William Seward and the Trent Affair http://civilwar150.longwood.edu In late December, 1861, the Trent Affair continued to dominate national and international news, with President Lincoln and his secretary of state, William Seward, both playing major roles in ending the controversy. Born in Orange County, New York in 1801, William H. Seward was one of the most prominent anti-slavery politicians of the mid-1800s, first as a Whig and then as a Republican. He had studied law at Union College in 1820 and within a few years entered the world of politics. Starting in 1830, Seward served in the New York state senate, and in 1838 he became governor of New York for the first of two terms. Even though Seward was born into a slave owning family, his abolitionist stance made him well known and in 1849 and 1855 he was elected to the U.S. Senate. In the aftermath of the Compromise of 1850 he had gained prominence for his “Higher Law” speech opposing the expansion of slavery. Seward hoped to obtain the Republican nomination for president in 1860, and was disappointed when the party chose Abraham Lincoln as its standard bearer. After Lincoln won the presidential election, Seward accepted the position of Secretary of State, hoping he could influence the less- experienced president. Seward and Lincoln clashed over various issues during the early months of the administration, but he eventually developed into an able and loyal cabinet member. In early November 1861, Captain Charles Wilkes of the U.S.S. San Jacinto had seized Confederate diplomats James Mason and John Slidell from British ship Trent. -

The 2014 George C. Marshall Lecture in Military History The Rewards of Risk-Taking: Two Civil War Admirals* James M. McPherson Abstract The willingness to take risks made Rear Admiral David Glasgow Far- ragut, victor at New Orleans in 1862 and Mobile Bay in 1864, the Union’s leading naval commander in the Civil War. Farragut’s boldness contrasted strongly with the lack of decisiveness shown in the failure in April 1863 to seize the port of Charleston, South Carolina, by Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont, whose capture of Port Royal Sound in South Carolina in November of 1861 had made him the North’s first naval hero of the war. Du Pont’s indecisiveness at Charleston led to his removal from command and a blighted career, while the risk-taking Farragut went on to become, along with generals U.S. Grant and Wil- liam T. Whiting ACCORDING TO veteran troupers of the modern theater, there are three bad weeks in the show business — Christmas week. Holy week, and St. Paul. Whether Minnesota's capital city deserves such a reputation is largely a matter of opinion, for there is evidence that poor and mediocre companies have often played to empty theaters in St. Paul, while productions of outstanding merit draw packed houses. What ever St. Paul's present reputation may be, this much is certain — skepticism regarding the city's ability to support the theater did not arise until after the 1850's, for during that feverish decade St. Paul was one of the best towns for summer theatricals in the entire na tion. The financial boom, the flood of summer immigrants, the terri tory's reputation as an ideal vacation spot, and the Mississippi, which provided steamboat transportation for theatrical troupes from St. Louis, New Orleans, and Cincinnati, seem to have been primarily responsible for the theatrical prosperity of the period. At the same time the contributions of a few outstanding personalities should not be overlooked, for without them the first chapter in St. Paul's the atrical history would lose much of its color and fascination. Perhaps the first to deserve mention is none other than the fron tier Jack-of-all-trades, Joseph R. Brown. His achievements as a fur trader, lumberman, land speculator, legislator, politician, newspaper editor, inventor, and founder of cities are well known, but his unique place as an actor has been overlooked. -

William Conway Whittle, Jr., the executive officer (second in command) of the Confederate commerce raider Shenandoah. Lucid and detailed, Whittle's writing illuminates both time-bound details of the Shenandoah's cruise and timeless elements of warship life at sea. The Shenandoah's story began in September 1864, when Confederate agent James D. Bulloch secretly purchased the full-rigged steamer Sea King in England. In the same way he equipped the famed Alabama, Bulloch sent the Sea King to Madeira to rendezvous with another ship that carried her guns, stores, equipment, and officers. On October 19, 1864, Lt. James Iredell Waddell commissioned the Sea King as the CSS Shenandoah and took command, with Whittle as his executive officer. The newly commissioned raider, with less than a third of the crew she needed, set off into the Atlantic. -

Henderson Tinsley Riggan Henderson Tinsley Riggan Chief Electricians Mate Born November 8, 1911 Killed in Action November 1, 1944 Henderson Tinsley Riggan was born on November 8, 1911, in Surry County, North Carolina. He was the second child and oldest son of James Thomas and Dora Hatcher Riggan. James was born in 1871 and Dora was born in 1881, and they got married on April 29, 1909. Called “Tinsley” by his family, he was named after his grandfathers, Robert Henderson Riggan and Jesse Tinsley Hatcher. His grandmothers were Lucy Ann Hodges Riggan and Mary Etta Creed Hatcher, all of which lived in North Carolina. Tinsley had four sisters, Lucy Etta, Beulah Eastman, Dora Belle Ellen and Virginia Dare, who died when she was two months old, and three brothers, Reuben DeWitt, Roland Ellsworth and Bedford Brown. In addition he had five half siblings, Lala Infanta, Cora Thelma, Frances Manie, Thomas Manley, who died when he was two months old, and Lloyd Vestal from James’ first marriage. Other than Thomas, they were all very young when their mother died and were raised by Tinsley’s mother, Dora. The Riggans moved to Hopewell in 1922, and lived at 1711 Atlantic Street then later at 100 South 5th Avenue. Tinsley’s father ran a service station on Rt. 10 and later a grocery store on 15th Avenue, and attended Primitive Baptist Church near Fort Lee.
