MAJOR RESEARCH INTERESTS: My primary research interest focuses on the reduction or elimination of health disparities through community-engaged research, including gaining a better understanding of the individual, intrapersonal, community, organizational, and policy/environmental factors associated with disease or disease risk and the design and implementation of interventions to address these factors. Specific focus on behavioral interventions promoting healthy eating and active living, disease knowledge and control, and personal empowerment characterizes my work. Ongoing funded research centers on the prevention and control of cancer, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

The objective of this study is to establish the feasibility of conducting a randomized clinical trial among low-income pregnant women in order to test the hypothesis that reducing late-night intake of high glycemic index foods and beverages will improve glucose tolerance in pregnancy and reduce early life risk factors for obesity in the offspring. Role: Co-Investigator U54MD008176 (Fouad) (Baskin, PI: Research Project 1) 09/26/12–07/31/18 NIH/NIMHD $788,220 (Rsch Proj) Title: Mid-South Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center for Health Disparities Research This project seeks to reduce the disparities in chronic disease burden experienced by African Americans in six Mid-South states. Our goal is to address the social determinants that interplay to impact a person’s health and produce disparate health outcomes of minority populations. We will focus on pathways to obesity and chronic illness and the mechanisms connecting these pathways to health disparities throughout the life-course. Research Project 1, Determinants of Gestational Weight Gain in Overweight Women in the Deep South, seeks to examine the relative contribution of social determinants of health (e.g., social, cultural, and built environments) and interpersonal characteristics (e.g., age, race) on maternal gestational weight gain and short-term health outcomes of 200 black and 200 white mother-infant pairs in Birmingham, Alabama, and Jackson, Mississippi. Findings from this study may decrease risk for cancer recurrence and cancer- related mortality, improve quality of life, and perhaps ultimately increase survival rates for this vulnerable population. Role: Principal Investigator
