It is hard to believe that we are already in the 8th week of school. It has been an interesting quarter to say the least. We have Athletics Number experienced our first heat day as well as a flood day. That being said, our staff 970.488.7016 has worked very hard to provide a positive and challenging environment for all of our students each day. All athletes, new and returning, must read the Participation and Fees and Athletic Eligibility information found on our website under the Athletics tab. Athletes are responsible for knowing these policies. Please note that most winter sports begin with conditioning camps the week or two before the official start time. See website for specific information or contact appropriate coach for sport athlete is interested in. If you have been an athlete this school year and your physical is current, be sure to stop by the athletic secretary's desk to pick up a new "Permit to Practice" card before try-outs. Please don't wait until try-outs to pick this up! If you have not participated in a sport this school year (2013), you must turn in all appropriate paper work (physical w/ doctor signature on the newest version & "OCR Medical Information Card" - these can be accessed on our website or picked up in the main office) and get your "Permit to Practice" card. This must be obtained before try-outs. Please don't wait until the first day of tryouts to turn this in! Incomplete paperwork will delay participation. Wellness Corner Wellness Tidbit: In a recent CDC report, obesity rates declined for preschoolers in several states for the first time in decades. Colorado actually showed an increase in obesity rates in the same study. While we continue to be the thinnest state in the nation, our obesity rates are still increasing at an alarming rate. What can we do? We are fortunate to live in a bike- friendly town. And in case you were wondering, helmet use is cool these days . even if it gives you a bad case of helmet hair! Rocky Mountain High School - Home of the Lobos Page 6 October 2013 Rocky Adopt a Family Program Rocky is heading into the 18th year of our Adopt-A-Family program. This school- wide service project was started by a Rocky student in 1996 and continues to be coordinated by students and staff members. Homerooms and school organizations “adopt” a family and try to fill as many needs as possible on each family’s checklist. Everyone at Rocky gets involved in this project in some way or another. The families who participate have been referred to us by social workers, counselors, teachers and community outreach workers. They are identified as those most in need and our assistance is very important. Last year we adopted 80 families, which included 380 adults and children. Donations of cash and gift certificates amounted to more than $10,000. We estimate the food, clothing and household items collected were worth well over $40,000. Teachers tell us that students who don’t usually participate in any school projects or activities are often motivated to help their “adopted” family. Students will learn about their families in their homerooms in mid-November. Families will be receiving their donations on December 14. The Lobos Care Fund Did you know that Rocky has its own in house non-profit fund that supports its students? The Lobos Care Fund assists students who have a special financial request that can’t be met from other resources in the community. We help with items such as medical and dental expenses, sport physicals, medications, school supplies, graduation supplies, and numerous other forms of support. We raise all of our own money to support these students in need and grant roughly $3000 - $5000 in assistance to our Rocky students and community each year.
