Advisory Visit River Bollin, Styal Country Park, Cheshire February 2010 1.0 Introduction This report is the output of a site visit undertaken by Tim Jacklin of the Wild Trout Trust to the River Bollin, Cheshire on 19th February 2010. Comments in this report are based on observations on the day of the site visit and discussions with Kevin Nash (Fisheries Technical Specialist) and Andy Eaves (Fisheries Technical Officer) of the Environment Agency (EA), North West Region (South Area). Normal convention is applied throughout the report with respect to bank identification, i.e. the banks are designated left hand bank (LHB) or right hand bank (RHB) whilst looking downstream. 2.0 Catchment / Fishery Overview The River Bollin is 49 km long and rises in the edge of Macclesfield Forest, flowing west to join the River Mersey (Manchester Ship Canal) near Lymm. The River Dean is the major tributary of the Bollin, and the catchment area totals 273 km2. The section of river visited flows through Styal Country Park, downstream of Quarry Bank Mill, and is owned by the National Trust. A previous Wild Trout Trust visit was carried out further downstream at the National Trust property at Dunham Massey. The Bollin falls within the remit of the Mersey Life Project which aims to carry out a phased programme of river restoration, initially focussing on the non-tidal section of the River Mersey, the River Bollin and River Goyt (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/wildlife/102362.aspx). The construction of fish passes on Heatley and Bollington Mill weirs in the lower Bollin catchment means it is now possible for migratory species (e.g.

DL Mr D P Harrison Professor G E Cherry To the Rt Hon William Whitelaw, CH MC MP Secretary of State for the Home Department PROPOSALS FOR THE FUTURE ELECTORAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE COUNTY OF CHESHIRE 1. The last Order under Section 51 of the Local Government Act 1972 in relation to the electoral arrangements for the districts in the County of Cheshire was made on 28 September 1978. As required by Section 63 and Schedule 9 of the Act we have now reviewed the electoral arrangements for that county, using the procedures we had set out in our Report No 6. 2. We informed the Cheshire County Council in a consultation letter dated 12 January 1979 that we proposed to conduct the review, and sent copies of the letter to the district councils, parish councils and parish meetings in the county, to the Members of Parliament representing the constituencies concerned, to the headquarters of the main political parties and to the editors both of » local newspapers circulating in the county and of the local government press. Notices in the local press announced the start of the review and invited comments from members of the public and from interested bodies. 3» On 1 August 1979 the County Council submitted to us a draft scheme in which they suggested 71 electoral divisions for the County, each returning one member in accordance with Section 6(2)(a) of the Act.

  • Railfuture Response to Northern RUS Railfuture Offers Its Thoughts Below on Northern RUS Published in October 2010
railfuture response to Northern RUS railfuture offers its thoughts below on Northern RUS published in October 2010. Our response is in two parts: firstly responses to strategies identified in the document itself (“Gaps” in the language it uses) and then where we feel it does not address particular issues, we offer our alternatives ideas. railfuture have concerns about the forecasting period that is covered in this RUS. Whilst there are many references to a 20 or 30-year timescale, there is very little detail of what a future railway network might look like. We are disappointed that high speed rail appears to be the only long term vision for rail. We need a radical, expansionist vision for the “normal” railway. The railway should provide a much broader range of travel opportunities than at present through the reopening of old lines, the opening of new lines and the opening/re-opening of stations. The railway should meet the challenge of encouraging modal shift from the roads for both environmental (climate change and pollution reasons) and to ease congestions and make road traffic easier for essential journeys. What is needed are major and significant enhancements to the network to improve both its scope and capacity. What is going to happen by 2050? It is anticipated that the new franchises will cover a 15-year period yet this RUS is essentially concerned with CP4. Too much in this document is about 'nipping and tucking' services within the constraints of the current infrastructure. The importance of the Northern region must not be under estimated; the four Metropolitan counties combined have a similar population to Greater London.

I am a retired Chartered Chemist, a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Member of the Chartered Quality Institute. For the last 15 years I have been Chair of the Planning Committee of Brickhill Parish Council, an urban parish council in the north of Bedford. 2 I have also been Chair of the Cycling Campaign for North Bedfordshire (CCNB) for the last four years and Vice-Chair for the previous 14 years. 3 CCNB has been promoting cycling and campaigning for cycle infrastructure in the Bedford area since 1992. 4 CCNB does not object to Network Rail's proposed rebuild of the Bromham Road railway bridge to allow the Midland Main Line to be electrified as far as Corby, only to the plans absence of a dual use footway/cycleway across the bridge. 5 Bedford has always been a 'Town of Cyclists'. 5.1 Way back in 1935 a Ministry of Transport census showed that cycles accounted for 80% of vehicular traffic in Bedford, similar to levels found in the Netherlands. 5.2 In 1945 a traffic census found that 'for 10 minutes in one midday period cyclists passed the census takers at the rate of three thousand per hour'.

If they attended school at all they would have gone to a School run by a charity or religious society, a Dame school, a Sunday school or even a workhouse school. Evidence for the education of girls before the 19th Century is scanty but the Emery’s Charity School in Meppershall was teaching girls to read in the late 17th Century (P29/25/1).
