Career transitions of professional athletes Review : Sociology and Philosophy A study on professional athlete career transition: an overview of the literature Keiko Jodai* and Haruo Nogawa* *Graduate School,School of Sport and Health Science, Juntendo University 1-1, Hiragagakuendai, Inzai, Chiba, 270-1695 Japan [email protected] [Received February 25, 2011 ; Accepted August 22, 2011] Since the 1990’s, there have been many research studies that focus on career transitions for professional athletes in Japan. The main reason for this is that during that period, amateur sports teams, such as soccer and basketball, were spun off from divisions of companies to become separate professional teams. Consequently, this changed forced how athletes view the transition to a second career because they can no longer count on being employed by the companies that had previously run teams as part of their corporate operations. Research studies primarily covered top athletes but did not distinguish between the amateur and professional athletes. In reviewing the assumptions and results of such previous research with respect to professional status, this study will present the basic themes of such research. For example, early research investigated the actual reasons why and how athletes decide to change career; whereas later research seek to study how athletes specifi cally deal with career changes. Finally, in order to determine the effectiveness of actual support programs, the authors of this study proposes that more thorough investigation is needed to scrutinize how the career transitions of ex-professional football players have changed over time by using a “longitudinal” analysis. Well into the 1950s, there was gen- der discrimination in sports. Girls were consid- ered too fragile and sensitive to play hard and to play well. But one woman astonished everyone. In fact, sportswriters and broadcasters in this country agree that Bobbie Rosenfeld may be Canada’s all-round greatest athlete of the twen- tieth century. Bobbie excelled at hockey, bas- ketball, softball, and track and field, and she became one of Canada’s first female Olympic medallists. Just as remarkable as her talent was her extraordinary sense of fair play. She greeted obstacles with courage, hard work, and a sense of humor, and she always put the team ahead of herself. In doing so, Bobbie set an example as a true athletic hero. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: Like Bobbie Rosenfeld, Anne Dublin came to Canada at a young age. She worked as an elementary school teacher for over 25 years, and taught in Kingston, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Nairobi. During her writing career, Anne has written short stories, articles, poetry, and a novel called Written on the Wind. Anne currently works as a teacher- librarian in Toronto. The adventure you and your child are about to embark on will be a very special one. (Yes, it will be your adventure too!) Over the years, we have had the pleasure of watching many children learn, grow, develop, and mature into confident young adults who are ready to face the world. We look forward to the unique opportunities which working with your child will present. This undertaking will give your child a stage on which to develop his confidence, poise, individuality, mental and physical discipline, determination, appreciation for dedicated effort, and self-respect. Your child will mature among individuals and circumstances that will demand his finest efforts and judgments. He will develop close relationships with other young athletes who demand the best of themselves and expect the best in others. Educational opportunities will be made available which will compliment and enhance the experiences he will have in the gym. Above all, he will have tons of fun! We would like to personally congratulate each and every one of you for choosing gymnastics for your child. Gymnastics is the greatest overall body conditioning activity that you can have your child involved in. A study was done testing the components of physical fitness (strength, flexibility, coordination, etc.) of a number of college athletes involved in various sports. When the totals were added up, gymnasts proved to be the most physically fit. Some of the physical attributes that you will find developing in your young gymnast will be: strength, flexibility, kinesthetic awareness, muscular control, muscular endurance, coordination, timing, explosive power, agility, running speed, balance, and grace. -

Historica Canada Education Portal Bobbie Rosenfeld Overview This lesson is based on viewing the Bobbie Rosenfeld biography from The Canadians series. Rosenfeld won several medals at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, the first time women were permitted to compete in track and field events. The lesson explores Rosenfeld's career and the level of acceptance for female athletes in the 1920's. Aims In a variety of creative activities, students will assess and evaluate Rosenfeld's accomplishments while considering both the historic and comtemporary role of women in competitive sport. Background "Miss Rosenfeld, who never had a coach, was that rarity, a natural athlete." -Globe and Mail In 1925, the Patterson Athletic Club, sponsored by Toronto's Patterson Candies, finished third in the Ontario Ladies Track and Field Championship. The Club managed First-place finishes in the discus, the 220-yards, the 120-yard low hurdles, and the long jump, and Second place in the 100-yards, and the javelin. All in all, an impressive showing by the "Pats," rendered the more so by the fact that the Club had but one entrant in the meet - Fanny "Bobbie" Rosenfeld. The easiest way to describe Bobbie Rosenfeld's athleticism is to say that the only sport at which she did not excel was swimming. She was the consummate team player. She dominated every sport she tried, track and field, softball, basketball, lacrosse and, her favourite team sport, hockey. This documentary is the life story of this funny and unusual woman who loved to perform for a large audience. No stage could provide her a bigger audience than the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics: the first year that women were allowed to participate in track and field events. -

ONTARIO SPORTS HALL OF FAME | Celebrating 27 Years. “1994-2021” 1 u | MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT… 2020 was a year of tremendous upheaval for our province, testing the patience and endurance of our communities as we managed through the covid-19 crisis. The priority for all of us was to focus on mitigating the spread of this virus and keeping our communities safe. To that end, we elected to reschedule our annual celebration one year out at a new venue, the John Bassett Theatre in order to recognize our inductees and special award recipients. Our annual induction ceremony and awards gala is in its’ 27th year and I offer my personal and profound thanks for your past support for our annual celebration and related community activities. This year’s OSHOF Gala will present another stellar “Class of 2021” inductee lineup including an outstanding selection of special award recipients. Whether you choose to come on board as a major partner, as a corporate sponsor or with the purchase of individual tickets for you and your guests, your participation provides invaluable support enabling us to showcase and appreciate our most recognized sports athletes, community leaders and volunteer citizens.
