The Geology of the Falkland Islands THE GEOLOGY OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS D T Aldiss and E J Edwards 1999 SUMMARY This report is complementary to the 1:250 000 scale geological map of the Falkland Islands compiled in 1998. The report and map are products of the Falkland Islands Geological Mapping Project (1996-1998). Geological observation and research in the Islands date from 1764. The Islands were visited during two pioneering scientific cruises in the 19th century. Subsequently, many scientists visited en route to the Antarctic or Patagonia. Geological affinities to other parts of the southern continents, especially South Africa, were noted early in the 20th century. There have been two previous attempts to create a geological map of the Islands, both motivated primarily by the search for economic mineral deposits onshore. In the last few decades much effort has been directed to understanding the Falklands’ place in Gondwana, the processes by which the Islands have moved to their present position by continental drift and the concomitant development of offshore sedimentary basins. Considerable progress in describing the superficial deposits was made in the 1970’s, and during the last ten years. The stratigraphic subdivisions of the geological sequence shown on the previous geological maps have been substantiated and defined more rigorously than before. In addition, several new stratigraphic units have been recognised. Each unit is described with an introductory summary of composition and distribution, followed by comments on nomenclature and stratigraphic relationships, associated landforms, distinguishing characters, and the criteria used to locate and survey the stratigraphic base. Detailed descriptions of composition, sedimentary structures and fossil content then lead to brief comments on the environment of deposition, age and correlation. The bedrock geological formations (‘solid geology’) can be divided into four age groups. The Proterozoic granites and amphibolite facies gneisses of the Cape Meredith Complex (about 1150 to 1000 million years old) are overlain in turn by sedimentary sequences of the ?Silurian to Devonian West Falkland Group and the Carboniferous to Permian Lafonia Group. Jurassic igneous rocks are widespread but only locally abundant. The West Falkland Group is dominated by sandstones, with some siltstones and mudstones. The oldest of four formations, the Port Stephens Formation, is divided into seven members, representing marine to fluvial environments. The basal member on East Falkland is probably the oldest part of the sedimentary sequence and might be latest Ordovician in age, but is more probably Silurian. The overlying Albemarle Member is notable for abundant trace fossils, mainly Skolithos, but also contains a new ichnospecies of Heimdallia. The succeeding marine Fox Bay Formation contains the Early to Middle Devonian Malvinokaffric invertebrate fossil fauna. One proximal facies member is recognised in the west. The Port Philomel Formation represents deltaic facies. It is notable for abundant fossil plant debris, most conspicuously lycophyte stems. The Late Devonian Port Stanley Formation, which includes the Stanley Quartzite, marks a return to marine conditions. The sandstones in the West Falkland Group are mostly quartz arenites and subarkoses, consistent with derivation from an area of stable continent crust. The West Falkland Group can be correlated with parts of the Cape Supergroup of South Africa. The Lafonian Group is lithologically more varied and is divided into five formations. The fine-grained marine sediments of the Late Carboniferous Bluff Cove Formation are confined to East Falkland. They are followed by the thick tillites and thin mudstones of the Permo-Carboniferous Fitzroy Tillite Formation. One distinctive bedded interval is defined as a member. The Port Sussex Formation, with three members, includes carbonaceous mudstones with up to 40 per cent total organic carbon. The Brenton Loch Formation is also divided into three members. It is composed of sandstones with siltstones and mudstones, which represent combinations of basinal and turbiditic deposition in a large lake. The basinal sediments include varvites and some striking examples of the trace fossils Umfolozia and Undichnia. The Bay of Harbours Formation is generally similar lithologically, but was deposited in deltaic environments. It includes a sandy proximal facies member and has common plant fossils, including Glossopteris. Most of the sandstones in the Lafonia Group contain detritus derived from a distant contemporary volcanic terrane and there are also sporadic thin tuffs. The lowest part of the Lafonia Group can be correlated with i The Geology of the Falkland Islands the Dwyka Group of South Africa, and the remainder with the parts of the Ecca Group and the lowermost Beaufort Group. Better understanding of the distribution and structure of the sedimentary sequences has allowed their thickness to be estimated more reliably. In general, each stratigraphic unit is thinner on West Falkland than on East Falkland. It is likely that West Falkland lay near one margin of the Permo-Carboniferous depositional basin, and that no part of the Lafonia Group was ever deposited in the southernmost part of West Falkland. Mid-Carboniferous sedimentary dykes occur locally in the south-west of West Falkland. Jurassic igneous dykes are widespread, especially in West Falkland. They are mostly composed of various types of dolerite, but more evolved rocks, including felsite, also occur. Those to the west of Falkland Sound can be divided by their field characteristics into six dyke swarms. Most of the dykes date from the Early Jurassic (about 190 million years ago) but Middle or Late Jurassic dykes could also occur. The latter are likely to be of similar age to Jurassic rhyolitic volcanic rocks which are inferred to occur offshore, close to the Islands. These could be accompanied by basalts, which might be the source of the agates known as ‘Falklands pebbles’. An east-west to NW-SE trending fold and thrust belt in the northern part of the Islands formed during the Permo- Triassic Gondwanide regional deformation. That was followed by at least four episodes of more localised deformation. A series of large-amplitude drape folds trending between north-south and ENE-WSW formed during the second phase as a result of passive deformation of the sedimentary cover over deep-seated faults. Each fold pair represents up-to-the-west fault movements in the underlying basement. During the third deformation, dextral strike- slip faulting with minor folding occurred in Falkland Sound and the adjacent parts of both main islands. About five to ten kilometres of dextral displacement occurred on the Falkland Sound Fault Zone. The fourth phase of deformation is represented onshore by a thrust sheet in the far north of the Islands. This thrusting is possibly younger than the Early Jurassic dolerite dykes. During the final phase of deformation the eastern part of East Falkland was uplifted by about three kilometres relative to the rest of the Islands. This uplift caused the formation of the Goose Green

After their moult, 34 penguins were followed for a mean transmission period of 81 ± 21 d. While there were substantial spatial and temporal variations in migration pat- terns, we identified several foraging areas where food availability is presumably higher than else- where. Coastal areas of the Falkland Islands and South America appeared to provide a sufficient food supply, and many penguins commuted between these 2 areas, which are about 600 km apart. Rock- hopper penguins from northern breeding colonies also used areas along the slope of the Patagonian Shelf up to 39°S, about 1400 km northwards. By contrast, only a few birds from the southern breed- ing colony migrated to the Burdwood Bank, which is situated about 250 km to the south of the Falk- land Islands, and adjacent oceanic waters. None of the penguins in this study left the maritime zone of the Falkland Islands in an easterly direction to forage in oceanic waters. The mean distances covered per day by individual birds varied greatly, depending on the phase of the foraging trip.

Orthopyroxene-bearing NW-SE oriented quartz-tholeiite dykes 10 underwent fractional crystallization > 1 GPa, and major element constraints suggest that they 11 were derived by melting of pyroxenite-rich source. They have εNd182 in the range -6 to -11 and 87 86 12 Sr/ Sr182 >0.710 and therefore require an old lithospheric component in their source. A suite 13 of basaltic-andesites and andesites exhibit geochemical compositions transitional between Ferrar 14 and Karoo magma types, and are similar to those seen in the KwaZulu-Natal region of southern 15 Africa and the Theron Mountains of Antarctica. Olivine-phyric intrusions equilibrated at < 0.5 87 86 16 GPa, and have isotopic compositions (εNd182 1.6-3.6 and Sr/ Sr182 0.7036-0.7058) that require 17 limited interaction with old continental lithosphere. A suite of plagioclase-phyric intrusions with 87 86 18 Sr/ Sr182 c. 0.7035 and εNd182 c. +4, and low Th/Ta and La/Ta ratios (c. 1 and c. 15 19 respectively) also largely escaped interaction with the lithosphere. These isotopically depleted 20 intrusions were probably emplaced synchronously with Gondwana fragmentation and the 21 formation of new oceanic lithosphere.

    The Sea Lion Islands: A Chronological History D. Bailey, Historian in Residence, 2019 Sea Lion Island is the most Southerly occupied Island in the Falklands archipelago and is the largest of the ‘Sea Lion Islands’ group. They first appear named on a map of ‘Hawkins Maidenland’ in 1689 and have been known as the Sea Lion Islands since. Not a great deal is known about Sea Lion Island’s history between its discovery and the mid- nineteenth century but it is safe to assume that the bountiful stocks of seals and sea lions were brutally exploited by the many (predominantly American) sealers visiting the Falklands to take advantage of their lack of protection. In terms of ownership, the islands are first mentioned included in a grant issued to Alexander Ross and Samuel Lafone (who lent his name to Lafonia) in 1846. In their early prospectus (1849) they mention the islands’ use for the profitable sealing industry that had been steadily wiping out the populations on the islands for the best part of a hundred years. The Sea Lion Islands are referred to as being “favourite resorts of these valuable animals” but it was later noted that “…Hitherto, these valuable rookeries have been so much poached by French and American adventurers and fished in so indiscriminate a manner, that on some of the best grounds the animals are becoming shy and scarce;…” As with many of the Falkland Islands, Sea Lion Island does have a rich maritime history often linked either to the perilous waters around Cape Horn or to the shallow reefs off the island itself.

They reside mainly on the outer islands of the archipelago in strong associated with seabird populations, and where human interference is relatively low. A survey of the breeding population conducted in the austral summers of 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 indicates that the current population is likely to be the highest it has been for perhaps the last 100 years.

    Freshwater fish in the Falklands Conservation of native zebra trout Echo Goodwin, North Arm School A report by Katherine Ross to the Falkland Islands Government and Falklands Conservation, 2009. Summary • Only two species of freshwater fish, Zebra trout (Aplochiton zebra) and Falklands minnows (Galaxias maculatus) are native to the Falklands. • Brown trout (Salmo trutta) were introduced to the Falklands in the 1940’s and 1950’s. They can spend part of their life cycle at sea which has allowed them to spread across the islands causing a catastrophic decline in the distribution of zebra trout. The ways by which brown trout remove zebra trout probably include predation on juvenile fish and competition for food. • Zebra trout are long lived and therefore adult populations may persist for many years where juveniles no longer survive. Such populations can become extinct suddenly. • Freshwater fish of the Falklands were last surveyed in 1999. • This project investigated the distribution of freshwater fish in West and East Falkland by electrofishing, netting and visual surveys and identified conservation priorities for zebra trout. • Zebra trout populations were found in Lafonia, the south of West Falkland and Port Howard. Brown trout were found across much of Lafonia where their range appears to have expanded since 1999. • Once brown trout have invaded a catchment they are very difficult to remove. Controlling the spread of brown trout is therefore an urgent priority if zebra trout are to be conserved. • Freshwater habitats where zebra trout were found were generally in good condition but in some areas perched culverts may prevent juvenile zebra trout from returning to freshwaters (we think larval zebra trout spend their first few months at sea).

Summary A survey of key breeding sites of Southern Giant Petrels (Macronectes giganteus ) within the Falkland Islands was undertaken in 2015/16. The minimum breeding population of the Islands was estimated to be 20,970 ± 180 pairs, an increase of 7.4 % since the previous census in 2004/05. Sixteen breeding sites were confirmed, supporting a minimum of 21 colonies/ breeding areas; however, this figure does not account for likely additional small groups or single pairs breeding around the coasts, which were not surveyed. Based on the previous census, these small groups (constituting less than 0.5 % of the total estimated figure in 2004/05) are unlikely to significantly influence the overall population estimate. The current Falkland estimate would increase the global population estimate by 1441 breeding pairs to 48,239 breeding pairs; of which the Falklands would comprise approximately 43 %.

    Our Islands, Our History WHAT Are the FAlklAnd IslAnds? Who are Falkland Islanders and what does it mean to be a citizen of our country? These are questions which Islanders are asked frequently but to which there are no quick answers. Our history goes some way towards explaining what it is to be a Falkland Islander. It is a fairly short history. Settlement is relatively recent: it began in the eighteen century and has only been continuous from the early nineteenth century. Unlike the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires, we never had an indigenous population, so we have no ancient monuments or romantic mythologies to define our identity as Islanders. Other people have spun their own myths around our history and this explains why there are so many misconceptions about who we are and about our right to call the Falklands our home. The series of events which serve as the foundations upon which the Falkland Islands were built are what Our Islands, Our History aims to set out. Our history is one of long periods of tranquillity, punctuated by flurries of complex activity. The events of the 1760s and 1770s are involved but, with the help of the time line running throughout this publication, hopefully comprehensible. The period 1820 to 1833 is also complex and further complicated by the tendency to weave nationalist myths around the basic narrative. Although not a heavyweight reference document, this book is intended to explain to the interested reader how our diverse community has matured, embracing influences from the many nations whose sailors visited these shores or who settled in the Islands, developing a cultural identity all of our own, but always maintaining a close kinship with Britain.
