Bihar Tourism has announced the beginning of the Asia’s largest cattle fair, Sonepur mela from November 26th to December 27th. The Sonepur Cattle Fair or Sonepur Mela is being held on Kartik Poornima (the full moonday) on the confluence of river Ganges and ‘Gandak’. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over India. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches to one month. Asia largest cattle fair will be inaugurated by Honorable Sunil Kumar Pintoo in Sonepur. The upcoming Sonepur Mela is estimated to be visited by more than 3-5 million The duration of the mela festival will be for one month from November 27th, 2012 to December 26th, 2012. Sonepur Mela has its origins during ancient times when Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges. With a view to enhance and revive its importance and traditional values, Tourism Department has been assigned the responsibility this year for the first time to revive the charisma of the Sonepur mela. Bihar Tourism is all set to make Sonepur mela a huge success with giving a complete new look, keeping in mind the important primeval elements of the mela. On the occasion of announcing the commencement of the Asia largest cattle fair, Honorable Sunil Kumar Pintoo, Department of Tourism, Govt. Of Bihar tourism said “we have taken up this new task assigned to us as a challenge and my department shall not leave any stone unturned to meet with the expectations of the Honorable Chief Minister”. There would be many strategic and professionalized initiatives taken by Bihar Tourism this year for Sonepur Mela to make it a huge success in the history of Asia. They are providing the best lodging facilities in the form of Swiss cottages for the visitors to have a comfortable stay during the mela time. Swiss cottages would be a perfect blend of rural ambience with modern amenities and most of the cottages have already been booked by the foreign tourists. The tourism department is also trying for the live telecast of the mela through internet; an exclusive domain has been designed for the live webcasting. Many factors has been kept in mind for this year mela like Hygiene, layout, security, lighting, and the world class pandal to be set up in the mela. Department of Tourism have brought in many changes in the mela this year and there will be dedicated Zones for different segments like Automobiles, FMCG, Electronics, Entertainment, Kids zone, etc. The cultural pandal has been redesigned to give a new look and a renowned sand artist from Puri (Orissa) will work in front of the pandal showcasing the culture of Bihar through his sand art. There will be a hanger with more than sixty stalls of all segments under one roof. The entire mela area will be under CCTV surveillance from a centralized control room. There will also be a 3D movie theater for the kids, a mobile video wall, and movie lounge adding glamour to the Mela. Intensive monitoring of each and every finer aspects of the Mela is being done by the team of officers of Tourism Department led by D.K.Srivastava Director/Tourism. To execute each element of the Sonepur mela in a much organized manner, Bihar Tourism has also appointed a separate PR agency to disseminate The Sonepur mela information in the media on a daily basis on the other hand Govt. of Bihar have appointed a Delhi based leading Rural Marketing & Event Management Company. Every day during the fair the cultural programme in the evening for a period of three hours will be held. The known artists from Bihar would be coming to showcase their talents.
