MAIN MESSAGES Men were recruited to a multi-phase research project investigating their use of positive coping strategies to prevent and manage the development of feeling flat, down, or depressed. Men from around Australia participated, and in total 770 men were recruited across three phases of research. The main messages arising from the study are as follows: Men use a broad range of positive coping strategies and appear to have several on stand-by to use as necessary. Men actively engage with their mental health, through monitoring symptoms, engaging in activities to keep themselves feeling good, acknowledging signs of feeling down, proactively responding to problems with the potential to worsen their mood, and through making conscious choices about when to take action. Men make clear distinctions between prevention and management when it comes to their mental health. Good prevention is multifaceted, personal and characterised by having a routine which incorporates keeping busy, social connections, acceptance of a range of feelings, maintenance of physical health and regular engagement with enjoyable activities. Good management builds on prevention by acknowledging changes in mood and deploying additional resources to solve or mitigate problems that can impact negatively on mood. This includes taking time out when needed, talking to others and finding ways to take a new perspective on problems. The positive coping strategies used by men varied according to general health, severity of depression, history of depression, and psychological resilience. In general, those in poorer health or with lower psychological resilience used fewer strategies. The men who participated in the study were particularly open to using many different strategies (e.g. having a mentor, practicing meditation, etc.) and advocated the importance of challenging traditional notions of ‘masculinity’ to achieve good mental health (e.g. talking to others about feeling down or needing help). Hass January, 2009 ii ABSTRACT Previous studies of musical creativity lacked strong foundations in music theory and music analysis. The goal of the current project was to merge the study of music perception and cognition with the study of expertise-based musical creativity. Three hypotheses about the nature of creativity were tested. According to the productive-thinking hypothesis, creativity represents a complete break from past knowledge. According to the reproductive-thinking hypothesis, creators develop a core collection of kernel ideas early in their careers and continually recombine those ideas in novel ways. According to what can be called the field hypothesis, creativity involves more than just the individual creator; creativity represents an interaction between the individual creator, the domain in which the creator works, and the field, or collection of institutions that evaluate creative products. In order to evaluate each hypothesis, the musical components of a sample of songs by two eminent 20 th century American songwriters, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, were analyzed. Five separate analyses were constructed to examine changes in the psychologically salient musical components of Berlin’s and Porter’s songs over time. In addition, comparisons between hit songs and non-hit songs were also drawn to investigate whether the composers learned from their cumulative songwriting experiences. Several developmental trends were found in the careers of both composers; however, there were few differences between hit songs and non-hit songs on all measures.

    Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

    Book Reviews Bouillabaisse Doing What Comes Naturally: Change, Rhetoric, and the Practice of Theory in Literary and Legal Studies. By Stanley Fish.* Durham and London: Duke University Press, 1989. Pp. x, 613. $37.50. Peter Brookst Stanley Fish is a brilliant contributor to our debates about interpreta- tion. He is also relentless. Doing What Comes Naturally must reprint every word he has written over the past decade: some twenty-two essays, amounting to a book of 613 pages. The volume is endlessly repetitious, since Fish stakes out the same territory in each of the domains he enters, and makes the same moves in besieging the various citadels he wants to capture. One might wish for an essence of Fish: a short book that would set forth the argument in its general form, then demonstrate the kind of application it has to the different fields under consideration. One must instead make do with this series of interventions in debates whose original terms are set by Fish's interlocutors, but which always return to the same point. That point, over and over, is essentially this: that there is no foundation for interpretation that does not derive from the activity of interpretation itself. Since there are no independent grounds for interpretation, there is no escape from rhetoric, meaning the discourse of persuasion, the norms and constraints of which in every case are defined by one's membership in a given professional community of interpretation. The title Doing What Comes Naturally refers to what Fish in his Preface calls the unreflective actions that follow from being embedded in a context of practice.

Faulhaber A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2008 Committee: Kimberly Coates, Advisor Robert Sloane ii ABSTRACT Kimberly Coates, Advisor Icelandic pop star Björk has spent her career breaking down boundaries, blurring lines, and complicating binaries between perceived opposites. Examining a variety of both primary and secondary sources, this study looks at the ways that Björk challenges the binary constructions of “high” and “low” art, nature and technology, and feminism and traditional femininity, and also proposes that her uniquely postmodern approach to blurring boundaries can be a model for a better society in general. This study contends that Björk serves as a symbol of what might be possible if humans stopped constructing boundaries between everything from musical styles to national borders, and as a model for how people can focus on their commonalities while still respecting the freedom of individual expression.
