The present paper examines articulatory details of the production of multiple consonants by an aglossic speaker. Method: Real-time magnetic resonance imaging data of the upper airway were collected from the aglossic speaker. Air-tissue boundaries were determined from the video sequences using a segmentation algorithm, and dynamics of vocal-tract constrictions and cross-dimensions were calculated. Results: The aglossic speaker produced the consonants /t, d, th, l ,r, f ,v, s, sh/ with a bilabial closure instead of a normal lingua-alveolar closure; however, in /t/and /d/ the overall vocal-tract configuration presented a cavity anterior to the constriction, which filtered transient and frication sources in a manner similar to normal alveolar production. Conclusion: The aglossic speaker, lacking a tongue apex, has developed a bilabial compensatory strategy to produce multiple consonants with her lips. This is for the simple reason that these works contradict each other at various points. The reason for such discrepancies should be sought in the historical and linguistic backgrounds of the two main centres of the south-western Karaim population, i.e. Lutsk and Halich. Even though these two centres were always in close communication with one another, and the language that was spoken in them originates beyond any doubt from one common root, they remained for centuries under slightly different linguistic influences as a result of the Slavonic languages surrounding them. The present paper aims to present and, where possible, clarify the differences which follow from the studies on the Karaim sound system we have at our disposal. An attempt is also made to identify some differences between the Lutsk and Halich subdialects of south-western Karaim, and explain their origin. Since the grammatical descriptions we are dealing with here and the written sources we are able to work with concern the end of the first half of the 19th century at the earliest, the time scale of our interest is limited to the second half of the 19th and the first four decades of the 20th century.

Vakulenko (State Science and Technical Library of Ukraine, Ukraine, [email protected]) Abstract: The acoustic and articulatory properties of Ukrainian consonant phones were investigated, and a full set of relevant IPA notations was proposed for these and compiled in a table. Acoustic correspondence of Ukrainian phones to those appearing in European languages was analyzed and discussed. Special attention was paid to the phonemes /v/ (represented in Cyrillic script as “/в/”) and /gh/ (ren- dered in Cyrillic script as “/г/”) that cause the most difficulties in their description. In particular, our experiments and observations suggest that a standard Ukrainian phoneme /v/ is realised as labiodental fricatives [v] and [vj] before vowels and also as sonorant bilabial approximants [β̞ β̞˛ β̞ɔ] between a vowel and a consonant, in the initial position before consonants and after a vowel at the end of a word, and sometimes is devoiced to [v̥ ] in the coda after a voiceless consonant. In some ut- terances after a vowel (before a consonant and in the coda), a strongly rounded bilabial approximant [β̞ɔ] may approach a non-syllabic semivowel [ṷ]. These con- clusions are in good agreement with the consonantal status of the Ukrainian lan- guage and with the general tendencies of sound combinations in the world lan- guages. The findings of this research contribute to better understanding of Ukrain- ian and its special features in comparison with other world languages that may have substantial practical use in various phonetic and translation studies, as well as in modern linguistic technologies aimed at artificial intelligence development, machine translation incorporating text-to-speech conversion, automatic speech analysis, recognition and synthesis, and in other areas of applied linguistics.

The results showed that all the bilabial consonants [p, b, m, ɸ,w] used in Japanese convey such images. In English, the consonants evoking the image of softness were bilabials but not labiodentals, and those linked to the image of cuteness were unaspirated, low-frequency bilabials. These results demonstrated the pluripotentiality of sound sym- bolism, meaning that a certain set of linguistic sounds evokes different meanings and images both within a single language and across languages (e.g. Winter et al. 2019; Kawahara and Kumagai to appear). Moreover, under the backcloth that the description of the glide /w/ concerning the place of articulation in Japanese and English is not uncontroversial, the current paper indicates – based on the current sound-symbolic experimental results – that the glide /w/ is phonologically labial in each language. The following modifications to the International Phonetic Alphabet will be adopted: /j/ for what is realized as voiced palato-alveolar affricate [ʤ]; /c/ for the voiceless palato-alveolar affricate [ʧ]; /cʼ/ for the palato-alveolar ejective affricate [tʃʼ]; /y/ for the palatal glide [j]; /h/ for the breathy-voiced glottal approximant [ɦ]; /sh/ for the palato-alveolar fricative [ʃ]. The alveolar fricative /s/ never clusters together with the glottal /h/, hence the orthographic convention /sh/ can only be interpreted as [ʃ]. The bilabial stop /p/ can be realized as [p] or [ɸ]. p [p] and f [ɸ] will be both used in surface-phonemic transcriptions, depending on the actual realization of the phoneme: a word like /payá/ ‘good’, can be written as payá or fayá . Similarly, the velar stop and the velar fricative will be written as k or x: /saká/ ‘tomorrow’ can be transcribed as either saká or saxá .

The present paper examines articulatory details of the production of multiple consonants by an aglossic speaker. Method: Real-time magnetic resonance imaging data of the upper airway were collected from the aglossic speaker. Air-tissue boundaries were determined from the video sequences using a segmentation algorithm, and dynamics of vocal-tract constrictions and cross-dimensions were calculated. Results: The aglossic speaker produced the consonants /t, d, th, l ,r, f ,v, s, sh/ with a bilabial closure instead of a normal lingua-alveolar closure; however, in /t/and /d/ the overall vocal-tract configuration presented a cavity anterior to the constriction, which filtered transient and frication sources in a manner similar to normal alveolar production.
