Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Language
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Language is one of the important things in human life. As a human being, people use language to communicate to each other because it is related to human daily activities. Furthermore, language is an important instrument of social interaction. Through language, someone can also express his or her feeling or idea. As proposed by Barnwell in his book“Introduction to semantics and Translation”he defined the most important thing of communication as “The function of language is to communicate meaning of various kinds” (1980:3). Language is used to express meaning both literal and non-literal meanings. Meaning not only can be derived from hearing or reading something at once, but also by interpreting the intended meaning or hidden meaning behind it based on the context situation. According to Perrine in his book “Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense” figurative language is a figure of speech a way of adding extra dimensions to language. (1977:61) It is used by poets because figurative language can say what they want to say with interesting expression meaning by implicit and attractive rather than say it directly and flat way. Figurative language makes a poem becomes more imaginative, attractive and adds the intensity of the poets‟ feeling for poetry to convey their attitude. Moreover, figurative language is not used only in the poetry. This can be applied in the song lyric also. A song lyric, as a part of literary work which is uses literary language and ambiguously words. “As Perrine said in his book “Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense”(1997:6),literature is kind of art, usually written, that offers pleasure and illumination.Later on, most of lyrics use figurative and ambiguous languageto simulate a certain image.

The soothing voice of Young, along with his synthesized beats and notes, make this album truly unique, earning it a spot in the list of the top five albums of 2009. 4. Train—Save Me, San Francisco Although many may only know Train because of their most famous song “Jupiter,” their newest single “Hey Soul Sister” from their album Save Me, San Francisco could give “Jupiter” a run for its money. After hearing “Hey Soul Sister,” this reviewer wanted to hear what other surprises were awaiting discovery from Pat Monahan and the gang.
