Falklands Conservation Annual Review July 2016–June 2017 ACHIEVEMENTS and PERFORMANCE Falklands Conservation Annual Review July 2016–June 2017 Falklands Conservation is a full Partner of BirdLife International, making a significant contribution to the BirdLife Global Marine Programme and working closely with the UK Partner, the RSPB. The work we do reflects our mission to work in partnership with the local and international Falkland Islands community to conserve nature. When purchase was being considered, Sally Poncet visited Middle Island and reported that it would have particular significance as a reserve. It was about three miles south of Mare Harbour, bordering the principal navigation channel for shipping resupplying Mount Pleasant through East Cove. Possible future activities associated with oil exploration could increase shipping in the area. Sally was surprised to find good stands of a grass thought to be Mountain Blue Grass Poa alopecurus , over one metre tall and thriving on pure sand. She commented on the lack of information on this grass in the Falklands and stated that identification of the Middle Island plants was required. If it was confirmed as P. alopecurus , its habitat on Middle Island suggested that it could have potential as a coloniser and stabiliser of eroded ground.

    UK Military’s Overseas Base Network Involves 145 Sites in 42 Countries. Encircling China? Global Military Presence By Phil Miller Region: Europe Global Research, November 26, 2020 Theme: Militarization and WMD Declassified UK 24 November 2020 Britain’s military has a permanent presence at 145 base sites in 42 countries or territories around the world, research by Declassified UK has found. The size of this global military presence is far larger than previously thought and is likely to mean that the UK has the second largest military network in the world, after the United States. It is the first time the true size of this network has been revealed. The UK uses 17 separate military installations in Cyprus as well as 15 in Saudi Arabia and 16 in Oman – the latter both dictatorships with whom the UK has especially close military relations. The UK’s base sites include 60 it manages itself in addition to 85 facilities run by its allies where the UK has a significant presence. These appear to fit the description of whatGeneral Mark Carleton-Smith, Britain’s Chief of the General Staff, recently termed as “lily pads” – sites which the UK has easy access to as and when required. Declassified has not included in the figures the UK’s small troop contributions to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan or the Cyprus buffer zone, nor staffing commitments at NATO administrative sites in Europe or most of its special forces deployments, which are largely unknown. The findings come days afterPrime Minister Boris Johnson announced an extra £16-billion would be spent on the UK military over the next four years – a 10% increase.

The Falkland Islands Government is currently developing a new Strategy for managing invasive plants. The Strategy will identify and designate responsibility for invasive plant issues across government departments, the private sector and NGOs, along with funding to support action. The aim of this research was to provide the evidence to underpin the development of a draft Strategy and to provide the evidence to help Falklands Island Government and other stakeholders: a. Understand the current nature and extent of established invasive species; and b. Prioritise and strengthen intervention. Nature and extent of established species Extensive surveys of the Falkland Islands were undertaken to update maps of non-native species distribution. Areas surveyed included Saunders Island, Keppel Island, South Harbour, Purvis House, River Island, Weddell Island, Kelp Creek, Loop Head, Pebble Island, Marble Mountain and Mt Rosalie. Updated maps of the Falklands Flora were produced using data from these surveys and were published separately in an earlier phase of the project: www.falklandsconservation.com/wildlife/plants (Upson & Lewis 2013). Herbarium specimens and associated DNA samples were taken from all new species encountered; species not already represented adequately in herbaria.

Report finalised 2 June 2017 2 Executive Summary The island group of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. The Territory is administered by a small team based in Stanley in the Falkland Islands as well as a number of officers based at King Edward Point on South Georgia. Activities undertaken in the Territory include scientific research, tourism and commercial fishing. All activities are ship-based, which is the only means of accessing the islands. Vessels operating in the SGSSI maritime zone include fishing vessels (long-liners and trawlers), fishing support vessels (reefers and tankers), passenger vessels, research vessels, a fishery patrol vessel, British naval vessels, and yachts. SGSSI is a haven for the largest and most diverse populations of seabirds and marine mammals on Earth, and the most speciose marine ecosystem in the whole Southern Ocean. Combined with its wilderness, heritage and economic (tourism and fisheries) values, the Territory holds tremendous worth in a global context. Existing pressures on the environment and wildlife include a rapidly changing climate which is predicted to have significant implications for some species, including for krill on which many SGSSI top predators depend.
