The committee discussed the significant implications this is going to have on open road racing and not least the financial viability of this. DJ to contact Andy Abbott to see what his thoughts are for road race league. LC to contact Matt Gott from BC for advice.  DJ had received correspondence from Paul Kilvington who had decided to step down as TT Secretary and organiser of the club TT Series. 8. CLUB SECRETARY’S REPORT Hull Thursday RC continues to promote and encourage cycling in Hull and East . The Club has had a mixed year starting off with some bad crashes particularly Mike Kilgour who is making a good recovery. There have been good numbers racing in all cycling disciplines such as: Road Races (locally East Yorkshire Road Race League and Ennerdale Circuit Series), Open Time Trials, Cyclo-cross, Mountain Biking and Sportives. We have had a few members leaving their positions on the committee and we thank them greatly for all their commitment and hard work over the years.

As a club we have successfully organised many cycle events Events run in 2019 include:  ‘Jim’s training rides’ (Richard Guymer)  Open TTT on the Hardriders course (Mike Kilgour)  Keith Carter RR (Lee Coulson)  The club TT series (Paul Kilvington)  East Riding Road Race League (Andy Abbott)  LVRC Vic Sutton Road Race (Neil Dean)  Open 25 TTT Humberside Championship (Richard Guymer)  Junior training series at Ennerdale Circuit  Freewheel competition (Dave Millson)  Paperchase (Doug Jaram)  Geriatrics Club Rides  President’s dinner (Mandy Dean)  Christmas dinner feast (Mandy Dean)

Road race events may become difficult to run on open roads this year with the insistence of the authorities to have marshals with a qualification. It is all a bit hazy at the moment so we will have to follow developments.

Other activities include:  Sunday club runs have become regular with two groups in the early part of the year (40mile and 60mile). Neil and Mandy have worked hard to organise and promote them. Richard has been leading the club runs in the later part of the year. It would be great to see more members coming along even if it is just for some of the ride  Saturday morning training sessions organised by Doug Jaram  Monthly e-Scene with current club information

The club incentive scheme is continuing to encourage and assist HTRC riders represent the club in cycle races. This can be attributed to helping increase our numbers of active racers.

The Club Rewards Scheme organised by Lee Coulson with assistance from Mandy Dean continues to reward club members who have assisted with organising and running club events. We have had good attendance throughout the year at committee meetings at Hull Baptist Church rooms. It’s has also been regularly supported by club members not on the committee and hope more club members will join the meetings this year. Email: [email protected] Page 5 of 28 Website: www.htrc.co.uk

9. ROAD / TRACK SECRETARY’S REPORT Good participation of club members at road races and closed circuits TLI and BC, some good results too. New member Nigel competed well at EYRRL and Ennerdale Circuit Series  Ermin achieved a 3rd position at Walkington EYRRL event  Phil was competitive at Ennerdale and moved up groups at EYRRL  Ben gained his 2nd cat BC licence from some excellent racing and was a well-deserved Best Improved Rider Award  Elliot was another strong rider but has moved on to University and another Race Team for next year  Lee didn’t hit the heights of 2018 and has moved back down to 3rd cat for 2020  Mark rode well at EYRRL  The WhatsApp race chat group has been informative

10. TIME TRIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Paul has stepped down as TT secretary after many productive years particularly organising the popular Club TT series, we thank him greatly for all his hard work. Doug Jaram will now be filling the role and with the assistance of Richard Guymer are organising this year’s Club TT series. Application forms have been circulated and they are making progress with Risk assessments and traffic counts for each circuit new and old. The local 10 league ran this year with some of our members taking part. The main open TT riders last season were Jymmy Trevor, John Sav, Andy Carroll, Mandy Dean, Doug Jaram and Richard Guymer. It was agreed by all attending that two new stop watches can be purchased. JS to investigate suitable models.

11. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICER’S REPORT Lee and Chris have both been on courses and passed their BC Level 1 award, 1st Aid and Child protection. They can now start putting together a programme of activities for youth cycling. They will require a traffic free all year area to run these activities. Possible Sunday rides. They will be starting at primary school level and have 8/9 youths keen already.

12. INTERNET EDITOR’S REPORT We thank Chris Brown for all his work running and maintaining the club website for the past years. Mark Mckeown, with assistance from Richard Dean, are willing to continue the good work.

Tillie and William’s New Year Cyclocross Adventures: Rob Jennings

Well Father Christmas must have received Tillie and Williams’s letter this year, he brought them both new bikes. It was off with the wrapping paper and straight to the next round of the YCCA Yorkshire series.

It was a trip up the A1 to Knaresborough on a stunning winter’s day. Both kids were using their new bikes for the 1st time. It must have been a big boost for William, because as the race got underway, he was off! After the 1st lap, William was in front of big sister Tillie. As the race got went on Tillie was gaining more confidence on her new bike, she picked her way thought the field and finished 2nd girl. William had a great ride and finished 6th boy.

The next round took us to the challenges of Peel Park, Bradford. This was a race to forget for Tillie. She had a mechanical off the start and had ground to make up. She finished 5th girl and found the tough off camber bankings and long climbs a new challenge. William came 12th boy and fell off 3 times on the off camber bank the kids did.

Youth Scene Jan-Feb 2020 HULL THURSDAY Road Club

The final round of the series took us to Wath upon Dearne, Barnsley. A quite controversial start to the day with many disgruntled parents raising concerns of the safety of the course for the under 8s. Some parents turned away and wouldn’t let their kids race, however, thankfully the commissaires got fed up of seeing kids and some adults rolling down banking with their bikes closely following and made changes to the course.

On what was still an incredibly tough course both kids did really well and completed the race. William came 5th boy, much to his disgruntlement, as he said the Shibden rider cheated by cutting the course each lap in front of him. Tillie finished the season with another place on the podium in 3rd place.

It’s fair to say that both Tillie and William have enjoyed their 1st ever season competing. Both kids have come on so much since the 1st round back in September and are looking forward to a few track races in the summer. Big thank you to Mandy for the jersey for Tillie.

I would certainly recommend cyclo-cross for kids looking at getting out on their bikes. It’s fun and challenging for them within a safe environment should they have a spill. It would be great to see many more little Thursday’s riders at the events.

Saturday Chain Gang: Doug Jaram

For those who are wondering what goes on during chain gang and possibly contemplating coming along here’s what happened yesterday.

We met at the Duke in North Ferriby. We have met outside Vive le Velo before but it sometimes clashes with their shop ride. I vary the meet point from week to week according to weather. We have done North, East, South and West but mainly South and West due to the prevailing wind direction.

We went off steady doing 5 min turns on the front riding 2 abreast. This continued until Walfingden Lane towards Newport at which point we started steady through and off. The emphasis here is on being as smooth as possible. It started a little surgey as people think they must come through quickly which only means the rider behind tries to follow. After observing it settle for a while, a word with a couple of riders tweaked it to silky smooth this week. The best I've seen any chain gang in fact. So pretty much a constant lower tempo effort for me.

Upon reaching a quick toilet stop and debrief at the garage was held, then more steady tempo and Bubwith crossroads seemed to appear in no time. A lonely ride that stretch of road if solo. A route review was then held and most had time for a bit more than our standard imperial 50, so straight on rather than back towards Holme on Spalding. We then changed to a min on the front TTT type of chain gang which went badly to start with but soon settled in. I personally like this type as it’s good practice for 2 ups and you can go as hard and for as long as you like on the front. Mike from CRC was doing big turns and others opting for peeling off after a few seconds.

This took us back to at which point 2 had peeled off to ride solo home (not dropped) and so leaving only 4 of us to ride through Burnby, Hayton, Cliffe and back into North Cave. We did a few more efforts but mainly back to steady group riding by then. 3 of us opted for a last bash on South Cave climb followed by a full gas effort down from Weedley to empty my tank and possibly reel in a distant rider.

So there you have it; a great session to be had here guys and all done by 1pm. I post up most meeting points on Facebook so why not give it a go. Email: [email protected] Page 10 of 28 Website: www.htrc.co.uk

Roving TT Racers Report 1 of 2020 Season: Jymmy Trevor

Into the 2020 Time Trial Season we head and there are changes from 2019. On the club front we will now have a different organisation of the Club Time Trials Series with Paul stepping down and Richard G & Doug taking over this responsibility. With different organisers as you’d expect there are some changes with new courses and more standard distances. The logistics of the league appear to be the same, with points added for racing and deducted for not notifying the organisers of absences. You’ll need to help out too, which would seem a fair deal. Great news that this year there is no conflict with Ten League.

On the Open TT front for 2020, there are a few changes to note. The CTT (our governing body) have made it mandatory “to have a working rear red light, either flashing or constant, that is illuminated and in a position that is clearly visible to other road users. This will also be necessary in club events too. The same was proposed for front lights in the National CTT AGM, but this was rejected, so for 2020 season it’s just a rear light.”

Locally we have lost a few open events from the calendar, including our own Humberside ‘25’ Championships as well as other some other Spoco events. Sadly we have lost our one of our Yorkshire ‘100’ events with the retirement of Keith Lawton, which was traditionally held on the faster course. Likewise events seem a little sparse in Lincolnshire in 2020 and the ‘50’ which I competed in during 2019 has now also been lost.

On the positive side, new events are popping up too. I’d like to highlight a few Open TT events that may interest the TT racers from Hull Thursday:

 City Road Club 3-up TTT on Hardriders, Beverley. Contact Doug who is organising potential HTRC teams. (Saturday 7.3.20)  Adam Hardy’s Spoco ‘10’ on the Cliffe course. Great event last year on the Skidby course with a big turnout. Quite a few local road racers turn out to this too, so good to see how you fare against them. (Saturday 14.3.20)  Hull Thursday 2-up TTT. Hardriders, Beverley. Trophy for the fastest Hull Thursday member team. (Saturday 28.3.20). Contact Mike Kilgour.  City Road Club ‘15’ on the Newport / Gilberdyke course. Great chance to test yourself over the fifteen mile distance. Well attended event last year and well organised by Jean P. (Sunday 29.3.20).  BDCA ‘25’ on Etwall. A super fast course near to Derby. If you want a PB this is the event for you. (Saturday 4.4.20)  VTTA ‘25’. This is an event open to all ages. It’s the best ‘25’ of the season in the Yorkshire District on a fast course at a safe time of day. Great prizes and awards. (Easter Sunday) Highly recommended.  Barton ‘10’. This event is just across the bridge. Course is on B roads. Very quiet safe course. Good event. (Saturday 18.4.2020)  Vive Le Velo ‘25’. This is a TT race along the Brid road held early before the traffic. Fantastic event, organised by Ed. Last year we had numbers with your name printed on them, a

Email: [email protected] Page 11 of 28 Website: www.htrc.co.uk

pack of free goodies from Ed’s famous shop. Lots of prizes. As you’d expect from Ed a top event. (Sunday 26th April, 2020)  Ten League Series. Geoff returns with the 4 race series that many members rode last year on the Gilberdyke ‘10’ course. Sponsored by Vive Le Velo, so expect great prizes. Wednesday evening events (10/6, 24/6, 8/7 & 22/7). Not clashing with our club races this year.  VTTA National ‘30’. This is an event open to all ages. It’s the National Championship for the over 40’s too. On a safe course near Wetherby on Saturday, 20th June, 2020, known as the ‘Red Wall course’. Should be a big event. You can ride if you are under 40, but you can’t be VTTA champion, as you won’t have a handicap. If you’re going to ride then join the VTTA so we can compete as a team. I’m going to lead our team effort in this one. Look out for further details near the time.  Vive Le Velo for YCF – TIME TRIAL SUNDAY. This is a great day with a ‘12hr’, ‘100mile’ and ‘50mile’ TT all on the same course on the same day, in the Melbourne, Bubwith, Seaton Ross area. A choice of events and a chance to ride or see a ’12 hr’. A great atmosphere at this event. Both John Savage and I rode last year. More members would be great. Recommended. (Sunday 28th June, 2020)  Adam Hardy’s second Spoco ‘10’ of 2020 on the Cliffe course. Local and easy to get to on a great Spoco course. (Wednesday evening event 1.7.20)  Yorkshire ‘10’ Championship. An Adam Hardy event so will be a good one. Last year Vanessa took 3rd in Ladies race, representing HTRC. Enter and help the HTRC team. It’s local on the Gilberdyke course. (Saturday 18th July, 2020).  Closed Road Hill Climb – This event is held on the private road to Harwood House under flood lights. It about a 2 minute climb. Usually has 500 spectators, cow bells, food vans, DJ, music, etc. It’s quite an event. About 130 competitors. A good Sunday evening out. Course is OHC11 on 13th September, 2020. I’ll be there, so ask me for details if you fancy it. About 45mins drive from Hull.  VTTA ‘10’. This is an event open to all ages. On the local Gilberdyke course. Saturday 19th September, 2020.

As the ‘Roving Reporter’ I’m likely to be in ‘The Beautiful South’ with work most of the season, so won’t be able to report on all the events members ride, like I did in 2019. I’ll report on all the events I go to and report on all the HTRC member’s performances at those events. I’ll keep all informed on my races in the south too, so we can keep up to date on how HTRC are represented down south. If I’m not at a race you ride maybe you can send a brief report to the Scene Editor and help us populate the TT pages, even if only the results for the Thursday riders. Though a few words would be better.

We’ll keep publishing the HTRC TT Championship table, like last year, so all can keep up to date with standings. We’ll also publish the CTT national rankings for all of our registered members so we can see how we are doing nationally, against the other riders throughout the country. Now all that is left to say is train well and race fast. The roads can be dangerous so keep yourself safe during the season. Good luck with your Open TT racing in 2020!

Hull Thursday Paperchase 2020: Doug Jaram

Following the success of last year's event Richard and I decided we’d run another paper chase.

The event was originally due to take place in December 2019 however, due to our starter having to pull out for a new baby arrival and the appalling weather, we postponed it.

As the event approached Richard became ill and it was apparent we would not be able to lay the trail on our bikes as we have done previously. Richard therefore drove and I jumped in and out the car to lay the trail. It was quite good exercise running backwards and forwards and since the weather was kind we encountered no particular problems. We arrived at the finish pub in Newbald only to find it shut so gave us a bit of a panic only I then remembered that they didn't open until 12, so we retreated to Drewton’s in South Cave for a coffee and a teacake.

We got back to the pub in good time and within a few minutes we could see the first arrivals outside but with Phil McCormick trying the door of the pub opposite.

This was enough to give his nearest competitor Lee Coulson all the advantages needed to secure victory and this year's paperchase champion.

First lady was Angie Rawson.

Many thanks to Cliff Pratt Cycles and Viva Le Velo for donating the prizes.

The Paperchase: From the back, the middle and then the front!: Lee Coulson

So it was time for the running of the 2019 Paperchase but in 2020! It was actually the first time I’d joined one since 1995 which finished in Lelley that year and I was nowhere near first that day. Don’t get confused with my ramblings just yet, that comes later!

Weather wasn’t too fresh for January but there was a pretty rough Westerly... as always! There was a good sized group and we set off to find the trail. It wasn’t until we were nearly to Dunswell before I remembered to start my computer, and with knowing it was roughly 50miles to finish I wondered if my inaccuracies now may foul me up later. Anyway, the first big choice came in Dunswell and we were kindly shown a large cross which we presumed meant ‘no go’ and headed for Beverley, correctly. People were sort of taking it in turns on the front in the wind and also checking false trails, which generally ended pretty quickly to be honest and quicker than I recall from ‘95. I checked a false trail as the group headed down Long Lane and it amazed me how I managed to be so far behind them as I joined Long Lane and chased after them into the wind. Uffff! Back on by the train lines and others checked next few false trails and we ended up going over the Westwood and I found myself on the front with George, one to watch for the trophy in my mind. At Walkington the group split and I found the correct trail and shouted back, very helpfully! A few of us were agreeing that with 40miles left it was too early to be trying to lose ‘domestiques‘. First proper head-scratcher came at Cherry Burton where we all got to the crossroads and checked all directions but didn’t find anything. Finally some didn’t return and the splintered group headed through the village to crossroads on main road. I had it in my head that it must go to Leconfield and avoid turning left on the main road. I checked and found no trail and again found myself quite far behind the splintered group now and as I caught the back of it I saw George was trying to bridge to the lead group further up the road. I got on his wheel and let him tow me half the way then we turned off main road towards Bracken and worked together. Catching them as they weren’t going too mad yet. As we then went through Dalton Estate we tried to convince a young lad to close the gate behind us (outside Pipe & Glass) for the second group... cheeky. Rising out of the estate we could see two riders way out In front, one wearing pink and I thought... How the hell have Geoff and Angie got in front of us?! They must have stayed on the main road as we zigzagged around, but I laughed and thought they’ve missed two numbers/letters from the code we needed to collect. It turned out to not even be them!

The front group now away from the rest but we could see them across the fields. The group consisted of Paul Campbell, George Leighton, Andy Abbott, Dave Millson, Phil McCormick, Eddie Kelsall, another guy (sorry) and myself. Between Middleton and top of Nunburnholme Eddie dropped the hammer and tore off into the wind. We all left him and he was way out in front but with needing to check a couple of false trails and the wind eventually taking its toll on him we caught him. Amidst the chase Andy Abbott succumbed to a puncture and was left savagely by the road side.

We then rode the flatlands as a good team, contemplating our destination. Heading towards the Cliffe Road we considered Hotham, South Cave, Sancton, Goodmanham, Newbald and the

Email: [email protected] Page 15 of 28 Website: www.htrc.co.uk

Social Scene Jan-Feb 2020 HULL THURSDAY Road Club

mileage was ticking buy. At the triangle/fork in the road as we joined the Cliffe Road we started right then suddenly saw the correct path left and three of us jumped across the grass. Dave started to wait but Phil and I began to up the pace after realising the mileage and this could be our chance.

Dave joined us and we had a good 50m gap, seeing Paul chasing us alone and George chasing him it was our turn to drop the hammer and did chaingang to the next turn. Gambling on the route turning right towards Sancton we committed and it paid off. Pushing on more and more Dave was first to break.

Phil and I cracked the whip and convinced ourselves it was Newbald. Phil utterly sure that it was actually the Gnu Inn! We really went for it but the legs were falling off now as we hit 50miles and turned left into the village. Phil on my right I noticed the final code on the floor and kept it to myself! Through the village and the sprint began, round the corner outside the church, side by side, Phil on the right and me left. He stole a couple of metres on me and I thought, right, you swing right into The Gnu then and I’ll swing left into The Tiger. I dumped the bike, seeing Phil do the same across the road. The Tiger looked deserted, I started to ride out the car park and noticed the final arrow pointing into The Tiger! Get in!! I ran inside the pub like Annika Rice desperate for her final clue!! After checking every room I was convinced Phil was right and I was about to leave when I saw Richard and Doug looking out of the window in the Bar at Phil coming out of The Gnu! I was right and raced into the small bar area blurting out the code as fast as I could before I forgot it! Brilliant!

What a laugh. Food and drinks were good and appreciated, so was the prize bundle. The ride home was not! Burgate with stiff cold legs...

Well happy, and thankful to Richard and Doug again for their efforts. Sorry Phil, better luck next year!

Deanies Escape to the Sun … Again: Mandy Dean

We were beginning to develop web feet in December so a last minute check found that Tui had a pre-Christmas bargain. Calpe, Costa Blanca £249 (17th to 24th December) for flight, East Midlands to Alicante, transfer and 4*, half board hotel. This is a repeat of the holiday back in March so if you want to see more check out March Scene and some of the rides were repeats. It was a little cooler this time around 16C for the first couple days but up to 21C by our final day. No rain, though there was a windy day.

This year we hired bikes as I only planned to ride for 3 day and Neil for 5 days therefore the cost was similar and a lot less hassle.

We were grinning as we spotted lots of big teams, their winter training ground. Astana, Sunweb and Cofidis at our hotel! (Though they each had their own dining areas so we couldn’t chat with them over a meal  ). There were a number of Pro Continental teams who did eat in the same dining hall.

Day 1: We started the holiday tired so did a short first day, 37 miles, Port de Bernia, 3,500ft climbing.

Wonderful to be in the sun.

Coming off Port de Bernia I gave a thumbs up and smile to a FDJ guy who had been working hard to get to the top. He smiled back. It was Thibaut Pinot!!!!

Day 2: Port de Confrides, 74 miles, 7,200ft climbing

We passed through Gorga with its ‘yarn bombed’ trees then east into a super valley. Beautiful and very little traffic. It has a section that was like a little dipper, plummet down, cross the river, turn and up and if you have a bit of humph, the momentum can just about carry you over ready for the next one. 50 miles to Castells de Castells, very ready for lunch – a massive cheese and serrano ham baguette with a plate of chips and cup of tea – 5 euros!

Tired so very glad that most of the 25 miles home were downhill

Day 3: Windy! The palm trees going crazy. The cycle hire were brilliant and let me return the bike for the day and collect for my day 3 the next day. Really impressed. I went for a run along the coast and Neil headed off to do hill reps. Said he didn’t get blown around!

Day 4: 51 miles, 4,200ft climbing. The usual route out via Benissa then headed through the valley of the Gorgos river which is fabulous. After this we wound our way up and up through a town lined with orange trees. Very pretty. We planned to lunch at Parcent but it was closed  but cheered up as we left Benissa when Julian Alaphilipe passed us chatting and looking really happy. My final cycle day, time to run.

Day 5: Neil headed off to the Col de Rates & Port de Sa Creueta, 71 miles, 6,100ft climbing. Went up Col de Rates from Parcent, having only done it in the opposite direction before, which was a long steady ascent. The main interest on the climb being the FDJ rider who was doing sprint reps up the hill – he would go tearing past at some ridiculous speed, virtually grind to a halt, I would pass him while he stared at his handlebars, and a minute later he would go tearing past again. Repeat, repeat etc. I’ve no idea who he was.

The roads were quiet apart from the classic sports car rally that overtook me, then slowed me down on the descent from Rates. The deserted fast descent from Sa Creueta had some surprisingly tight bends and was most exhilarating!

Whilst I ran up the Ifach – this amazing lump  Just 6 miles but I worked hard on the ups. It left plenty of time to enjoy the sun in the afternoon.

Day 6. Neil walked the Ifach whilst I had my big run up the Cim d’Olta. I texted him when on top to say I could see him and he should wave back 

Sunday 26th January Club Ride: Geoff Rawson

Having noted that there was a running event on, we sent a message to the runs leader Richard and arranged to meet everyone at High Hunsley cross roads Thus avoiding having to interfere with the runners, (also Angie got an extra 10 minutes lie in).

There were hundreds of them enjoying a crisp morning run. Who should we come across but Amanda who was very near the front of the pack waving and smiling, how has she got the energy to do both and run we asked?

Blood test at the cross roads and already jelly baby time. My quote “Jelly Babies save lives”. We were just sorted when Angie and I looking back down the road saw the group approaching at a steady pace. It was encouraging to see a large group out.

Joining on the back we made our hellos to all. A swift decent into Newbald on damp roads with the wind behind us.

Leaving the village Doug and Steve set off to do their own thing. An easy pace for us in the tail winds (this is easy) on to Sancton where Andy and Tim did their own thing as well and headed to the Fiddle Drill, Goodmanham, for early coffee and cake, and why not? They had ridden with us and we had enjoyed their company; so they had earned it.

On to Bunny Hill where I always stop to recheck my fast dropping blood glucose levels. No problem as long as I keep monitoring and sampling my blood and correcting to keep them from dropping, although my bloody finger was a mess as in the chill it wouldn’t stop bleeding after testing.

Now down to seven riders we rode on to Everingham. As we headed towards York, Neil turned off at 11 am; he had told us earlier, as he had commitments. Possibly taking Mandy for a well- deserved pub lunch after her run??

Out to Sutton on Derwent we went taking steady turns at the front in true club run fashion. New member Cheryl and I doing our turn from Elvington to York it started to rain lightly as we reached the outskirts of the town. Down the excellent cycle tracks into the city centre.

I was leading here as I know the way through the university campus to the Millennium Bridge and the super Cycle Heaven café, via our own set of cyclist traffic lights. The café was packed with other club run riders from all points, some starting and finishing at the café and others like ourselves, making it the lunch stop.

Angie and I were able to control ourselves and did not make any unnecessary impulse purchases this time. We once did a ride here on bikes and managed to buy a cruiser bike we didn’t know we needed until we saw it, and bought it then and there. That day we had a third bike to get home!

Richard had arranged the forecasted heavy showers to take place whilst we had our coffee and sarnies. Nice. And so to a ride home in cold but drying weather making our way out of York via Naburn Lock and over to Eskrick the only real headwind bit of the day, but taking short turns on the front this was soon over.

Back via Sutton on Derwent and down towards Allerthorpe, Angie and Andrew did a longer turn as the wind was right behind us. We then made our way over back to Everingham and retraced towards Beechwood Café. Here another blood test and “oh my giddy aunt “Angie said when she saw my BG level and how low it had got. Still everyone was great and offers of gels came from everyone - thanks.

Onto the Cliffe Road and we were all feeling tired, Cheryl now said she was up to her longest ride this year (well done!) but with the shelter and support of us all she felt it wasn’t going to be an issue to get to Beverley.

Angie and I left the riders at Hotham and made our way home as it finally started to drizzle. Thanks to everyone for their participation and another great Club ride under the belt - the miles go easier in a group,

Another good route Richard and thanks for keeping the rain off us

Thursday on Thursday (or sometimes Wednesday....or Friday) Phil McCormick

Big developments on the Thursday ride, there are now 3 people receiving a weekly text and a logo for Facebook, courtesy of Doug Jaram- Thanks!

Ride #8 on 12 December took Neil and me over the bridge on a 40 mile loop including Melton Ross. On the way out we were also joined by Ed Neilson and one of his Vive le Velo club mates.

No ride on the week of the 17th – had to go to work!

#9, possibly 40 people riding today, that could have been because the Boxing Day 10 fell on Thursday. I tried to defend my title but I lost to the better man. Congratulations Richard Dean!

#10 First ride of the New Year and a 44 mile loop over the bridge with Neil

#11 The first showing of the ‘Thumbs up Thursday’ logo in Facebook (Thanks for finding this Doug!). 5 people out (Neil, Lee, Nigel, Ian and me) for a 50 mile loop around the Cliffes and the Caves.

#12 Wednesday 15th this week. Mandy, Neil, Ian and I had a 55 ish mile ride over the bridge with a café stop at the Barton nature reserve on the way home.

#13 Mandy rode with us for the first hour as we headed out through South Cave. Neil and I went on to do a 55 mile loop around Hayton with a café stop at the Fiddle Drill.

#14 The last Thursday ride in January (30th). Shorter one today, as work got in the way of a morning departure. 35 miles doing a Cottingham, Newbald, Holme on the Wolds triangle with Lee and Neil, with quite a tough wind to contend with.

I publicise the rides one or two days before on HTRC Facebook page. If you’re interested and would like a text telling you about the rides, let me know. Phil 07753317180

ONLY 16 -DR. HOOK (8-1-20): John Ulyatt

YESTERDAY I rode to The Humber Bridge to meet the rest of THE MOTLEY CRUE. My first real ride since been struck down with the JUDGE DREADed lurgy in December. ONLY 16 in the Autobus and 5 in the Peleton.

THE LEADER was Dave T and nice to see his brother Neil out with us for the first time - Hope it's not THE LAST TIME. The weather, for a change, was on the MR. BRIGHTSIDE with just a (JOHNNY) GENTLE wind.

We rode over the RIVER OF DREAMS into Barton and passed BROWNIE (MCGHEE) who was tending to his (SAVAGE) GARDEN. Should be out on the bike Paul! Onto the ridge where a few of us were suffering due to lack of recent miles. 6 of us decided to slow down a bit and advised Dave what we doing as they headed to The Dunn Deal Cafe in Nettleton.

We PRIMAL SCREAMed down Worlaby Hill and onward past Elsham Golf CLUB (TROPICANA) into Brigg for lunch at The (BLUE) ANGEL cafe. Great place and staff with a great sense of humour. I had a sausage sarnie and a pot of ROSIE LEE = £5.25. Mark had the biggest SOUP OF THE DAY we all had ever seen. Amazing! Pete partook of his usual VICTORIA Sponge - Calorie FREE of course.

We lingered over lunch, WHY GET UP when you're enjoying the craic. When we did eventually leave, Pete had a problem with his front mudguard and 6 of us made light work of sorting.....Like Hell we did!! Took 20 minutes of faffing to sort it.

Pete brought up the (CHRIS) REA as we set off past the Garden Centre. As we approached Bigby he was desperate for a JACK DEE so we stopped in a lay-by near a KATE BUSH. There were more facilities than were expected and I said to Pete "SIT DOWN AND TALK TO ME" - some LOU RAWLS would have come in handy.

We took it steady up Bigby hill and through Melton Ross/Burnham and eventually over the bridge into The LUCKY STAR Inn/Willerby.

It had been Noel's birthday recently so he'd set up a TAB (HUNTER) at the bar. Many thanks Noel. We were back very early at the pub so a very enjoyable mish mash of conversations and many laughs.

Just the 47 miles and home for a soak listening to a playlist I've devised from Spotify, named 'Rosedale 2020' for our impending walking/drinking/partying weekend next month. LOVELY DAY. Email: [email protected] Page 23 of 28 Website: www.htrc.co.uk

WEDNESDAY MORNING – SLACKSTRING (15.1.2020): John Ulyatt

This WEDNESDAY MORNING I met Noel and Paul in Cottingham and rode to Greenwood Ave (AMEN) CORNER to meet the rest of THE IN CROWD. 5IVE in The Pelton and 13 in The Autobus. Our BIG CHIEF FUNKUM was Geoff. It was KOOL AND THE GANG were dressed accordingly.

We set off with THE WIND (CRIES MARY) at our backs. We reached (JONATHON) ROUTH and crossed over onto the cycle path to Leven, Burshill and onward towards North Frodingham. (I'M A KING) BEEford was next and we continued over the CROSSROADS to our lunch stop at Mr. Moo's in Skipsea. I had some (WE BUILT THIS CITY ON) SAUSAGE ROLLS with a pot of BRENDA LEE = £5.50. Mike G joined us at the cafe.

The sun was now out as we headed home. Lovely views of Flamborough Head as we left the cafe. The wind was now directly in our faces - a WILD WIND too! Our route back was via Dunnington and Skirlaugh onto ARNOLD LANE where some FOOL (ON THE HILL) in a Jaguar purposely drove at SPEED through a massive puddle on the narrow lane which drenched half of us. The LANGUAGE (OF LOVE) turned the air BLUE!!!

By now the 13 pints consumed on Tuesday, whilst out with my old mates on our regular 2nd Tuesday in the month gathering, started to kick in!! However we were soon over Wawne Common and through Kingswood to The Ship in Dunswell. Should I DRINK DRINK DRINK after the day before escapades? Well just half a Peroni.

Home for a bath WITH A LITTLE BIT OF SOAP listening to Good Time Oldies on TuneIn Radio 181.FM. A very enjoyable 61 miler in great company.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL - B.B. KING (22-01-20): John Ulyatt

YESTERDAY, I met Hull’s equivalent of THE BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB, The Gerries at Skidby Mill for a ride to THE FARM shop in Hutton Cranswick. THE MAGIC NUMBERS were 12 in The Autobus and 10 in The Peleton who went to The Waterwheel Cafe in Howden.

Our group leader was KENNY. The weather was THREE DEGREES up on yesterday and a wee bit cloudy and MISTY as we set off. I'VE GOT MY MOJO WORKING again after shaking off the dreaded lurgy - No more SHAKING ALL OVER.

We headed up the drag towards Little Weighton and took a (PAT) SHARP right to Risby. Onward through Walkington, Bishop Burton and into the delightful village of Cherry Burton. Another right turn in Etton and eventually down The Poggio and through Lockington and Kilnwick. The road through Cawkeld was very very MUDDY (WATERS) and our bikes will need a good wash when we get home! Our route then took us on the loop via BLUE Keld Mineral water factory to our destination.

I had a sausage sarnie with a mug of DICK AND DEE DEE. 8 sausages - brilliant!! Well worth the £6.25. Lovely cafe. On leaving Ken noted his front tyre was flat - Oh Joy!! Didn't take long to fix and a quick PUMP IT UP saw us on our way. It was now GOOD DAY SUNSHINE as the clouds disappeared.

We were soon on the Bracken track and the view of South Dalton Church was truly amazing. Like a (TALKING) JAPANESE painting with various (50) SHADES OF GREY culminating in a fog bank over the Humber. SENSATIONAL!!(ALEX HARVEY BAND). The ride back was glorious in the sunshine via Etton, Cherry B, Walkington to The Half Moon in Skidby.

2 pints of Theakston best bitter - LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL Eh! Great banter in the pub. The Peleton, looking shattered, arrived just as we were GOING HOME. Kitch, Steve and I left leaving Mike G chatting about a future Majorcan trip with the rest of the guys. Within a 100 yards, Kitch shouted puncture - Oh Joy again!! His back wheel on his PRIDE AND JOY was flat. We took it out of the frame and try as we may we SIMPLY (RED) could not get the tyre off the rim - such a TIGHTFIT. In the end, Kitch rang Jackie to pick him up.

Red hot bath at home listening to Blues compilation on Spotify. 57 Miles (Should have had some HEINZ baked beans with lunch!)

When clothes washed, I shall be hanging them up in my new Tamla Motown wardrobe. Bit small as only room for FOUR TOPS! Thanks for that one Dave.

SEA OF HEARTBREAK - DON GIBSON (29.1.2020): John Ulyatt

Today, our last bike ride in the EU, I rode to The Humber Bridge to meet the rest of THE ROCKIN BERRIES for a ride across the river. 12 in The Autobus and 5 in The Peleton.

THE TYMES I've ridden across there and still GET LOST, however our leader today was MOBY Dick and he took us on a fantastic WANDA (JACKSON) around the (CLEO) LAINEs which he knows like the back of his (I WANNA HOLD YOUR) HAND.

We left the car park about 10.10 riding directly into a HOWLIN WOLF wind. The vortex caused by the wind swishing around the PIERS (MORGAN) caused quite a few wobbles! Going down the other side of the bridge, the smell of the (CHICORY) TIP was dreadful. We turned left leaving the bridge heading for the (SEA OF) HEARTBREAK hill - always a hard start to a ride.

A CRAZY (HORSES) descent into THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH Ferriby and past (LOU) READs Island before reaching Winteringham. Dick took us to the Haven to view the yachts.

Social Scene Jan-Feb 2020 HULL THURSDAY Road Club

Onward meandering through Winterton/Roxby/Low Risby to the main road, Ermine St., at Appleby. Diabolical road surface and it was SHAKE RATTLE AND ROLL for a few miles. A couple of idiot lorry drivers passed us at SPEED and gave us about 18 inches of room - Scary!!

Thankfully a left turn into Broughton Woods took us off this Roman road and riding through Wressle we were soon in Brigg for lunch in the courtyard cafe at The ANGEL.

A sausage sarnie and a pot of PETERS AND LEE = £5.20 - Not a lot of MONEY HONEY.

Once again we lingered over lunch before Dick flashing his DIMPLES said "WE'VE GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS PLACE". We were soon on our way.

Normally we get stopped at the level crossing by THE LAST TRAIN TO CLARKSVILLE but we were LUCKY today. Our gears crunched as we climbed the infamous Elsham Hill and made our way to Bonby Lodge and crossed over the A15 to Barrow on Humber (home of John Harrison who invented the first Marine Chronometer in 1735).

We were soon swooping past the Wren Kitchens site into Barton and across the river to the (CATCH A FALLING) STAR Inn/Willerby arriving at 3pm. The remnants of The Pelton LITTLE RICHARD and THE THOMPSON TWINS who had been to an area of outstanding natural beauty - Immingham!!! arrived 5 minutes later.

A couple of Wainwrights together with the banter/Micky taking/jokes etc was a DREAM finish to a great day. Just the 55 miles today - Home for a bath listening to 60s/70s stuff on Spotify.

Sunday 2nd February Club Ride: Geoff Rawson

First Sunday of a new dawn for the UK. Depending on your views, I personally only felt some disappointment as the day started with rain, but as I’ve noted over the years my skin is waterproof!

Having done the usual pre ride checks on the Saturday and noted a frayed rear gear cable which was replaced on my bike, tyres checked and inflated, we got ready on Sunday morning. Angie’s bike now had a flat tyre as it left the garage. 10 feet into our day and a puncture - how had that happened? Now agitated as we were likely to be late to Skidby, we blamed it on each other. Geoff you cannot have checked it properly! Me - No you deliberately wheeled your bike over a thorn. Her - What?? In the garage! You should keep your garage floor clean and swept then. (I lost that one.)

A quick text to inform the others to wait for us, and an even quicker inner tube replacement, we set off in light drizzle. And still only 7 minutes late. Six riders out this weekend with us. The rain was fine, a bit chilly, but with waterproofs on it was no problem. Grahame Lawton had a lovely light blue Rapha jacket on and was happy to ride on the front all morning as it helped keep his jacket mud spatter free. Social Scene Jan-Feb 2020 HULL THURSDAY Road Club

We did a reverse route this week Bracken track, Hutton Cranswick where Tim peeled off as he was visiting friends in Cranswick. Later a slight detour on our route as the road to Lowthorpe was filthy and muddy ahead, we made our way to Nafferton, Kilham and then a steady climb over the hills to Langtoft. Angie was dropped on the climb but a slight ease in speed from us all and she was back on. These rides are about sticking together (plus she had the door keys) no trying to drop each other. That’s for racing days.

Saying that as we cycled along the road towards Weaverthorpe we spotted a small group ahead and an out of the saddle effort led by Angie and we caught and passed them thus reaching the Rarey Halt café first.

Lunch as usual was excellent and we were all damp but not soaked after 45 miles for us so far. The food came slowly but was worth the wait, we after all are not in a food race and the café was packed out with lots of cyclist and others as well.

A text or two sent out saying we were going back home and we were off. Chilly now on drying roads, we set off in waterproofs towards Kirby Grindalythe before a left turn over towards Sledmere. Where, following the climb, Richard Guymer stopped to remove his waterproof and Angie took advantage to start on the climb out of Sledmere to get a head start

We chased after her but hadn’t closed the gap when Mark Symmonds and Steve Guymer came across us as they had ridden out to meet us near the Taton Sykes monument. Thus giving the impression we had all be dropped on the climb and by a woman (honestly as if !!!) and we were breathless from the chase and unable to correct them and when we did it just looked like male pride.

Down towards Garton on the Wolds and on towards Eastburn and Southburn we came across Dave Millson riding the other way. Tiring legs now but not too far and so the usual route back to Little Weighton. We said a great ride again, thanks everyone, are you out next weekend? Angie and I made a steady warm down ride back home, 82 miles.

Was it worth the setting off in the rain? Yes it was and now I’m off to clean two mucky muddy bikes and double check for any sneaky thorns lurking in the tyres and, oh and sweep the garage floor as suggested.
