By focusing on how Chinese Canadian writers and artists honour and remember the nation-building contributions and sacrifices of Chinese labourers in stories set in Canada during the period of anti-Chinese legislation policies such as the Chinese Head Tax and the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act, this thesis provides a critical look at the values and ideologies that these narratives may draw upon. It asks whether it is possible for writers and artists to commemorate Chinese labour stories without also extending the colonization of Indigenous peoples, forgetting the history of Asian-Indigenous relationships, or promoting work ethic values that may hinder community building with Indigenous peoples and respecting Indigenous ways of living and working off the land. This study explores questions of history, memory, national belonging, social justice, decolonization, and relationship building. iii ABSTRACT This project provides a coalitional reading of Chinese Canadian literature, film, and history based on an allegorical framework of Asian-Indigenous relationalities. It tracks how Chinese labour stories set during the period of Chinese exclusion can not only leverage national belonging for Chinese settlers but also be reread for a different sense of belonging that remains attentive to other exclusions made natural by settler colonial discourses and institutional structures, that is, the disavowal of Indigenous presence and claims to sovereignty and autochthony. It contributes to important discussions about the experiences of racism and oppression that typically privilege the relations and tensions of diasporic and Indigenous communities but hardly with each other. What is more, this study aligns with a recent surge of interest in investigating Asian-Indigenous relations in Asian Canadian, Asian American, and Asian diaspora studies. The political investments driving this project show a deep commitment to anti- racist and decolonial advocacy. By examining how Chinese cultural workers in Canada have tried to do justice to the Head Tax generation’s experiences of racial exclusion and intersectional oppressions in fiction, non-fiction, graphic non-fiction, and documentaries, it asks whether there are ways to ethically assert an excluded and marginalized Chinese presence in the context of the settler colonial state. By doing justice to the exclusion of Chinese settlers in the national imaginary, do Chinese cultural workers as a result perform an injustice to the originary presence of Indigenous peoples? The officials claimed the land for the government. The natives were astonished by the claim. They couldn’t understand what those relative newcomers were talking about.

Portier This dissertation - a postcolonial re-examination of Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish priest often called “The Protector of the Indians” - is a conversation between three primary components: a biography of Las Casas, an interdisciplinary history of the conquest of the Americas and early Latin America, and an analysis of the Spanish debate over the morality of Spanish colonialism. The work adds two new theses to the scholarship of Las Casas: a reassessment of the process of Spanish expansion and the nature of Las Casas’s opposition to it. The first thesis challenges the dominant paradigm of 16th century Spanish colonialism, which tends to explain conquest as the result of perceived religious and racial difference; that is, Spanish conquistadors turned to military force as a means of imposing Spanish civilization and Christianity on heathen Indians.

The first volume, Entry Denied,1 published in 1991, contains eight essays, four of which analyze how the exclu- sion laws and the changing ways in which they were enforced affected Chinese communities in the United States. The other four essays docu- ment how members of those communities dealt with the constraints on their lives by relying on a complex institutional structure that enabled them to combat the laws while connecting them to larger developments in both China and the United States. In contrast to the focus on institu- tions in the first volume, the seven chapters in Claiming America,2 the sec- ond volume published in 1998, explore the multidimensional conscious- ness of individuals. They examine how some first- and second-generation Chinese Americans claimed America as their own by forcefully asserting that they, too, believed in democracy and equality. They declared that Chinese were not simply earning a living in the United States as “sojourn- ers,” but were also self-consciously embracing the American creed despite the fact that their presence was not welcomed on American soil. In the present volume, Chinese American Transnationalism, the eight contribu- tors dissect the many ways in which Chinese living in the United States maintained ties to China through a constant transpacific flow of people, economic resources, and political and cultural ideas, the exclusion laws notwithstanding.

    Exploring the Colonial History of New Mexico Through Artifacts Ramón A. Gutiérrez What relationship does a painting of Saint Anthony of Padua on an elk-skin hide have to an iron spur? On the surface, probably little conjoins them other that they were both produced by artisans in the Kingdom of New Mexico during the eighteenth century. Archaeologists often refer to such material objects as “dumb traces,” not because they are stupid or irrelevant in any way, but because they are mute and silent and do not readily yield their meanings or their grander cultural significance without some prodding and pondering on our part. Such artifacts require interpretation.1 For that, one must first contextualize these objects within denser webs of history, within networks and assemblages of the things humans once made. The broader historical and cultural milieu that led to the creation of this hide painting of Saint Anthony and of the iron spur begins with the Spanish conquest of America, initiated by the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus, which ultimately led to the vanquishment of indigenous peoples throughout the New World. Spain’s overseas empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries extended north from what is now Chile as far as New Mexico and Arizona, and from Cuba westward to the Philippines. 45 The geographer Alfred B. Crosby called the cultural processes unleashed by this colonization the “Columbian exchange,” a set of reciprocal transfers of ideas, technologies and goods that created an infinite array of blendings and bor- rowings, of mixings and meldings, of inventions and wholesale appropriations that were often unique and specific to time and place.2 The New Mexican religious im- age of Saint Anthony of Padua holding the infant Christ was painted with local pigments on an elk-skin hide in 1725, possibly by an indigenous artisan (Figure 1).

Because of the diversity of indigenous peoples and the nation-states in which they are situated, it is impossible to address all the myriad boarding school policies both historically and contemporary.     1 ASIAN-AMERICAN TIMELINE (prepared by Dr. Bonnie Khaw-Posthuma) 1521 Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan claims the Phillipines in the name of the Spanish crown; colonial rule begins in 1565; first Filipinos reportedly arrive in California in 1587. 1790 Congress passes the Naturalization Act – granting U.S. citizenship to all “free white” persons. 1834 Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman known to have visited the U.S. is exhibited in a theater in New York. 1839-1842 China signs the Treaty of Nanjing –opening Chinese ports to trade by Western and later Japanese powers. 1843 Japanese citizen Nakahama Manjiro becomes the 1st Japanese individual to land in the U.S. 1848 First Chinese (two men, one woman) immigrate to the U.S. and land in San Francisco; discovery of gold leads to Chinese immigration to America (also known as “Gold Mountain”). 1852 Lured by the gold rush, more than 20,000 Chinese arrive in California (it was a myth that all Chinese wished to get rich quickly and return—only 50% did). 1853 Several hundred years of isolation end as Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. forces Japan to open its door to foreign commerce. 1854 People vs. Hall, a California case, rules that Chinese cannot testify for or against white persons in court. 1860 A Californian law bars Chinese-Americans, Indians, and African- Americans from public schools. 1865 Plans for the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. are developed, and the Central Pacific Railroad begins hiring Chinese laborers. 1870 Congress grants naturalization rights to free whites and people of African descent, omitting mention of Asian (or as they call it “Oriental”) races.

    JOURNEY TO GOLD MOUNTAIN: Early Chinese Life & Labour in Canada The first recorded Asians in Canada were brought to Vancouver Island in 1788 by the British Captain John Meares to work as shipwrights. About 130 Chinese workers arrived, but shortly thereafter they were cap- tured and imprisoned during the Spanish seizure of Nootka Sound. What happened to them is a mystery, but there are reports that some were taken as forced labourers to Mexico and that some escaped and were captured by the Nootka people or married into their community. GOLD RUSH In 1856, gold was found near the Fraser River in the territory of the Nlaka’pamux First Nations people. Almost immediately, the discovery brought tens of thousands of gold miners to the region, marking the beginnings of white settlement on BC’s mainland. By 1858, Chinese gold miners had also started to arrive, and as word spread about the money to be made, British Columbia became known in China as “Gold Mountain”. By the 1860s, 6000-7000 young Chinese men were living in BC, most intending to return to China with their savings. The Gold Rush brought not only Chinese miners but also the merchants, labour- ers, domestics, gardeners, cooks, launderers and other service industry workers needed to support the large mining communities that sprang up wherever gold was discovered. By 1860, the goldfields of the Fraser canyon were declining and the Gold Rush was redirected into the Cari- boo, where large mining camps sprang up, requiring services that were often provided by the Chinese. These included laundries, restau- rants, vegetable gardens, and fisher- ies.
