In 1998 EEA published Guidelines for the implementation of the EUROWATERNET monitoring network for inland waters. In every Member Country a monitoring network should be designed according to these Guidelines and put into operation. Together these national networks will form the EUROWATERNET monitoring network that will provide information on the quantity and quality of European inland waters. In the future they will be developed to meet the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. This publication presents the Finnish EUROWATERNET monitoring network put into operation from the first of January, 2000. It includes a total of 195 river sites, 253 lake sites and 74 hydrological baseline sites. Groundwater monitoring network will be developed later. In addition, information about Finnish water resources and current monitoring strategies is given. The numerous episodes of Paleoproterozoie volcanism and assoeiated sedimen­ tation preserved in the Kiihtelysvaara - Tohmajärvi distriet represent both prolonged and episodie rifting of eratonie erust. V-Pb zireon age determinations from two mafie dykes intruded in eonjunetion with the basalmost lava flows indieate an age of ca. 2120 - 2100 Ma for this earliest mafie magmatism. However, no informa­ tion is yet available eoneerning the age of the younger flows, dykes or sills. Pyroclastie units are also present and have, along with the mafie lava flows and intrusions, been metamorphosed under greenschist facies eonditions. Volcan­ ism took plaee in an intraeratonie, within-plate setting, with predominantly basal­ tie eompositions. Hydrothermal alteration oeeurred both during and after erup­ tion. This affeeted the chemical composition of the earlier lava in particular, the younger lava flows as weil as the dykes and sills generally showing less evidence of ehemical alteration. The volcanogenic and sedimentary formations of the Kiihtelysvaara area have been renamed according to local geographical place names and regional correla­ tions and comparisons have been made between the study area and similar sequences elsewhere in Finland, particularly with respect to the mafie units.

The study area represents a well-preserved, though tectonically modified and metamorphosed Paleoproterozoic sedimentary sequence overlying a Neoarchean basement comprising granitoids and greenstone belts, some of which appear to be relatively enriched in uranium and thorium. Accordingly, the area may be evaluated in terms of diagenetic to metamorphic mobilization of uranium, as well as primary depositional enrichment. It is necessary to establish whether the lowest formations in the stratigraphical sequence were deposited before or after redox shift in atmosphere and regolith. Further scenarios may be considered, such as extrapolation of Riphean basins across the study area, with potential for mineralization if the present erosion level is close to that in the Mesoproterozoic. However, current isotopic and paleomagnetic data favour late Svecofennian rather than younger hydrothermal activity.     MINERALOGICAL EVIDENCE FOR AN OPHIOLITE FROM THE OUTOKUMPU SERPENTINITES IN NORTH KARELIA, FINLAND JOUNI VUOLLO and TAUNO PIIRAINEN VUOLLO, JOUNI and PIIRAINEN, TAUNO, 1989: Mineralogical evidence for an ophiolite from the Outokumpu serpetinites in North Karelia, Finland. Bull. Geol. Soc. Finland 61, Part 1, 95—112. The serpentinites of the Outokumpu complex located in the early Proterozoic schist belt of North Karelia in Eastern Finland are investigated petrographically, mineralogically and chemically, with an emphasis on relict minerals, especially chrome spinel, and also olivine and orthopyroxene. The relict minerals and tex- tures provide evidence for an ophiolite of the Alpine type in the complex, and for the opinion that the serpentinites have originated from residual mantle perido- tites and overlying olivine cumulates. The mantle peridotites, being serpentinized to chrysotile rocks, contain relicts of olivine (Fo9|_93), orthopyroxene (100*Mg/ (Mg + Fe) = 92—94) and anhedral, euhedral or interstitial Cr-rich chrome spinel (Cr/(Cr +Al) 0.75—0.98 and Mg/(Mg + Fe-*) 0.1—0.4), while the cumulates have been serpentinized completely to antigorite rocks, being characterized by euhedral Al-rich chrome spinel (Cr/(Cr + AI) 0.65 and Mg/(Mg +Fe2 + ) 0.6).     ON THE KARELIDES IN THE TOHMAJÄRVI AREA, EASTERN FINLAND OSMO NYKÄNEN NYKÄNEN, OSMO 1971: On the Karelides in the Tohmajärvi area, eastern Finland. Bull. Geo/. Soc. Finland 43, 93—108. The evolution of the Karelides in the Tohmajärvi area is discussed. The Karelidic schists (metasediments) are devided into two stratigraphic groups, the Jatulian and the Kalevian, which likewise represent two different sedimentation facies. The Jatulian metasediments are so-called evolutionary sediments, deposited under relatively peaceful conditions in marginal parts of the continental block, partly in a shallow transgressive sea. These continental- epicontinental sediments were originally weathering gravel, quartz sands, bituminous and calcareous sediments, which were metamorphosed into metaconglomerates, quartzites, black schists and dolomites. The Kalevian metasediments are revolutionary sediments, chemically weakly weathered and mixed with sand and clay, which deposited rather rapidly into fold basins formed during orogenic movements. They are so-called flysch (Wegmann 1928, 1929) sediments and form the phyllite — mica schist group. Besides the normal metasediments, the Jatulian group comprises pyroclastic sediments and hypabyssic and metabasaltic effusives which erupted during the initial stages of the Svecofenno-Karelidic orogeny. In the southern part of the schist area there are smaller Late-Karelidic granite intrusions which together with the orogenic movements caused regional metamorphism under conditions of amphibolite facies where staurolite
