Aroian, published posthumously Scope and Content of Collection The collection contains material collected by Richard P. Mitchell, a professor and scholar of the history of the modern Middle East and North Africa, during the course of his personal and professional research. A large portion of the collection pertains to the history and the early years of the Muslim Brotherhood, a religious, political, and social organization founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hasan al-Banna. Despite having undergone serious government suppression in 1948, 1954, and 1965, the Muslim Brotherhood remains a large international political organization. The Society of the Muslim Brothers Research File contains material gathered by Mitchell in Egypt from 1951 to 1956 while conducting research for his dissertation, later published as The Society of the Muslim Brothers by Oxford University Press in 1969. It includes rare publications from members of the Muslim Brotherhood, both official and unofficial, that date from 1934 to 1963. Also included are editions of the organization's weekly newspaper, Al-Da'wa; other limited circulation newspapers, including bound volumes of local press; pamphlets mourning the assassination of Hasan al-Banna; and other printed matter regarding the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, the series contains copies of the journal Al- Muslimūn, which was published by Sa'id Ramadan, a prominent member of the Brotherhood. The items in this series are organized according to an alphanumeric system used and created by Mitchell. An inventory listing the titles of these items is located at the beginning of the series. Register of the Richard Paul 77076 2 Mitchell collection The remainder of the collection contains clippings, booklets, books, and other printed matter, mainly from the late 1970s and early 1980s, collected in the course of Mitchell's work as a professor of history at the University of Michigan and his research leading up to the publication of The Modern Middle East and North Africa. The Geographic File, Subject File, and Arabic File contain Mitchell's newspaper clippings files that he organized by either subject or geographic location. They include clippings from English, French, and Arabic publications and cover topics such as US foreign policy, the Middle East, North Africa, and various other global issues from the late 1970s. These files have been arranged for the most part according to a printed inventory created by Mitchell, located in the Richard P. Mitchell File. The collection also includes some of Mitchell's personal writings and correspondence (Richard P. Mitchell File), writings from colleagues and other scholars in the field of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies (Speeches and Writings by Others), newsletters and publications from groups concerned with Middle Eastern and Islamic issues (Organizations File), copies of Arabic publications (Printed Matter and Oversize Material), as well as official US Department of State publications relating to the Middle East and other topics found in the clippings files (Printed Matter). Although he was an atheist, or perhaps a deist—I never knew precisely—he nonetheless remained committed to the traditions of Judaism. He cel- ebrated all the major holidays—Passover, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—despite allowing generous portions of liturgical prayers to be skipped. He didn’t object, except to taunt me playfully, when during my teenage identity crisis I decided to take evening courses at a synagogue to study the sacred texts like the Talmud as the precursor to a rabbinical career. Then I lost my faith. Nor did he object to my decision to join Hashomer Hatzair (literally, “The Young Guard”), the Zionist youth movement with Marxist influences. I suspect that like me, my father was ignorant of nearly everything about Zionism and Marxism, two ideologies completely absent from his intellectual universe. I left the movement a year later, disap- pointed by its attempt to reconcile Jewish nationalism with international Marxism. Every five years, my father would save up enough money for us to take vacations in Lebanon where to our delight, the abundance of water, the exuberance of its flora, and the bounty of its orchards contrasted with arid and dry Egypt.

    AL GHANNAM, ABDULAZIZ G., Ph.D., December 2019 TRANSLATION STUDIES IDEOLOGY IN MEDIA TRANSLATION: A CASE STUDY OF MEMRI’S TRANSLATIONS (294 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Brian James Baer Translation is an invaluable tool for communicating between cultures and for bridging the “knowledge gap.” Based on this fact, the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) claims that the purpose of its translations of media content from the Middle East, mainly the Arabic-speaking world, is to bridge the knowledge gap that exists between the West and Middle Eastern countries. Although MEMRI’s stated goal is a generous and worthy one, its translations have attracted criticism from major translation scholars such as Mona Baker (2005, 2006, 2010a) and journalists such as Brian Whitaker (2002, 2007), as well as scholars from history and political studies. The main criticism regarding MEMRI’s translations revolves around the question of selectivity, or which texts are chosen for translation. However, no study to date has provided comprehensive evidence to support or refute that charge, which this study aims to do. This study focuses on English translations of texts and video clips that were found in the Saudi Arabia translation archive, published and available online on MEMRI’s website. By investigating all the Saudi media sources (e.g., newspapers, TV channels, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) from which MEMRI makes its selection of texts for translation, this study provides statistical evidence as to whether MEMRI’s translations are representative of what is being circulated in the source culture (Saudi Arabia) media. Supporting evidence is sought in MEMRI’s approach to the translation of titles and in its translation of video clips (subtitling).

Over the last decade, Arab Americans have become one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States. But the story of the media trying to serve that audience is more complicated than that: The Arab-American population across the United States is ethnically diverse. Arab-American media are being buffeted by the same technology and economic trends as the news media generally, as well as a more challenging advertising market. And, advancements in technology have brought new competition from Arab outlets located in the Middle East and North Africa. Overall, the current Arab-American news media are relatively young. Newspapers and news websites are currently the most prominent sector, with much of the coverage focused on community news and events. There is also coverage at the national level, though, and recently, the Arab uprisings have given rise to more international coverage of news from “back home.” A number of papers are seeing rising circulation. Some new publications have even launched. However, most papers are still struggling to recover financially from the economic recession of 2007 and at the same time keep up with the trends in digital technology and social media.

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.
