SARNA "Pues have never yet found an historian," John M. Neale com plained, when he undertook to survey the subject of church seating for the Cambridge Camden Society in 1842. 1 To a large extent, the same situation prevails today in connection with "pues" in the American syn agogue. Although it is common knowledge that American synagogue seating patterns have changed greatly over time - sometimes following acrimonious, even violent disputes - the subject as a whole remains unstudied, seemingly too arcane for historians to bother with. 2 Seating patterns, however, actually reflect down-to-earth social realities, and are richly deserving of study. Behind wearisome debates over how sanctuary seats should be arranged and allocated lie fundamental disagreements over the kinds of social and religious values that the synagogue should project and the relationship between the synagogue and the larger society that surrounds it. As we shall see, where people sit reveals much about what they believe. The necessarily limited study of seating patterns that follows focuses only on the most important and controversial seating innovation in the American synagogue: mixed (family) seating. Other innovations - seats that no longer face east, 3 pulpits moved from center to front, 4 free (un assigned) seating, closed-off pew ends, and the like - require separate treatment. As we shall see, mixed seating is a ramified and multifaceted issue that clearly reflects the impact of American values on synagogue life, for it pits family unity, sexual equality, and modernity against the accepted Jewish legal (halachic) practice of sexual separatiop in prayer. -

JEWISH STATISTICS 277 JEWISH STATISTICS The statistics of Jews in the world rest largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. THE UNITED STATES ESTIMATES As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or natural- ized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living in this country are based upon estimates. Rav Kook and Dr. Revel: a Shared Vision for a Central Universal Yeshiva?
NATAN OPHIR Rav Kook and Dr. Revel: A Shared Vision for a Central Universal Yeshiva? his article examines a little known episode in the history of two famous schools, Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav-Central Universal TYeshiva (CUY) 1 and the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). Specifically, it examines several exchanges between R. Abraham Isaac Kook and R. Dr. Bernard Revel. Their discussion began in 1918, continued when R. Kook visited New York in 1924, and culminated in a written proposal by Dr. Revel on May 17, 1927. The proposal would have meant uniting what we now call the Torah u- Madda 2 ideology developed in New York with Torat Ere z. Yisrael of Jerusalem. There are lacunae in this story that leave room for speculation. Nevertheless, the main plot will, I believe, be of special interest to read - ers of this journal, and may give rise to interesting observations about the protagonists. Besides adding a chapter to the history of Torah u- Madda in the twentieth century, this story provides a glimpse into a rel - atively unknown phase in the early development of both Yeshiva College and CUY. NATAN OPHIR (O FFENBACHER ) directs Meorot, a center in Jerusalem for Jewish Meditation and Neuro-Psychology. An alumnus of Yeshiva College, he received ordination from Yeshivat Mercaz HaRav and a Ph.D in Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he served as rabbi of the campus for sixteen years. The exact spot is marked by an obelisk bearing the date of his death: July 4, 1826—50 years to the day after the Second Continental Congress declared independence. Also close to the home lies a grave belonging to Rachel Phillips Levy. According to the inscription, she died on the 7 of Iyar, 5591, following a calendar used by traditional Jews. How did a Jewish grave end up in Monticello? The answer lies in the history of a family whose own story is every bit as American as that of Jefferson himself. In 1776 a Jewish patriot named Jonas Phillips fled to Philadelphia from New York with the arrival of the British fleet. A decade later, he was well-regarded in his new city, and his daughter Rachel was set to marry a Jewish gentleman named Levy. –– ADVERTISEMENT –– Benjamin Rush —a famous physician, signatory of the Declaration of Independence, and friend to Jefferson—attended the wedding. That Phillips had invited a prominent gentile to a Jewish ceremony, an act unthinkable almost anywhere else at the time, is a sign of the extraordinary freedom Jews had found in this new land. -

Why the Success of Exodus in 1950s America? By Stephanie Schey Capstone Advisor: Dr. Lisa Moses Leff Spring Semester, 2011 University Honors in Jewish Studies College of Arts and Sciences: Jewish Studies 2 Capstone Abstract The positive reception of Exodus , by Leon Uris, in mainstream America during the 1950s is a phenomenon that has been largely overlooked. Arguably too much attention has been directed towards the aftermath of the book and film, without properly situating the novel in the context of current events and public opinion on Judaism and Israel at the time of its release. In order to establish a thorough framework within which to examine the legacy of Exodus , it is essential to understand American society at the time of publication and assess the impact of current events, such as the founding of the state of Israel and the 1956 Suez Crisis, upon the novel’s audience. In so doing, we learn a great deal about America’s attitudes toward Judaism and Israel. This paper explores the climate in America that allowed for the novel's positive reception, identifying the three strongest motivational factors for reading Exodus as: 1) Israel’s portrayal in the media, 2) suburban integration, and 3) Holocaust memory. Divided into three chapters, each portion of the paper analyzes one facet of America’s changing image of Israel or Judaism at the time of the novel’s publication in 1958. 3 Introduction The novel Exodus , written by Leon Uris, was published on September 18, 1958 and commanded immediate fame. Were his words the truth, Uris’s novel could have served as a creation myth for the state of Israel, inspiring nationalism amongst world Jewry and providing heroes for a downtrodden post-Holocaust generation. -

Exploring Judaism’s Denominational Divide Coming to America… Rabbi Brett R. Isserow OLLI Winter 2020 A very brief early history of Jews in America • September 1654 a small group of Sephardic refugees arrived aboard the Ste. Catherine from Brazil and disembarked at New Amsterdam, part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. • The Governor, Peter Stuyvesant, petitioned the Dutch West India Company for permission to expel them but for financial reasons they overruled him. • Soon other Jews from Amsterdam joined this small community. • After the British took over in 1664, more Jews arrived and by the beginning of the 1700’s had established the first synagogue in New York. • Officially named K.K. Shearith Israel, it soon became the hub of the community, and membership soon included a number of Ashkenazi Jews as well. • Lay leadership controlled the community with properly trained Rabbis only arriving in the 1840’s. • Communities proliferated throughout the colonies e.g. Savannah (1733), Charleston (1740’s), Philadelphia (1740’s), Newport (1750’s). • During the American Revolution the Jews, like everyone else, were split between those who were Loyalists (apparently a distinct minority) and those who supported independence. • There was a migration from places like Newport to Philadelphia and New York. • The Constitution etc. guaranteed Jewish freedom of worship but no specific “Jew Bill” was needed. • By the 1820’s there were about 3000-6000 Jews in America and although they were spread across the country New York and Charleston were the main centers. • In both of these, younger American born Jews pushed for revitalization and change, forming B’nai Jeshurun in New York and a splinter group in Charleston. -
