MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Pram Shankar Prasad 1963 ~“- w IIUL 1.1 3 8 02 2832 )\ ‘II Lh" Us F' ABSTRACT STUDY ON FISH PARASITE OF LAKE MANITOU, MICHIGAN WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INFESTATION OF SMALLMOUTH BASS BY THE BASS TAPEWORM, PROTEOCEPHALUS AMBLOPLITIS (LEIDY) by Prem Shankar Prasad This is a report of an investigation of the degree of infestation of smallmouth bass of Lake Manitou, Michigan, by the bass tapeworm, Proteocephalus amblgplitis, and the extent of host tissue damage. A sample of 42 fishes was examined in this study Which was represented by 36 small- mouth bass, five yellow perch, and one green sunfish. Al- together, nine different species of helminth parasites from the three phyla were recovered. The larval stage of the bass tapeworm (plerocercoids) were present in all the 42 fishes examined and were found to be most damaging. The extent of damage is greater in the females than in the males of the same age group. A study on larval lengths revealed that gonads, especially the ovaries, are better suited for the growth of these larvae. As the fish advance in age the larvae in the gonads also increase in length. The rate of growth of larvae is approximately three times greater in Prem Shankar Prasad the females than in the males. -

The worms are compared to other Opechona species occurring on the Brazilian coast, but no association has been made because only adult forms of these species have been described. Suppositions as to the possible transference of the parasites are made. A compilation of 107 references dealing with fish parasites in New Caledonia permitted the production of a parasite-host list and a host-parasite list. The lists include Turbellaria, Monopisthocotylea, Polyopisthocotylea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Copepoda, Isopoda, Acanthocephala and Hirudinea, with 580 host-parasite combinations, corresponding with more than 370 species of parasites. Protozoa are not included. Platyhelminthes are the major group, with 239 species, including 98 monopisthocotylean monogeneans and 105 digeneans. Copepods include 61 records, and nematodes include 41 records. The list of fish recorded with parasites includes 195 species, in which most (ca. 170 species) are coral reef associated, the rest being a few deep-sea, pelagic or freshwater fishes. The serranids, lethrinids and lutjanids are the most commonly represented fish families. Although a list of published records does not provide a reliable estimate of biodiversity because of the important bias in publications being mainly in the domain of interest of the authors, it provides a basis to compare parasite biodiversity with other localities, and especially with other coral reefs. The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes. -

Connior Life Sciences, Northwest Arkansas Community College, Bentonville, AR 72712 Abstract: Between May 2013 and September 2015, two amphibian and eight reptilian species/ subspecies were collected from Atoka (n = 1) and McCurtain (n = 31) counties, Oklahoma, and examined for helminth parasites. Twelve helminths, including a monogenean, six digeneans, a cestode, three nematodes and two acanthocephalans was found to be infecting these hosts. We document nine new host and three new distributional records for these helminths. Disease severity ranges from being rapidly fatal to low- grade chronic infections that may be asymptomatic for many years. The most significant zoonotic waterborne helminthic diseases are either snail-mediated, copepod-mediated or transmitted by faecal-contaminated water. Snail-mediated helminthiases described here are caused by digenetic trematodes that undergo complex life cycles involving various species of aquatic snails. These diseases include schistosomiasis, cercarial dermatitis, fascioliasis and fasciolopsiasis. The primary copepod-mediated helminthiases are sparganosis, gnathostomiasis and dracunculiasis, and the major faecal-contaminated water helminthiases are cysticercosis, hydatid disease and larva migrans. Generally, only parasites whose infective stages can be transmitted directly by water are discussed in this article. Although many do not require a water environment in which to complete their life cycle, their infective stages can certainly be distributed and acquired directly through water. Transmission via the external environment is necessary for many helminth parasites, with water and faecal contamination being important considerations. -
