad Shabbir Abstract The dominating story of the 2014 Indian elections was the clear triumph of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader Narendra Modi, together with a matching defeat of the Indian National Congress. In the run up to Delhi, the new political elite presided over a mix bag of two streams: the wave of ‘Hindutva’ and quest for economic revival. Interplay of the two will continue to provide a gauge for the direction of Indian politics and for the extent of their success or failure. This paper discusses the main ingredients of the election-relevant Indian scenario with reference to peculiarities and issues in the electoral process; the play of Hindutva ideology in the contemporary phase; and implications of the election results for the region and Pakistan. This discussion takes place in the backdrop of Indian political system, main players in the arena and new realities in the making. The main argument of the paper is, the success of BJP in elections offers both, promises of growth and apprehensions of decadence at domestic and regional levels. However, the reversal of economic progression or inability to deliver, can motivate the BJP to find distractions in the neighborhood. Introduction The 2014 elections in India unfolded a resounding victory for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the rise of Narindhra Modi as the country’s Prime Minister. This change in India’s political spectrum has been exceptional in an otherwise stagnant milieu of past three decades, and thus carries with it newer connotations for the country’s domestic scene and interface with the neighborhood.
