Catalogue Ġuljana Masini CATALOGUE GM • Ġuljana Masini • 1554–1934 The Ġuljana Masini – consisting of 88 manuscript volumes of various sizes – enlists all the births, marriages, and deaths that took place in Gozo between 1554 and 1934. It also registers the births of Gozitans in Malta and, sometimes, even abroad. The sources for the information are the parish records. It was in 1554 that the Matrice or mother-church of Gozo started keeping such records. The Ġuljana was initiated by Notary Felice Attard (1802-1874) and continued by his son Pietro Attard (1836-1916), known as Tal-Ispettur. After his passing away, an unknown person or persons proceeded to keep the records. It was eventually acquired by Francesco Masini (1894-1962), a lawyer by profession, from the heirs of the late Pietro Attard. Three additional values of the collection are: first, a considerable number of family trees that Notary Attard compiled to clients; second, many references to contracts, donations, and other issues related to land property owned by his clients; and, third, references to such properties by their original toponym. The programme was generously supported by the United Nations Population Fund and various national institutions, in particular the "Université de Montréal", Canada and Duke University, U.S.A. Moreover, the realisation of this project has been facilitated through its co-sponsorship with the International Institute on Ageing (United Nations - Malta), popularly known as INIA/ There is no doubt that these country monographs will be useful to a large range of scholars and decision-makers in many places of the world.

  • Comparative Study in Lexical Material Relating to Nicknames and Surnames
A COMPARATIVE STUDY IN LEXICAL MATERIAL RELATING TO NICKNAMES AND SURNAMES By J. AQUILINA WE read in verse 19 of Chapter IT of Genesis that 'The Lord God having formed out of the ground all the beasts of the earth and all the fowls of the earth brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; For what soever Adam called any living creatures the same is its name'. This is the first historical record of man as a name-giver. As a name places a living, or non-living, creature, a thing or an idea, or any intellectual abstraction, within a context of recognizable reality of human experience in a way that it can be distinguished from others existing within the same, or different or kindred, category, we can say that names indi viduat ing realities or sUbjective reactions are indicative labels. In a sense the name is the thing or the person itself. Indeed, amongst savages the name is considered as an integral part of the person that bears it. As a rule, therefore, the savage prefers to be known rather by his substituted name than by his real name, the reason being that while one cannot harm him through the substituted name one can reach him and do him harm through his own name, which is his real personal identity. Hence the Maltese saying skond laqmek ghamlek 'A.s you are so is your surname'. Latin nomina omina 'names are omens', and a Kirundi saying [zina niryo muntu 'Le nom c'est l'homme' given by F .M.

St Paul, therefore, became the patron saint of Malta and the Maltese H.E. Bishop Mario Grech, Hon. Giovanna Debono, called him their 'father'. However, it has been amply and clearly pointed out that the present state of our knowledge does not permit an authentication of these alleged Mgr. Giovanni B. Gauci, Arch. Carmelo Mercieca, Arch. Unit 1 - Gozo Today Josianne Vella Preamble: This first unit brings a brief overview of the Island’s physical and human geography, including a brief historic overview of the economic activities in Gozo. Various means of access to, and across the island as well as some of the major places of interest have been interspersed with information on the Island’s customs and unique language. ‘For over 5,000 years people have lived here, and have changed and shaped the land, the wild plants and animals, the crops and the constructions and buildings on it. All that speaks of the past and the traditions of the Islands, of the natural world too, is heritage.’ Haslam, S. M. & Borg, J., 2002. ‘Let’s Go and Look After our Nature, our Heritage!’. Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries - Socjeta Agraria, Malta. The Island of Gozo Location: Gozo (Għawdex) is the second largest island of the Maltese Archipelago. The archipelago consists of the Islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino as well as a few other uninhabited islets. • Short-Term Rentals in Malta: a Look at Airbnb Listings
Short-term rentals in Malta: A look at Airbnb listings Reuben Ellul *1 Policy Note November 2019 1 * Reuben Ellul is a principal economist at the Economic Analysis Department of the Central Bank of Malta. The author would like to thank Mr. Alexander Demarco, Dr. Aaron G. Grech, Mr. Silvio Attard at the Bank, and Ms. Tania Sultana at the Malta Tourism Authority, for comments on earlier drafts of this study. The views expressed in this paper are those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect those of the Central Bank of Malta. Any errors are the author’s own. Corresponding author’s email address: [email protected] (Reuben Ellul) Abstract New technologies have affected many traditional industries, with disintermediation and innovation changing the manner in which individuals travel, commute or even purchase day-to-day items like food. While popular, many of the international technological plat- forms in popular use are hardly regulated. The short-term rental market for tourists has been fundamentally changed by platforms likes Airbnb. This study uses a novel dataset of properties available for rent in Malta during May 2019, and attempts to determine the composition, ownership, utilisation and possible revenue generation potential of these listings. This study finds the number of listings to be similar to other mid-sized pop- ulation centres in the Mediterranean. It discusses the distribution of the housing stock devoted to short-term rentals and looks at some metrics for pricing, including the pricing of characteristics, and considers the existence of spatially interdependent pricing decisions. JEL classification: Z3, Z31, R31, L83.
