Come spend a day and learn new ideas from fantastic instructors and enjoy the fellowship of other Scouting volunteers, Scouts and parents from across the North Florida Council and from around other nearby areas.

University of Scouting is the largest one-day training event of the year that offers supplemental training courses to help enrich your unit and district programs. The training is for volunteers at all levels (Cub , Boy Scout, , District or Council) and for Boy Scouts and Venturing Scouts. Whether you are new to Scouting or a veteran, there is something for everyone.

Bring your Unit's “Leadership Team”, your youth and your parents to the Largest Training Event of the Year!

University of Scouting Midway One of the highlights at University of Scouting is the Midway. The midway will have a variety of vendors from all over North Florida and beyond, including the Scout Shop which will offer a variety of clothes, books, equipment and special sale items.

You will have an opportunity to learn about many of the local area attractions, organizations, stores, Scouting events and pick up some unique items.

Be sure to visit the Midway during registration in the morning and during your lunch period. The Midway will begin departing around 4pm.

This guide is provided to assist all Scouters, Scouts and guests to prepare for North Florida Council's University of Scouting. While we have attempted to provide as much information as possible, you may have questions. Please email [email protected] to get your questions answered.

If you are interested in teaching a class, please contact the UofS Director, Barry Wiggins, at [email protected]. Although most classes have instructors, there may still be a few that may need a back-up instructor as you never know what the future may bring. 1 | Page

EVENT INFORMATION

Who can attend University of Scouting? All adult leaders, parents and Scouts ages 11-20. All youth must be registered by a responsible adult and adult supervision must be provided for all youth by parents, guardians or unit leaders.

When is University of Scouting? Saturday, January 26, 2019. Check-In will open at 7:30am. Opening Ceremony begins at 8:30am and classes begin at 9:00am.

Where is University of Scouting? This year’s University of Scouting will be held at Eastside High School located at 1201 SE 43rd Street, Gainesville, FL 32641.

How much is University of Scouting? Free for everyone. Each participant will receive a certificate, patch, materials, handouts and lunch. Be sure bring money for Midway items.

Will there be meals served the day of the event? • Coffee, juice and water will be available starting at 7:30am to 4pm. • Lunch will be available during 3rd period OR 4th period. You will need to select which hour you would like to take your lunch in. For all day classes, please see course description for lunch period if you wish to coordinate with other participants. • MUST register to receive lunch. Walk-Ups will need to bring their own lunch.

University of Scouting Colleges

Cub Scout Adult Leader College (Adults Only) Training for leaders in the program. Courses include: Rank Adventures, Den Discipline, Blue & Gold Banquets, Summer Camps, Outdoor Cooking and many more valuable courses.

Boy Scout Adult Leader College (Adults Only) Training for leaders in the Boy Scout program. Courses include: Boards of Review, Dutch Oven Cooking, Effective Troop Meetings, Trail to First Class, Eagle Process and many others.

Venturing College (Youth Age 14 and up) Youth over the age of 14 and adults can participate in these courses that are unique to the co-ed program. Courses include: Venturing Awards and Training, Intro to Venturing, High Adventure Planning and more.

Youth College (Youth Age 11-17 Only) Scouts USA and Venturing Scout ages 11-17 can participate in these two colleges. Courses include: Eagle Scout Prep, HAM Radio, Pioneering, Backpacking, and many more.

Merit Badge College (Youth Age 11-17 Only) A variety of infrequently offered merit badges for Boy Scouts and Venturing Scouts ages 11-17 such as Dentistry, Architecture, Veterinary Medicine and more. Blue Cards are provided. *Please refer to the Course Descriptions for required prerequisites. **Attendance does not guarantee completion of merit badge. It is highly likely, if all prerequisites are met beforehand, that merit badge may be completed. However, each Scout will leave with at least a reasonable opportunity to complete the merit badge.

General Studies College Valuable courses are offered for leaders and youth at all levels. Courses such as HAM Radio, Intro to ASL, Open Forum-Family Scouting and many more. *Please refer to the Course Descriptions as some courses have minimum age requirements.

Basic Training College Position Specific Leadership Training courses for adults to complete training in Scouting position. Leadership courses offered for youth. Training Cards are provided.

Special Course Notes Introduction to Basic Blacksmithing Working with hot metal requires attention to safety issues. Hot sparks WILL occasionally fly and can burn holes in polyester/acrylic/nylon clothing or even ignite it. If your current Scout uniform is a polyester blend, please bring a change of clothes. (jeans, t-shirt, boots/tennis shoes, jacket of non-flammable material). Gloves are not required nor desired. Safety glasses will be provided. Please note that the class will be using coal forges that will occasionally produce a good deal of smoke so anyone with asthma should discuss it with their medical provider before participating. There is a fee of $45 for materials.

CPR and First Aid Training The course will cover American Red Cross CPR, AED training for adult/child and First Aid training. All materials, books, etc. will be provided. There is a fee of $20 for materials and certification.

REGISTER ONLINE! www.nfcscouting.org/university Register early as all classes are limited in size and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The anticipated large attendance requires advanced scheduling and preparation. On time registration is essential to provide you with the courses you desire. Online Registration closes on January 15, 2019 Includes lunch, handouts, a participant certificate, Degree Patch, and trained cards when applicable.

Walk-Up Registrations are accepted – Bring your own lunch (No guarantees of class availability or class provided materials)

Registration packets for those who are pre-registered may be picked up at check-in after 7:30am. Check-In will be located to the southeast side of the school next to the auditorium. Look for signs.

Walk-Ins need to report to Room #001 to the south of the Check-In area to complete a registration form and receive information on course availability. Registration for individual courses will be allowed only if the course is not full.

Lunch is provided. If you have special dietary needs, you will need to bring your own lunch. Walk-Ups need to bring their own lunch.

Please note:  NO FOOD ALLOWED IN CLASSROOMS  There is NO SMOKING allowed on campus  Childcare will NOT be available  Please bring your favorite camp chair if you will not be comfortable in school classroom seating  Bring a cup – we will have coffee, juice and water!

All participants are requested to attend both the opening ceremony at 8:30am and the closing graduation ceremony at 4:00pm. University of Scouting Degree Program

The North Florida Council University of Scouting Degree Program is designed to provide supplemental training to Boy Scouts, Venturing Scouts and adult leaders in helping to reinforce the Scouting program. It is voluntary and not required; adherence to the degree requirements is totally the responsibility of the student.

University of Scouting Associate Degree First time participants or those who have not earned an Associate Degree can earn it by: 1. Being registered and active in a unit 2. Being 100% trained in your current position 3. Complete at least six course periods of supplemental courses

University of Scouting Bachelor Degree Participants who wish to earn the Bachelor Degree can follow these requirements: 1. Earned the Associate Degree 2. Be registered and active in a Boy Scouts of America unit 3. Be 100% trained in your current position 4. Completing an additional six course periods of supplemental courses

University of Scouting Graduate Degree Studies Program All advanced University of Scouting Degrees (Masters and Doctorate) have prerequisites that must be met in the year leading up to the University of Scouting. If you are interested in earning a Graduate Degree, you will need to notify the Graduate Degree Advisor by completing an Intent to Continue Application (available online at www.nfcscouting.org/university). Participants are contacted via email to set up a meeting and provided detailed information to begin extra-curricular activities/trainings.

Supplemental Classes The qualifying supplemental classes for the North Florida Council UofS Degree Program are the courses offered in the Cub Scout College, Boy Scout College, Venturing College, General Studies College, Youth Studies College and Merit Badge College.

Enrollment Procedures All participants must indicate at time of registration the degree they are applying for. For Associate and Bachelor Degrees, the Undergraduate Degree Advisor will verify qualifications and, if requested, participants may need to provide proof of training. For the Graduate Degrees of Masters and Doctorate, participants will be contacted by the Graduate Degree Advisor who will assist the applicant through the advanced degree process.

Transfer of Credits Candidates who would like to transfer credit into the North Florida Council University of Scouting Degree Program must provide documentation of attendance at that Council’s UofS, a list of courses attended and dates of attendance. Documentation should be on Council letterhead from the Council Executive, District Executive or Council Training Chair. The candidate’s documentation will be reviewed by the North Florida Council UofS Degree Committee for placement into the Degree program at a commensurate level to that of the documented supplemental training.
