‘INSIDE THE GREAT RUPERT HEIST’

SUNDAY TIMES

Listening to my contact tip me off to the burglary of Johann Rupert’s jewellery vault, and explain in detail about how it was done, was like listening to a modern day Robin Hood story. Through my sources, both within the police and the security industry, I was able to break two exclusives on the crime. Despite initial denial and then refusal to comment by Rupert’s Richemont business group and an information clampdown by police, which I later discovered was called for by those linked to Rupert, my sources provided information on exactly how the crime was committed. So intimate was the details, that I was able to build a picture which allowed me to take the reader through the burglary in an almost minute-by-minute account, taking them literally inside the vault as it was burgled. Despite breaking the news of the burglary the week before, my sources and the information which they provided me, enabled us to maintain our exclusive edge in our reporting of the crime for more than a week.

The story came about from a tip-off from a well placed contact within the South African security industry. When I received the tip-off it was just before the paper’s print run was to begin. We had to make hard editorial decisions: do we break the story and run it or do we hold off hoping that no other reporter would pick up on the burglary and get the inside scoop? Knowing that the contact, who has been a source of mine for 15 years, would not speak to any other reporter and establishing from police sources that there was a clampdown on the information on the burglary, we decided to break the story but only in part.

The plan saw us, over the week that followed, secure information on the audacious heist through my network of well placed security, policing and jewellery industry contacts. This information included CCTV footage of the actual burglary taking place, photographs of the aftermath of the crime and documents highlighting how bona fida security guards had indeed GRAEME HOSKEN responded to alarms that had been triggered, but had been duped into believing that everything was alright. ‘GET OUT – A GUTTED DA STUMBLES INTO THE PAST’

DAILY MAVERICK

Richard Poplak has sometimes been referred to as South Africa’s Hunter S. Thompson. Taking gonzo style journalism and training its aim on the journalistic gift that is South African politics. Poplak reads the Zeitgeist leaves of South Africa like few others can and he has the vocabulary and mastery to wrap it up in a verbal delicacy that is a treat. Poplak’s volume of written work has reduced somewhat in the last two years as his adventures in documentary filmmaking consumes more of his time, but when he does write, South Africa reads.

In this piece, Poplak deconstructs the implosion of the Democratic Alliance and its former leader’s efforts to rule beyond the grave. This article was viewed 68k times with an average read time of 8mins. Over the years Zille has come to loathe Poplak’s suitably sharp words describing her journey and mishaps. He ends off this piece capturing things perfectly “Zille has everything she wants, and yet she holds nothing in her hands but ashes.”

RICHARD POPLAK

Richard Poplak is an award-winning author, journalist, and filmmaker. He has become one of the most widely • read and controversial political journalists in South Africa, editing at large for the Daily Maverick. Poplak Get Poplak out 25– aOctober gutted 2019 DA stumbles into the past has reported from over 25 developing countries, for the Financial Times, Atlantic Monthly, The Guardian, among By Richard Poplak others. He was recently part of a team that won the prestigious Global Shining Light award for investigative Well that went south quickly. Zille now has everything she wants, and yet she holds journalism. Southnothing Africa’s in her handsnational but pastime ashes. is the erasure of political memory. Let’s defy that impulse for a moment, and think back to the early months of 2014. Helen Zille — formerly a liberal anti-apartheid journalist; currently a white supremacist “classically liberal” social media ghoul — was at the time the leader of the Democratic Alliance. After purging her party of viable successors, most notably then-parliamentary leader , she was casting around for a black personality with star power to act as a front.

For a brief shining moment, she thought she had found the perfect candidate: Mamphela Ramphele, leader of the nascent Agang political party, one of those pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps-apartheid-is-over-bitch type movements that emerge from the Sandton-tariat every now and again. Agang, backed by fawning white businessmen, was just a few months old and already a non-viable mess. The DA presidential candidacy looked like a serendipitous lifeline.

The arrangement, sealed with a kiss, lasted for 48 hours.

(Some additional intrigue: Zille broke Steve Biko’s murder-in-detention story; Ramphele was Biko’s partner at the time of his death. The intersecting narratives went deep.)

Why are we rehashing this ancient history? It’s to remind ourselves, in the wake of a remodelled Democratic Alliance — one almost entirely denuded of black leadership and re-conceived as a white libertarian beachhead in an ocean of black nationalism — that the party, led in spirit and in fact by Zille since 2007, has always been something of a clown car. A couple of phone calls to previous employers would have disqualified Ramphele for any management position; in a few short months, she had managed to court the loathing of most of the activists in her new party. Only a week or so prior to the announcement of Zille and Ramphele’s political nuptials, the DA don had assured a roomful of journalists that its electoral list—presented with fanfare at the Rosebank Hyatt—was the result of a “democratic process,” unlike that of the wretchedly corrupt and manifestly illiberal African National Congress.

Ramphele’s name was not on the list.

Such humiliation should have provided a moment of real introspection, but the DA doesn’t do introspection—or rather, it does, but not when it comes to Helen Zille. As she’ll be the first to tell you, after ascending to the throne, she doubled their votes in a decade from two million to four million. She’s the moneybags, the bank account, the ATM, the fundraising fount that keeps the Big Blue Machine fuelled up and ready Standard Bank Sikuvile 12 Journalism Awards October 2020

‘ANC GAMBLES ON TWITTER INFLUENCERS’

AMABHUNGANE

This is a story that started with a tweet and grew into an investigation into paid Twitter influencers and politics. In December 2018, I published an investigation into future Johannesburg mayor Geoff Makhubo, showing how his company received R30-million from Regiments Capital, one of the corporate architects of state capture. Makhubo – who at the time was the city’s MEC for finance and the treasurer of the ANC’s Greater Johannesburg region – hit back with an editorial, attempting to explain away the fees. That’s where things got interesting: soon Twitter was flooded with messages supporting Makhubo and deriding amaBhungane’s investigation as nothing more than a DA plot. When other Twitter users started calling out Makhubo’s supporters as “Paid Twitter”, I decided to dig deeper. The investigation that followed led me to prominent influencers, celebrities and the student council elections at Wits University.

It showed how influencers – most in their early twenties – were being deployed to fight political battles. While some of the campaigns were innocuous – promoting the trackrecord of the Progressive Youth Alliance, for instance – the one that targeted amaBhungane was much dirtier: here was a prominent politician accused of siphoning millions off a city contract, and the evidence suggested that a group of young Twitter influencers was mobilised to attack the media house who exposed him. In journalism there is sometimes a chasm between what interests the public and what is in the public interest. With this investigation, I felt I had ticked both the boxes. This was around the time that documentaries and court records were exposing the role of social media influencers in the Fyre festival scam. But more importantly, the investigation highlighted the willingness of some ANC politicians to indulge in new forms of political manipulation, using social media and its young, enthusiastic influencers to fight their battles.

This was my first Twitter investigation and without access to sophisticated software (like Brandwatch) I had to develop my SUSAN COMRIE own method for tracking tweets, identifying influencers and identifying patterns. This meant counting tweets by hand and manually recording content and times in a spreadsheet. Before we published the investigation, I asked a researcher from Susan Comrie took an unconventional career path into a US-based group to confirm my findings using the tools at their disposal. However, this story also involved traditional investigative journalism. After studying graphic design, journalism skills: I looked into all the influencers, but my gut instinct told me that Karabo Motsoane was a central character she joined the Daily Voice as a freelance entertainment and someone who I needed to speak to. That instinct proved right when, purely by chance, I came across a screengrab from and feature writer. She honed her investigative skills, the Wits campaign (posted on Twitter) that identified him as the campaign organiser. One of the biggest challenges was that, aside from the screengrab from the Wits campaign, I could not prove that the influencers were paid. Without an insider first at Carte Blanche and then City Press, before finally or access to bank records it would be impossible to know for sure. After the article was published, a person involved in the getting the chance to join the amaBhungane team in ANC’s election campaign confirmed that influencers on at least one of the campaigns were paid. Many investigations start 2016. with a whistleblower or leaked documents – hard evidence or allegations of wrongdoing. This one started with a tweet from a member of the public. ‘GOVERNMENT OR GOD?’

EWN

This multiplatform entry outlined the conditions that the Water and Sanitation Department is currently in. Using Makhanda as a case study — poor governance, lack of infrastructure maintenance, mismanagement of funds, poor accountability within government, high urbanisation rates and low rainfall patterns — shows what South Africa’s water security situation could be like in the next decade. Since publication, the Water and Sanitation Department sent out more water-saving tanks along with the Makana municipality facing the prospect of being placed under administration.

Housing, electricity and land were one of many promises made by political parties ahead of the 2019 national elections. One topic which seemed to not make the cut was water. EWN set out to discover why water wasn’t mentioned by political parties — but more importantly, to investigate the conditions of South Africa’s water security. During the investigation, EWN uncovered maladministration within government, the lack of accountability, despite scathing reports by the auditor general and poor maintenance or basic infrastructure.

‘CRUISING NICELY ON VBS MONEY’

SCORPIO, DAILY MAVERICK

Since inception, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) campaigned on a ticket of anti-corruption, economic freedom for all and a just South Africa. It took meticulous reporting in the face of an intense fightback campaign, to show that the principles of the country’s third largest political party were all a facade. The catalyst was the heist at VBS Mutual Bank, which revealed the dark underbelly of the EFF. The VBS heist was the most brazen looting at a bank in modern SA history. In all, R2.7bn was stolen from the country’s poorest citizens over four years. Investigators adv. Terry Motau and law firm Werksmans flagged the involvement of ANC insiders, union members, municipal officials and local businessmen. It was however my series of six investigative reports for Scorpio in Daily Maverick, published between April and November 2019, that revealed what had remained hidden: how the EFF leaders, Julius Malema and , had benefited from this heist. It revealed definitively and in detail how Malema and Shivambu used family and front companies to hide their involvement, how Shivambu’s political power won him at least two illegal VBS ‘loans’, and how, damningly, even the EFF’s fourth birthday party was funded by stolen VBS money.

The stories also showed, importantly, that the VBS money wasn’t Malema and Shivambu’s only illegal income streams. After a month’s long smear campaign the EFF publicly banned Scorpio, Daily Maverick and amaBhungane from their press conferences in September 2019, days after receiving another set of questions from amaBhungane and me. This move was widely publicised and debated. I remain blocked by the EFF on Twitter. In June this year, notably days after the first VBS arrests, Malema summoned journalists, including me, by name, to ‘interview’ him in a live conference. I informed Malema through his spokesperson that I am interested and will attend, but on principle argued that Daily Maverick and amaBhungane should first be publicly unbanned before I would do so. Malema refused. At the press conference in quintessential Malema-style he attempted to argue that he was not a beneficiary of the proceeds of crime, but appeared to admit for the first time that his family members may have benefitted from the VBS theft. He, Malema claimed, simply received monetary assistance from his family members and did not ask about the sources of their riches. This is simply an impossible excuse – one that could stand the test of my detailed investigation, and will not stand the test of South African criminal law. Notably, despite all the denials and insults, the EFF leadership did not level a single PAULI VAN WYK complaint to court or the press ombudsman against me.

Pauli van Wyk is a Scorpio Investigative Journalist. “Are we making a difference,” a source asked me in January 2019 early one morning at our meeting in a Seattle coffee shop in a Recruited to Daily Maverick just before the #GuptaLeaks, South African metropole. “We do,” I answered. “Every day. We shine a light on the hidden truth.” On this day, my source provided she is best known for her work on SARS, the justice cluster, me with essential documents and bank statements that proved to be pivotal in my VBS investigation. It enabled me to shine a state politics and the inescapable collision course light on what the EFF-leaders for years had hidden from the public: that they were corrupt and compromised while hounding rival they’re on and, more recently, her expose on the ties politicians like former president Jacob Zuma and former minister of finance Nhlanhla Nene out of their jobs. Crucially, it proved that Malema and Shivambu were involved in much more wrongdoing than just their VBS ties. My source however had a caveat: I between Julius Malema and the looting of VBS Bank. would only be allowed to publish the information if I could personally verify each piece of information from an additional source. BODY OF WORK

NEW FRAME, MAIL & GUARDIAN

‘THE SECOND COMING’

The cartoon mocks the “recolonisation” of the DA by Helen Zille and her faction, following the party’s underwhelming showing in the national elections. With party leader Mmusi Maimane under pressure, Zille was elected as chair of the federal executive council, thus sweeping back to power after a time in the wilderness following her notorious tweet about the supposed benefits of colonialism.

Since the cartoon was published, Zille has deepened the divide in her party between its libertarian wing and those leaders and members, largely black, who believe that affirmative action should be part of the party’s vision of redress. She has also written a similarly incendiary tweet that offered a false equivalence between apartheid laws and those meant to reverse its legacies - a message that heightens the impression that she is an apologist for historical oppression.

CARLOS AMATO

Carlos Amato is the editorial cartoonist for the Mail & Guardian and New Frame, as well as a writer and illustrator. He is formerly the editor of the Sunday Times Lifestyle magazine, and his most recent book is ‘Road to Glory: Wayde van Niekerk’, a biography of the Olympic athlete for young readers.

‘COOKBOOKS’

The cartoon draws a comic contrast between the ANC’s stated opposition to censorship and its skill at another kind of abuse of power — corruption. An accountable state needs to respect two kinds of “books” with equal consistency — and the ANC has failed abysmally to keep its budgetary books in order.

The backstory was the furore surrounding Pieter-Louis Myburgh’s Gangster State — an expose of corruption by ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule. The ANC’s stated opposition to the burning of copies of the book represented a somewhat hollow defense of free speech. Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards 17 October 2020

‘25 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY: A TIMELINE’

CITY PRESS

2019 marked 25 years since the ’94 elections and this graphic depicts how far South Africa has come since then. It is important to celebrate our history, complete with its highs and lows. Even though we have come so far, we need to be reminded that our democracy is still young and there is quite a way still to go. With the design of the timeline, I feel like I’ve succeeded in delivering a large amount of information in a way that’s impactful, clean and concise; readers are able to consume the information without being overwhelmed.

City Press wanted to commemorate the 25 years of democracy in an impactful way and all they had was a large wall of text complete with dates. I thought that a timeline was the best way to present that information because I could break up the text and make it flow chronologically. Instead of using photos in colour, I used black-and-white photos to further drive the archival nature of the timeline; I was basically pulling from the archives of SA history to show the historical highlights from then until present day (April 2019). The limited colour palette and the contrast of the colours including the white space allows the graphic room to breathe while making a strong visual impact.

‘TWO MINISTERS AND A FED-UP SLAY QUEEN’

SUNDAY WORLD

While many people were fascinated by the love triangle involving two ministers (Tito Mboweni and ) and a slay queen (Lerato Makgatho), my motivation behind the story was the implications of such casual sexual relations for the important portfolios the ministers were responsible for. The lady between the ministers, Makgatho, confirmed that the ministers were blackmailed into making payments to keep their indiscretions secret. Minister Mantashe, who was referred to as a Tiger in bed by Makgatho, even claimed to have paid two journalists to keep his affair secret.

Our editor involved SANEF and publicly challenged the minister to name and shame the reporters – which he failed to do. He was asked to release evidence publicly but failed. What the entire episode also helped achieve was to show that behind the casual extra-marital affairs also lay casual lies about bribery – which bring into question the integrity of the statements by the minister. Why should the public trust his word on anything if he can lie not only about his sexual indiscretions, but about bribing journalists too?

So this story, for me, was important on three levels. First, the level of promiscuity among them and the father-daughter age between them ran in the face of a cabinet-approved anti-sugar daddies campaign launched by their health cabinet colleague! Second, the public purse might be at risk if ministers are blackmailed because of their sexual misconduct. And lastly, the lies show a scant regard for integrity at the highest levels of government departments.

My main challenge was that there was only one source, Lerato Makgatho, who is intimately close to the ‘sauce’ of the story, so to put it. For months she did not want to confirm what my other sources were alleging. I did not give up. I kept her close. Eventually she confirmed the details in a telephone interview. Just to make sure, I drove to her home to speak to her in MAMPURU META person. Again, she shared details of relationships and gave us access to her WhatsApp conversations with the ministers, MPHAHLELE implicating specifically Minister Mantashe in cheating on his wife. When Mantashe answered my questions, he not only implicated the unnamed reporters he claimed to have paid, he also Mampuru Meta Mphahlele started her print media implicated himself in criminality (paying bribes). Internally, the editor convened all journalists and questioned them about career before she had even graduated around 2010. Mantashe’s claims – which claims were rejected by all. Others said the bribery claims were a trick to get us to drop the story. She wrote articles for a Polokwane based magazine The editor and I agreed we must call the minister’s bluff – and thus unleashed drama that unfolded publicly for months, with and a local newspaper. She later joined Sunday World some officials saying the paper will start experiencing a decline in government advertising. newspaper in 2018 where she had the opportunity to hone her skills, after being in broadcast media for two years.

‘REFUGEES CLASHES WITH POLICE’

WEEKEND ARGUS

I Have been photographing the group of refugees since they started camping at the Waldorf Arcade at the UNHCR offices in Cape Town CBD. They were protesting Xenophobia and asking for assistance from The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to be repatriated. The group of refugees from more than 10 different countries were at first very accepting of the media and got used to the idea that we were there, however when they read a few negative articles written about them, they became extremely hostile towards all media.

I did not want to give up on the story because of what I saw in the eyes of some of those refugees, I saw sadness, uncertainty, I saw a cry for help, I saw children that needed hope. I initially thought that the protest would end after a few days, I clearly under-estimated the persistence of this group of people. Then I realised that this was way more than just a protest, for them this was the only way and all they had was each other, and they had to stick together.

I had to go through quite a bit to gain the trust of the group and the leaders, and it took a lot. Eventually they got used to me being there with my camera taking pictures and making videos. I have heard many sad stories from the lives of the refugees and how they came to be in South Africa in the first place. I built a bond with these people, I decided to follow the journey of this special group of HUMAN BEINGS. I specifically did not add any images of some of the violent clashes between refugees and the police, the reason for this was because this was way more than just a protest picture.

‘CYCLONE IDAI; FIRST RESPONSE’

SUNDAY TIMES

Every part of our journey into Mozambique was a struggle. We arranged to head into Beira with members of the South African National Defence Force who paired us with a team from Eastern Europe in an old Antonov cargo plane that looked like it belonged in an air museum. It boasted space for the crew of about five members and a collective of four journalists from different media houses. We arrived at Beira airport with very little money, no accommodation booked, the area at the time had no electricity and we couldn’t draw money because ATM’s were down along with all cellular communication. Myself and reporter Jeff Wicks, with the cards stacked against us, worked every possible contact we had, speaking to NGO’s, making friends with locals and after working for a few days in Beira City, managed to schmooze ourselves onto a helicopter flight with Humanitarian Aid Organisation; Gift of the Givers to the small village of Estaquinha where they were working with Offroad Rescue SA to help deliver aid via small boats to villages along the Buzi river who were unreachable. We met a local English teacher Jaoquim Jose, who organised two motorcycles to escort Jeff who is a well built reporter and his rider on one bike, and myself, Jose and the rider on another into Begaja, a small village 10 kilometres down the road. It was the first time that people living there were able to piece together the tragedy that had unfolded. Each one having spent a minimum of three days in trees and on top of buildings. We followed Jose through a muddy path on the grounds where his village once stood, he led me through a massive body of water, waist high, that existed entirely of the flood and that residents of his village, woman and children, had to traverse everyday to usher in supplies and materials for rebuilding. At this point the sun had dipped below the horizon line and it was time to head back to camp. In the process we had learned of terrible stories of loss and endurance, family and loss. People who stood steadfast for generations washed away in an instant. People who experienced an awful trauma and whose voice and story had yet to be told.

‘SIYA KOLISI’

CAPE TIMES

Richie Mo’unga tries to stop a runaway Siya Kolisi at Newlands. Siya who captains the Stormers scored one of the important tries against the Crusaders, who are known to be ruthless against their opponents. The South African team fought back from a 19-10 to make 19-16 towards the end of the game. Stormers were awarded a penalty in the Crusaders’ 22 in the final minute, giving them the option to go for three points and get a draw or kick to the corner and score a try and win. Captain Siya Kolisi opted for poles, with replacement flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis connecting the easy target to get the draw.

Siya Kolisi has been captaining the Stormers for quite some time, being the first black captain for this team, he has been looked closely on his decision and performance on the field. He did not disappoint as he scored one of the important tries against the Crusaders. I managed to capture the moment when he went in between the opposition players to score that important try. The technique of capturing that decisive moment at Newlands Stadium and to tell the story well for those who were not watching was; the timing, anticipation-focusing, composition as well as understanding the game of rugby.

‘WHAT IF WE JUST SHUT DOWN SAA?’

With the problems that the South African Airways (SAA) was facing at the time, it was decided that a visual for the cover showing SAA abandoned, in trouble and rotting away would be fitting to go with the cover line “What if we just shut down SAA.” I entered this cover because I think it’s an example of a picture saying it all. The photoshopped image of a dilapidated, abandoned plane with SAA livery just summed it all up. The story took an in-depth look at the viability and crisis that was going on at SAA.

Shaun Uthum is a graphic designer at the Financial Mail. He’s really lucky to work in a team of creative and inspiring individuals and largely works on the magazine covers. Beyond covers and graphics, you’ll also find him compiling statistics for the magazine.

‘WHO BROKE AUDITING…AND CAN IT BE FIXED?’

The idea behind this cover was the use of a chalkboard to illustrate how the auditing profession was a mess – much like auditors might work out problems visually. Instead, the idea was to use incorrect calculations and highlight the companies that were involved. I’ve entered this cover because I think it was a powerful way to visually explain an abstract concept and reference the very industry the article was about.

‘SA’S CODEINE LOVE AFFAIR’

Using my own fascination for the culture of Hip Hop; I examined the artists who have propelled the pass-time of drinking ‘lean’ into the spotlight, and broke down how this is linked to branches of Hip Hop music called chopped and screwed as well as Trap and how the music is made to sound, how this drug makes you feel. I then experimented with the dangerous tonic myself and clearly described the feeling while relating these to moments in Hip Hop, antagonising this dangerous pass-time while also getting into the statistics of this addiction.

‘LET’S TALK ABOUT PERIOD SEX’

Being a man, I had to go about tackling this delicately but grabbing the subject by the horns. Before penning this article, I myself tried what this piece deals with so as to very vividly inject the experience into the article. This story had my newsroom buzzing with everyone from politics writers to the sports team sharing their views, men and women. This translated to social media when we published what was later, a period sex issue with other related content, draped around my initial idea.

Die lewe van ‘n slagoffer beteken baie min vir die misdadiger, maar die wêreld vir hul geliefdes. Hierdie storie is ‘n voorbeeld van ‘n gesin se rots en anker wat aan die hand van misdaad gesterf het. Beatrice Manuel se lewe is nutteloos in ‘n gewapende roof by haar werk geneem.

‘CRUISING NICELY ON VBS MONEY’

“Are we making a difference,” a source asked me in January 2019 early one morning at our meeting in a Seattle coffee shop in a South African metropole. “We do,” I answered. “Every day. We shine a light on the hidden truth.” On this day, my source provided me with essential documents and bank statements that proved to be pivotal in my VBS investigation. It enabled me to shine a light on what the EFF-leaders for years had hidden from the public: that they were corrupt and compromised while hounding rival politicians like former president Jacob Zuma and former minister of finance Nhlanhla Nene out of their jobs. Crucially, it proved that Malema and Shivambu were involved in much more wrongdoing than just their VBS ties. My source however had a caveat: I would only be allowed to publish the information if I could personally verify each piece of information from an additional source. This method as well as special encrypted communication shielded my sources from public scrutiny. This meant the painstaking investigation progressed slowly, but in the end, it provided a verifiable forensic trail, tracking the money flows from VBS through four front companies, to Malema and Shivambu, without endangering my sources. It proved that VBS depositor’s money was 23/02/2020 The Great VBS Heist: Former ANCYL Limpopo leader’s R3... lavished on clothes, groceries, properties and cars. The first time I heard of VBS Mutual Bank was when Sowetan published a picture of women older than my mother sitting huddled in blankets in the cold outside the bank, some of whom slept there during the night, in a panic to hear what happened to their savings. “How is it possible that our money is just gone”, they asked. I know exactly how devastated my elderly mother would have been, had she experienced the theft of her savings while no one afforded her a proper explanation. On that day I decided that the light will shine on the truth. In early January 2019, a source leaked essential bank statements and supporting documents

A company inextricably linked to the Brothers Shivambu benefited from a questionable R4- million VBS Mutual Bank business loan. Before the bank was put under curatorship, VBS managed to advance about R2.1-million towards the intended business – a wine bar and restaurant in Vilakazi Street, Soweto, provisionally named ‘Grand Azania’.

Because frontman Brian Shivambu did not qualify for the R4-million VBS Mutual Bank business loan, he ceded, with the help of VBS bank managers, an “investment account” containing an allegedly fictitious R4-million to the bank against which he could borrow. If intent to fleece the bank is proven, this will amount to fraud.

The loan was further never serviced. These schemes make the Shivambu loan a quintessential example of how “business” at VBS Mutual Bank was conducted, and why the bank imploded.

This R4-million loan, granted to the slush fund Sgameka Projects, was not detailed in the Motau/Werksmans-report investigating the bank robbery. An analysis of loan documents, emails and bank statements seized from the bank, as well as information from impeccable sources, form the basis of this Scorpio investigation.

The Shivambu brothers deny any wrongdoing.
