The data upon which the analysis rests was collected through participant observation as well as qualitative interviews and surveys. The first chapter consists of a brief overview of traditional foodways in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as a summary of the current state of the tourism industry. As well, the methodology which underpins the study is presented. Chapter two examines the historical origins of culinary tourism and the development of the idea in the Canadian context. The chapter ends with a description of Newfoundland and Labrador's current culinary marketing campaign, "A Taste of Newfoundland and Labrador." With particular attention to folklore scholarship, the course of academic attention to foodways and tourism, both separately and in tandem, is documented in chapter three. The second part of the thesis consists of three case studies. Chapter four examines the uses of seal flipper pie in hegemonic discourse about the province and its culture. Fried foods, specifically fried fish, potatoes and cod tongues, provide the starting point for a discussion of changing attitudes toward food, health and the obligations of citizenry in chapter five. -

STRIPED BASS (MORONE SAXATILIS) POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS AND SPAWNING ASSESSMENT IN THE BOUCTOUCHE AND COCAGNE RIVERS PREPARED BY: CHARLES COMEAU, NATHALIE LEBLANC-POIRIER, MICHELLE MAILLET, DONALD ALEXANDER PRESENTED TO: THE SOUTHEASTERN ANGLERS ASSOCIATION WILDLIFE TRUST FUND FISHERIES AND OCEANS CANADA JULY 2013 1. INTRODUCTION Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) is a native anadromous fish species of the North American Atlantic coastline that spawns in fresh or brackish water. In the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of St Lawrence watersheds, spawning occurs in May and June. Juvenile Striped bass then migrate downstream to brackish waters and eventually salt water to feed and grow until they have reached maturity, a process that normally takes three to four years. Striped bass was considered a commercially important fish before it was designated as a threatened species by COSEWIC (the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) in November 2004. However, because there was such a decline in the population, Striped bass met the criteria for being listed as an ‘‘endangered’’ species. The Striped bass population of the Gulf of St Lawrence was ultimately designated as ‘‘threatened’’ because of the high degree of resilience of this species and the high abundance of spawners found prior to the designation. It is therefore important to gather more information on the current Striped bass population in rivers and estuaries draining into the Gulf of St Lawrence. According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) of Canada, there is no evidence that Striped bass spawn successfully in any other rivers in New Brunswick other than the Northwest Miramichi river (DFO, 2011). -

Challenges • The regional labour market is aging. • Outmigration • In the future, more will have to come from other countries. • We need to start looking at immigration as more than just ‘filling a gap in the labour market’. Developing the Immigration Strategy: The Process • Prepared a background document on the role of immigration as a driver of Greater Moncton’s growth • Reviewed immigration strategies in other communities across Canada • Hosted the Greater Moncton Immigration Summit (May 2013) to get input from the more than 200 attendees • Consulted directly with nearly two dozen key stakeholders including 10 private sector firms. • Peer reviewed by Michael Hann and Chedly Belkhodja Objectives of the Immigration Strategy • Develop and clearly communicate the need for immigration in the years ahead. • Recommend ways to foster the institutional changes needed to make us a welcoming community. • Engage the business community in the attraction and integration of immigrants into the workforce Objectives of the Immigration Strategy (cont.) • Encourage governments to view immigration into mid-sized urban centres such as Greater Moncton in a different way. -

January 31, 2007 Petitcodiac Riverkeeper Petitcodiac causeway continues to top "pollution" list Nothing has changed in eight years according to Riverkeeper Causeways, sewage discharges, urban sprawl, abandoned dams and pesticides continued to harm the Petitcodiac River ecosystem in 2006, just like they did in 2005 or 1999 according to a report unveiled today by the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper. The fifth annual exercise conducted by the Riverkeeper to identify the issues that have the greatest negative impact on the Petitcodiac River ecosystem, its "10 Worst Pollution Sources" list, is meant to educate the public on the most urgent environmental issues facing the watershed and also to encourage the parties responsible for the negative impacts to take corrective action. The term 'pollution source' employed by Petitcodiac Riverkeeper in its report refers to an activity by individuals, corporations or public agencies that has caused or continues to cause a single or multiple negative impact on the water quality, the habitat and the ecological integrity of the Petitcodiac River system (the 3,000 km2 Watershed and its tributaries that comprise the Petitcodiac River, Memramcook River and Shepody River ecosystems). "Over 90 percent of the damage to the Petitcodiac River system is still being caused by governments", says President Michel Desjardins. Public agencies such as the Province of New Brunswick and the Greater Moncton Sewerage Commission were again signalled out in the report for continuing to lead the pack of the region's "worst polluters" in 2006.
