This Seth Waddell was a grandson of the immigrant, John Waddell. In August 1967, Mr. Kenneth M. Waddell met with the family of Oliver Waddell in Centre, Alabama. An article appeared in the Cherokee County Herald, August 2, 1967 issue regarding this reunion. The article states in part: John Waddell fled to America for his life about the year 174-7 • Born In Donegal County, Ireland, of Scottish Highland parents, he had, like many of the Highlanders, espoused the cause of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" Stuart in his efforts to win back the thrones of Scotland and England. After the disastrous defeat of the bloody Battle of Culloden and the English set out to exterminate the clansmen, John showed discretion and came to America. John lived for a few yea.TS near Germantown, Pennsylvania, where he married and started his family then he went south and in 177** settled in "the little bend" of the Ilolichucky River in what is now Washington County, East Tennessee. He bought his farm directly from the Indians and on it, he and his wife reared, a large family and spent their declining years. This was near Jonesboro. In I832, a grandson of John Waddell, the immigrantj Seth Quee Waddell, left East Tennessee and went south into Georgia and was never heard from again. Mr. Kenneth 11. 30 LEDGER OF SILAS SMITH The following information was sent to the Editor by Mr. Charles Perry Smith, 1031 Rolling Fields, Columbia, Tennessee 38I+OI on April 8, 1969. Mr. Smith's letter states in part: "My great-great grandfather ran a store at Cedar Bluff way back when it was Indian Territory and I thought that you or your correspondents might be interested in the list of names which I copied from a ledger kept by him or his son. These people were his customers and cover a period from December I84-I to August 181+2. "My ancestor was named Silas Smith. In I838 he left Cedar Bluff and went west with the Cherokee Indians, eventually settling in Weatherford County, Texas. He left the store with his son who was also named Silas. I have seen, in years past, a portion of his ledger for the years I83I-33 but I do not know where it is now." Mr. Smith enclosed a family chart on his Smith Family which shows that Silas Smith was born 1760 and died in 1864- in Weather- ford County, Texas, aged 104- years. He was married twice, first to Sarah Pitman and second to Ann Legg. He established Smith's Chapel in Cherokee County, Alabama. A BATTLE FLAG Inquirer. September 9, 1893 The notablest thing at the Veteran's picnic last Saturday was the battle flag of Company "G", Third Alabama Cavalry. This splendid Regiment was organized at Tupelo, Miss., in June 1862, of Companies that had been in service for months. Several of which had fought at Shiloh. It formed part of the Brigade composed of the First, Third, Fourth, Ninth, Twelfth and Fifty-First Alabama Cavalry Regiment which was commanded first by Gen. Allen of Montgomery, Ala., and later by Gen. Hogan of Mobile, Ala. The Regiment fought at Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Massy Creek and Strawberry Plains. Company "G" raised in Calhoun County and carried to the field by Capt. D. P. Forney, bore its full share of the hardships, conflicts and fatalities of the Regiment from its organization to its surrender and every battlefield from Shiloh to Chapel Hill was stained by its blood. A. 0. Stewart of this place (now Piedmont) was First Lt. and by all accounts, was the daringest of all the daring Cavaliers in that body of matchless men who never counted heads or hands when an enemy was at sight. In June or July 1862 at Huntsville a flag was presented to this Company by Mrs. C. C. Clay, who subsequently became the wife and is now the widow of the late Judge Clopton of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and this was carried by stout arms and loyal hearts wherever the command marched or fought to the end. It finally was brought home by Capt. Forney who turned it over to Lt. Stewart in whose family until last Saturday it was treasured as a priceless relic. It was taken to the picnic by the widow of the gallant Lt. whose valor and good conduct had contributed so much to the renown of the Company and was viewed and handled with strong and strange emotions by the battlescarred heroes who had come together there. At the cease of the day's exercises, it was turned over to the care and keeping of Orderly Sergt. S. E. Dowell, the ranking survivor of the Company.
