    1 Chapter 4 Phytomorph and Geomorph Identification © This Chapter is based on three published works: (1) a paper by Hugh O Neall (1944) that identifies two New World plants (sunflower and chili peppers) in the Voynich manuscript; (2) a paper of Tucker and Talbert (2013) which identified 39 plants in the Voynich as indigenous to the New World; (3) a paper by Tucker and Janick (2016) which extended the list to 59 species. Although many of the illustrations of the Voynich Codex on first blush could be considered bizarre or whimsical (See Figure in Chapter 14) most contain morphological structures which permit botanical identification. Many enthusiasts have attempted to analyze the plants of the Voynich Codex, but few are knowledgeable plant taxonomists or botanists, despite their large web presence. Most of the plant identification has been predicated on the conclusion that the Voynich is a 15th century European manuscript (Friedman 1962). The principal reports in a web report by non botanists Edith and Erica Sherwood (http:www.edithsherwood.comn/coyhnich_botanical_plants) who identifies he plants as Mediterranean based on their premise that Voynich is a 15th century Italian manuscript and claims to find signature of Leonardo da Vinci in voynich drawings. We respectfully disagree with both assertions. The first exception to the conclusion that the Voynich plants were European is a short remarkable 1944 paper in Speculum (a refereed journal of the Medieval Academy of America) by the distinguished plant taxonomist, the Rev./Dr. Hugh O’Neill (1894–1969), former Director of the Herbarium (official acronym LCU) at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C.

Jarrett)1 FOREWORD The following treatments of Artocarpus, Hullettia, Parartocarpus, and Prainea are based on the monograph by Jarrett (1959–1960) and on the treatments she made for this Flora in cooperation with Dr. M. Jacobs in the 1970s. These included some new Artocarpus species described in 1975 and the re-instatement of A. peltata. Artocarpus lanceifolius subsp. clementis was reduced to the species, in A. nitidus the subspe- cies borneensis and griffithii were reduced to varieties and the subspecies humilis and lingnanensis included in var. nitidus. The varieties of A. vrieseanus were no longer recognised. More new Malesian species of Parartocarpus were described by Corner (1976), Go (1998), and in Artocarpus by Kochummen (1998). A manuscript with the treatment of the other genera was submitted by Corner in 1972. Numerous changes to the taxonomy, descriptions, and keys have been made to the original manuscripts, for which the present first author is fully responsible. Nevertheless, urban vegetation is understudied outside central Europe and particularly, little is known about the flora of tropical Asian, African and Latin American cities. We present an estimate of how the vegetation has changed in the city of San José, Costa Rica, after about one century, with the repeat photography technique (based on a collection of 19th and early 20th century photographs by José Fidel Tristán and others) and with data from the Costa Rican National Herbarium. We found little vegetation change in the landscape of San José during the 20th century, where a total of 95 families and 458 species were collected in the late 19th and early 20th century. The families with most species were Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, Lamiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Solanaceae, Cyperaceae, Acanthaceae, Malvaceae, Piperaceae and Verbenaceae. Similar results have been found in Europe, where the number of plant species often is stable for long periods even when the individual species vary. Rev. Biol. Trop. 58 (4): 1367-1386. ABSTRACT Th is study aimed to obtain new information about the distribution, morphology and content of secretory trichomes present in the vegetative and reproductive organs of four species of Moraceae: Artocarpus heterophyllus, Dorstenia cayapia, Maclura tinctoria and Sorocea bonplandii. Stem, leaf, fl ower and infl orescence samples were processed for scanning electron and light microscopy. Th e species have secretory trichomes on the leaf blade, petiole and stem and also on the infl orescence and fl owers of D. cayapia and S. bonplandii and on the peduncle of the infl orescence in A. heterophyllus. Th ese trichomes are of the capitate type in all species, but A. heterophyllus also possess peltate secretory trichomes. Both trichome types exhibit a multicellular head and a unicellular peduncle. Peduncle size and head cell number varies according to species. Peltate trichomes located in depressions were found only in species of Artocarpus, and so should be of diagnostic value for the genus. In all species the trichomes secrete polysaccharides, alkaloids and lipids; phenolic compounds occur in A. heterophyllus and M. tinctoria trichomes. Th ese trichomes probably act in the protection against herbivores, pathogens, desiccation and/ or UV radiation. Moreover, the trichomes found in the infl orescence of D. cayapia may exert a function in pollen grain adhesion.
