Attendance Number (24 hrs) Rocky Families: 970.488.7002 The first quarter is coming to a close. It is hard to believe that we are already in the 8th week of school. Attention Winter Athletes Winter season officially begins on Nov. 13, 2013. All athletes, new and returning, must read the Participation and Fees and Athletic Eligibility information found on our website under the Athletics tab. Athletes are responsible for knowing these policies.

Please note that most winter begin with conditioning camps the week or two before the official start time. See website for specific information or contact appropriate coach for athlete is interested in.

If you have been an athlete this school year and your physical is current, be sure to stop by the athletic secretary's desk to pick up a new "Permit to Practice" card before try-outs. Please don't wait until try-outs to pick this up!

If you have not participated in a sport this school year (2013), you must turn in all appropriate paper work (physical w/ doctor signature on the newest version & "OCR Medical Information Card" - these can be accessed on our website or picked up in the main office) and get your "Permit to Practice" card. This must be obtained before try-outs. Please don't wait until the first day of tryouts to turn this in! Incomplete paperwork will delay participation.

Wellness Corner

Wellness Tidbit: In a recent CDC report, obesity rates declined for preschoolers in several states for the first time in decades. Colorado actually showed an increase in obesity rates in the same study. While we continue to be the thinnest state in the nation, our obesity rates are still increasing at an alarming rate.

What can we do? We are fortunate to live in a bike- friendly town. Check out these amazing resources on bike safety and biking resources:

 Safe Routes to School http://www.fcgov.com/saferoutes/  BPEC The Bicycle and Pedestrian Education Coalition http://bpeclarimer.wordpress.com/  Fort Collins Bike Library http://www.fcbikelibrary.org/index.php  Bike Co-op http://fcbikecoop.org/

Final Thoughts: Get on your bike – whether for transportation or recreation. And in case you were wondering, helmet use is cool these days . . . even if it gives you a bad case of helmet hair!

Rocky Adopt a Family Program

Rocky is heading into the 18th year of our Adopt-A-Family program. This school- wide service project was started by a Rocky student in 1996 and continues to be coordinated by students and staff members. Homerooms and school organizations “adopt” a family and try to fill as many needs as possible on each family’s checklist. Everyone at Rocky gets involved in this project in some way or another. The families who participate have been referred to us by social workers, counselors, teachers and community outreach workers. They are identified as those most in need and our assistance is very important. Last year we adopted 80 families, which included 380 adults and children. Donations of cash and gift certificates amounted to more than $10,000. We estimate the food, clothing and household items collected were worth well over $40,000. Teachers tell us that students who don’t usually participate in any school projects or activities are often motivated to help their “adopted” family. Students will learn about their families in their homerooms in mid-November. Families will be receiving their donations on December 14.

If you are part of a business that is interested in donating food, clothing, small household items or cash to the RMHS Adopt a Family program please contact Pam Kilness at 488-7029.

The Lobos Care Fund

Did you know that Rocky has its own in house non-profit fund that supports its students? The Lobos Care Fund assists students who have a special financial request that can’t be met from other resources in the community. We help with items such as medical and dental expenses, sport physicals, medications, school supplies, graduation supplies, and numerous other forms of support.

We raise all of our own money to support these students in need and grant roughly $3000 - $5000 in assistance to our Rocky students and community each year. Please consider helping The Lobos Care Fund by giving a tax-deductible donation. Donations can be made in the Rocky Mountain High School bookkeeping office (Cindy Evans) for The Lobos Care Fund. Contact Tyler Nickel (488-7009) or Susan Takahashi (488-7026) for additional information.

Thank you. We couldn’t do it without your support!

PaCE Student of the Month Logan Lynch, a dedicated high school PaCE student, was hoping to gain work experience through an internship. Her hope materialized this year, as Logan is currently working for Hewlett Packard.

Logan joined PaCE, which provided her the necessary tools to look for an internship. Logan is currently an Inventory Specialist at HP, working 2-3 days a week. She is in charge of making invoices, working in labs including, testing software, and building up grade system amongst other duties. She was offered the to continue her internship throughout college, in her field of interest.

Logan believes it would have been difficult for her to find an internship by herself and is grateful for the Job Workshop offered at RMHS by Larimer County Work Force Youth Services (available at Rocky every other Friday—students can sign up on Naviance to attend and will get pizza provided).

Wendy Mixon, Logan Lynch’s current mentor at HP, was impressed by Logan’s skills, by her preparation, and by the confidence she projected at the interview. Hewlett Packard looks forward to continuing their partnership with RMHS and mentoring students like Logan Lynch in the PaCE Program.

Rocky Mountain High School Positive Behavior and Support Team The Rocky Mountain High School Positive Behavior Intervention and Support team is a group of faculty and staff at Rocky who are committed to recognizing, rewarding, and encouraging positive student behavior. Just like the history, mathematics, and language arts we teach at Rocky, we believe that teenagers need consistent, healthy, social- emotional education at school. Last year we kicked off the Lobo Character First Program to provide our staff members with a convenient tool to recognize and celebrate student success. Each month, every staff member is given 10 tickets to hand out to students who exhibit positive character traits. Students who are given a ticket bring it down to the main office to enter a drawing for prizes which are given out during each quarter. This is where we could use some help. Last year, we received generous donations from members of our community who are partnering with us in this mission, and this year we are hoping to expand the program to include a greater number and diversity of available prizes. If you would be interested in donating to the program, or would be willing to help us market the program for donations, please contact Rocky’s Deans of Students, Jan Harrison (970-488-7192) or Russell Stapleton (970-488-7155). We appreciate your help in recognizing students for living the Lobo Way!

LOBO Peace Circles Return This November!!

Lobo Peace circles will be held on Tuesday, November 12th!!! Please save the date!

Rocky Mountain High School has been hosting Lobo Peace Circles within our school community since 2004. This Rocky tradition is highly respected by all participants. It has been an effective vehicle for promoting the “Lobo Way”, giving students a sense of equality, acceptance (anti-bullying) and enhancement of our positive school climate. Lobo Circles’ goal is to break down barriers and build bridges through honest dialogue. The circle fosters connections among our diverse group of students and promotes a greater sense of understanding and respect for one another. Peace Circles is a great opportunity for students to reveal who is “Behind the Mask” that they wear every day.

This is an all-day event, open to all students who make arrangements with their teachers and have a signed permission slip. Students who choose to participate will be school excused and must commit to staying for the entire day. They should make prior arrangements with their teachers to get assignments and turn in make-up work.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided!!!
