It probably would have won two more if four members of the cast hasn’t been in direct competition with one another: Davis and Baxter for Best Actress and Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress. The story is that the studio tried to get Baxter to go for Supporting but she refused because she already had one of those and wanted to move up. Mankiewicz” Christopher Damien Auretta A partir de um conto da autora (e actriz) Mary Caswell Orr (1910-2006) intitulado “The Wisdom of Eve” [A sabedoria de Eva], publicado em 1946, Mankiewicz refunde as linhas de força da narrativa, criando novas personagens, alterando nomes, explorando tensões psicológicas e transpondo para o ecrã todo um paradigma visual, verbal e analítico pertencente ao seu universo fílmico. Nesta transposição para o ecrã, Mankiewicz revela a sua própria sabedoria e mestria no tocante à realidade humana, i.e., na sua essencial tarefa existencial e incessante periclitância. Recorde-se que a palavra Eva provém do hebraico Hawwah , uma lexia que significa “o que está vivo” ou “fonte de vida” cuja inesgotável complexidade a arte fílmica, segundo Mankiewicz, deve projectar. A obra fílmica de Mankiewicz, na sua naturalidade teatral e teatral natureza, opera, no seu conjunto, precisamente onde a memória apreende a humana tentação de existir, o pathos de seres em contínua revisão interior e/ou em estado de rascunho terminal.
