Buttonhole row (RS) K 2, yo, k2tog, k to end.

Next row (WS) Knit. Rep from * 2 more times (total 4 buttonholes). AT SAME TIME, work Pocket Welt and Neck Shaping in same manner as Right Front.

GAUGE:

12 sts = 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row) on larger needles. When you match the in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

SWEATER BACK With smaller needles, cast on 30 (32, 34) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 rows, ending with a WS row. Next Row (RS) Change to larger needles and begin working in Garter st. Work even until piece measures 9½ (10, 10½) inches from start. Bind off all sts.

Pocket linings (make 2) With larger needles, cast on 8 sts, work in Garter st for 2 inches, slip stitches to holder.

RIGHT FRONT With smaller needles, cast on 16 (17, 18) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 rows, ending with a WS row. Next Row (RS) Change to larger needles and begin working in Garter st until piece measures 3 inches.

Work Pocket Welt Next Row K 4 (4, 5) sts, (k 1, p 1) 4 times, k 4 (5, 5) sts; rep previous row 3 times more. Next row K 4 (5, 5) sts, bind off 8 sts, k 4 (4, 5) sts. Next row K 4 (4, 5) sts, slip 8 sts of pocket from holder to left needle and k 4 (5, 5) sts. Continue working even until front measures 8 (8¼, 8½) inches from beg. Neck Shaping: Bind off 3 sts at neck edge once, then 1 st at neck edge every other row 3 times. Work rem 10 (11, 12) sts even until piece measures 9½ (10, 10½) inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

LEFT FRONT With smaller needles, cast on 16 (17, 18) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 4 rows.

Buttonhole Next Row (RS) Work in rib to last 4 sts, yo, k2tog, work last 2 sts in rib. Next Row (WS) Work in rib. Next Row (RS) Change to larger needles and begin Garter st. Continue making buttonholes as follows: *Work 10 (10, 12) rows of Garter st ending with a WS row. Buttonhole Row (RS) K to last 4 sts, yo, k2tog, k to end. Next row (WS) Knit. Rep from * 2 more times (total 4 buttonholes). AT SAME TIME, work Pocket Welt and Neck Shaping in same manner as Right Front.

SLEEVES With smaller needles, cast on 18 (20, 22) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 6 rows, ending with a WS row. Next Row (RS) Change to larger needles and begin working in Garter st. Inc 1 st each edge every 8th row 3 (4, 5) times – 24 (28, 32) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 8½ (8¾, 9) inches from beg. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING Sew shoulder seams. Pick up 37 (41, 45) sts around neck and work in k1, p1 rib, ending with k1 for 1 row. Work 5thbuttonhole as follows: Rib 2 sts, yo, k2tog, rib to end. Rib 1 more row. Bind off in rib. Sew sleeves to body, sew underarm and side seams. Whip stitch pocket linings into place. Sew on buttons.
