Leadership in a Changing New Zealand Saturday 9th September 2017 Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre, Auckland, 8.30 am–12.30 pm What is leadership? What leadership does New Zealand need in a changing world? What role might Rotary play? Rotary New Zealand, together with Leadership New Zealand, invite Rotarians to attend the Future Leaders Forum - a unique opportunity for Rotarians to meet and interact with significant civic, commercial, community and Rotary leaders for an inspirational and informative forum. The Future Leaders Forum runs on Saturday from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm as part of the Zone 7B Symposium programme that continues through to mid-day on Sunday. Rotarians registering for the Future Leaders Forum will also be able to stay on and attend the Saturday afternoon Symposium sessions which will continue the focus on how Rotary and Rotarians can ‘be the future’. Attendees at the Future Leaders Forum should be prepared to engage in participatory and challenging conversations with these well regarded New Zealanders and Rotarian leaders around the future of New Zealand and how Rotary can help lead that future. Speakers at the Future Leaders Forum include: Sir Anand Satyanand GNZM, QSO, KStJ – Former Governor General of New Zealand. Sir Anand is a former lawyer, judge and ombudsman. He was the 19th Governor-General of New Zealand, from 2006 to 2011. Since returning to regular civilian life, Satyanand chaired the Commonwealth Foundation for two two-year terms, ending December 2016, and he is currently leading the Commonwealth team observing the national elections of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. He is an active member of the Rotary Club of Wellington, a Paul Harris Fellow, and in 2011 received the Rotary International Award of Honour. Jenny Gill, ONZM – CEO Foundation North and former Advisory Trustee of Leadership New Zealand. In 2004 Jennifer became CEO of Foundation North after 10 years as Executive Director of Fulbright NZ. Her career in philanthropy began in 1985 when Sir Roy McKenzie appointed her as the Executive Officer of his personal foundation, the Roy McKenzie Foundation. She has been a Trustee and Chair of the J R McKenzie Trust and is currently a Trustee of two family grant making trusts. She was a founding member of the board of the Wellington Regional Community Foundation, the Funding Information Service and Philanthropy NZ. Jenny recently retired from the board of Philanthropy New Zealand after twenty years’ service. Recently Jenny has been a member of the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium as well a participant in international meetings on current issues in philanthropy hosted by the Rockefeller and Volkswagen Foundations. Jenny has contributed to the growing literature on philanthropy in Australasia and is frequently asked to speak on philanthropy. In 2017, Jenny received an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to philanthropy. Rez Gardi – Young New Zealander of the Year 2017. Rez is the Young New Zealander of the Year for 2017. Born in a refugee camp in Pakistan, Rez’s family were forced to flee their homeland to escape the persecution of Kurds. She spent the first six years of her life in a refugee camp before her family resettled in New Zealand. Rez is now New Zealand’s first Kurdish female lawyer and works in corporate litigation at law firm, Chapman Tripp. She previously worked at the United Nations Office in Nairobi as a human rights intern and she represented New Zealand at the Global Refugee Youth Consultations and annual United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – Non-Government Organisation consultation in Geneva last June. Penny Hulse – Councillor and Committee Chair, Auckland City Council, Trustee of Leadership New Zealand and Alumni of the 2008 LNZ Leadership Programme. Penny Hulse is a New Zealand politician, and was Deputy Mayor of Auckland from the formation of the Auckland Council Super City until 2016. She continues to represent the Waitakere ward on the Auckland Council and is Chair of the Environment and Community Committee, one of the three over-arching Council committees. She began her career in 1992 when she was elected to the Waitakere Community Board. In 1995 she was elected to the Waitakere City Council and was made deputy mayor in 2007 by Bob Harvey. In the 2010 Auckland Council elections Penny won a seat in the Waitakere ward and was appointed Deputy Mayor. She was re-elected in 2013 and again in 2016 when she was also elected to the Waitakere Licensing Trust. Penny lives in Te Atatu Peninsula and took up cycling to work in the Auckland CBD when the Nelson Street Cycleway was opened in December 2015. Ross Buckley – Executive Chairman KPMG New Zealand. Ross is the Executive Chairman of KPMG New Zealand and a member of KPMG’s Global Council. During his 30-year career with KPMG, he has managed the firm’s Audit and Tax practices in addition to the firm’s People, Performance and Culture function. Ross also serves as client relationship lead partner for a number of KPMG’s key clients. Ross passionately believes the role of KPMG is to help fuel New Zealand’s prosperity: “New Zealand is an economy that is highly influenced by the success of its enterprises. Through helping New Zealand’s enterprises and organisations succeed and our communities grow, our country will succeed and prosper.” Pat Snedden, MNZM – Business Advisor and Community Leader. Presenter for Leadership New Zealand Leadership Programme. Pat began his professional life in publishing after graduating in 1979 from Auckland University in accounting, economics and anthropology. He has been self- employed since 1984. From 1982 – 2008 he worked as an economic adviser to the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Maori Trust Board and was part of their Treaty negotiation team. In 2008 he was appointed Chief Crown Negotiator in the Muriwhenua treaty claims for the Far North region. To date four out of the five tribal groups have progressed to deed ratification. He has been a corporate director and was a founding director of Mai FM, this country’s first Maori commercial radio station. He has had roles in public sector governance and chaired the Housing New Zealand Corporation and the Auckland District Health Board. He was also a director on Watercare Services, a wastewater and water company for Auckland. Currently he is a director of the Ports of Auckland. In 2011 he helped to establish a new educational trust devoted to accelerating improvement in Maori and Pasifika educational outcomes. The Manaiakalani Educational Trust works in Tamaki with nine schools and 2,500 children to use high-end technology to accelerate learning improvement for these children. Patrick is the executive Chair of the Trust. John Hewko – Rotary International General Secretary. John Hewko is the general secretary of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, managing one of the world’s largest global humanitarian service organisations. Rotary and its Foundation support 1.2 million Rotary club members in their volunteer efforts to serve their local and global communities. Hewko holds a law degree from Harvard University, a master’s in modern history from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar) and a bachelor’s in government and Soviet studies from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, USA. He speaks five languages besides English: Czech, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian.
