Call for Fellowship Applications at the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives
H-Judaic Call for Fellowship Applications at the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives Discussion published by Dana Herman on Sunday, January 7, 2018 The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives is pleased to invite applications to its annual Fellowship Program for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Marcus Center's Fellowship Program provides recipients with month long fellowships for research and writing at The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, located on the Cincinnati campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Fellowship stipends will be sufficient to cover transportation and living expenses while in residence in Cincinnati. Applicants for the Marcus Center Fellowship Program must be conducting serious research in some area relating to the history of North American Jewry. Typically, Marcus Center Fellowships will be awarded to post-doctoral candidates, Ph.D. candidates who are completing dissertations, and senior or independent scholars. Applicants must submit a fellowship application together with a five-page (maximum) research proposal that outlines the scope of their project and lists those collections at the American Jewish Archives that are crucial to their research. Applicants should also submit two letters of support, preferably from academic colleagues. For graduate and doctoral students, one of these two letters must be from their dissertation advisor. Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). Rav Kook and Dr. Revel: a Shared Vision for a Central Universal Yeshiva?
NATAN OPHIR Rav Kook and Dr. Revel: A Shared Vision for a Central Universal Yeshiva? his article examines a little known episode in the history of two famous schools, Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav-Central Universal TYeshiva (CUY) 1 and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). Specifically, it examines several exchanges between R. Abraham Isaac Kook and R. Dr. Bernard Revel. Their discussion began in 1918, continued when R. Kook visited New York in 1924, and culminated in a written proposal by Dr. Revel on May 17, 1927. The proposal would have meant uniting what we now call the Torah u- Madda 2 ideology developed in New York with Torat Ere z. Yisrael of Jerusalem. There are lacunae in this story that leave room for speculation. Nevertheless, the main plot will, I believe, be of special interest to read - ers of this journal, and may give rise to interesting observations about the protagonists. Besides adding a chapter to the history of Torah u- Madda in the twentieth century, this story provides a glimpse into a rel - atively unknown phase in the early development of both Yeshiva College and CUY. Yet when the Torah tells us (14:22), “You shall fully tithe ( aser te’aser ) all the produce of your field,” our Sages derive another concept. “ Aser bishvil shetis’asher ,” they say. “Tithe in order that you shall become wealthy.” Why is this so? When the charity a person gives, explains Rav Levi Yitzchak, comes up to Heaven, its provenance is scrutinized. Why was this particular amount giv en to charity? Then the relationship to the full amount of the harvest is discovered. There is a ration of ten to one, and the amount given is one tenth of the total. In this way the entire harvest participates in the mitzvah but only in a secondary role. Therefore, if the charity was given with a full heart, the person giving the charity merits that the quality of his donation is elevated. The following year, the entire harvest is elevated from a secondary role to a primary role in the giving of the charit y. Bamidbar Beilis & the Talmud on Trial Believe it or not, in Jordan, the entire Talmud was recently translated to Arabic, with 20 volumes becoming available. It took over six years for 90 Arabic scholars to translate the Talmud from Aramaic to Arabic—and once it went to print, it went on sale all over the Arab world. The editors of the project pride themselves on the fact that it’s a first-ever and historical breakthrough. They explained that they wanted to present to the Arab academic world the roots of Jewish thinking as found in the Talmub Bavli, the Babylonian Talmud. And their translation has already been dubbed “the Ninety Translation.” But for all of Jewish history, Jews have had mixed feelings about translating the Talmud. On the one hand, it’s very good when people seek out Jewish thinking. But on the other hand, there can be major problems from this, because when they find certain expressions in the Talmud that have not been translated properly, they can be interpreted as attacks on other religions. And I’d like to give you one example of this. Melted margarine - Melted chocolate Steps: - Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl - Drop spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet, you can shape them with your fingers a little - Bake at 325 for 20 minutes and let cool for 1-2 min and then remove them from sheet - Spoon or drizzle melted chocolate of your choice on top of macaroons (tip: pour melted chocolate in a ziploc baggie, snip o corner and drizzle over macaroons) Chocolate Covered Matzo Toee Ingredients: - 3 to 4 pieces of matzo (enough to fill 2 cookie sheets) - 2 sticks of butter - 1 cup of brown sugar - Chocolate chips (any kind!)
