1 Our Mission

Our Mission:

To provide a sustainable, community based junior hockey program supporting an environment where young men enjoy an overall positive life experience, achieve higher levels of education and participation through the game of hockey while inspiring an optimal level of respect for family, friends and community

2 Collingwood Admirals Name & Logo

The name and logo were integral steps in the process of bringing a community based junior hockey team to Collingwood . It is very important to the ownership group that we honor the history and heritage of the Town of Collingwood. The name has been chosen as a tribute to Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood

Logo Progression

Collingwood was incorporated as a town in 1858, nine years before Confederation, and was named after Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Lord Nelson's second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar, who assumed command of the British fleet after Nelson's death.

8 Why Collingwood ?

Why Collingwood ?

Collingwood and the town of Blue Mountain are …….

 Geographically located in the CENTRE of the largest population of registered hockey players in the country of Canada

 Hockey Canada reports that 36.4 % of the 635,000 registered hockey players reside in a 2–3 hour driving radius of Collingwood

 The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) have 231,002 boys, girls and adults registered on approximately 14,000 teams in Ontario

 Collingwood has a 50+ year history of participating in Junior Hockey on Ontario

9 Our Business Plan

Local Ownership - Local Players - Local Passion for the community Local Sponsorship - Local Partnerships

 Town of Collingwood is aligned with the placement of a Junior team  Support and interest from the town and community has been substantial  Pre-Season OHL Exhibition Game – Initiated and managed by this ownership group - was a tremendous success  Hometown Hockey – Collingwood – our group instigated the “call out” for Junior hockey in the area through Ron McLean  Business Association of downtown Collingwood – has pledged their support for a junior team  Collingwood Minor Hockey Association – Has partnered with (exhibition game) and supports our bid for Junior hockey  Business opportunity surrounding Junior team as the core operational entity  Professional, individual and team instruction – professionals, adults, boys and girls  Adult and Minor hockey tournaments – local teams will have the opportunity to increase competition levels  Professional Team Training Camps  Collingwood is a destination location unto itself and people want to be here!  A family based destination – one where people will travel to support hockey activities  Downhill Skiing / Cross country Skiing / Snow activities - Winter  Golf / Hiking / Boating / Swimming – Summer  Blue Mountain Village concept - Hotels / Restaurants/ Entertainment / Infrastructure in place  Through the game of hockey we will bring economic value to the community while enhancing local talent

10 Our Partnership Plan

 Collingwood Minor Hockey Association  Ability to utilize the “Admirals” logo and brand as a new image for the minor hockey association – if required  Development and mentorship of coaches / players and parents  In–game partnerships related to volunteers, 50 / 50 revenue sharing, concession revenue sharing etc.  Collingwood Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA)  Economic Impact of playing 25 home games in the downtown Eddie Bush Memorial Arena (see attached)  Sponsorship and in-game partnerships  Admirals (Founders) Club  Founding support group for the team – Season ticket holders  Individual sponsors who support & are active within the fundraising objective of sustaining the team’s operational costs  Tournaments / Instruction & Professional Hockey Development / Summer Programming  Based on ice availability – Our intention is to bring hockey and hockey development back to Collingwood  Local teams playing local tournaments, local players participating in local development camps, summer leagues & instruction  Sponsorship – Local Business Inclusion – In-arena sponsorship – In-Game Sponsorship  For a sustainable team to survive in Collingwood – Imperative that we partner with local business to drive interest in the team, and continue to build the economic development of the downtown core  September Exhibition Game – We activated some 30 sponsors to participate in a single event product – and sold out the event!

11 Our Partnership Plan

12 Why Junior “B” vs Junior “A”?

Junior “B” Hockey makes the most sense for the Town of Collingwood… because

 Junior B affords more local players the ability to aspire to and play junior hockey

 Junior B cost of entry provides a sustainable business model for long term success of the team

 Junior B league fees are substantially less thus reducing annual operating costs – up to $ 50,000 annually

 Junior B league mandates that Pay-to-Play Fees for players are a maximum of $ 3500 vs $ 7000 in Junior A

 Junior B team will not be “officially branded” to an OHL affiliate in a league where NCAA opportunities prevail

 Junior B regular season games are restricted to conference play only thus reducing all regular season game travel to an average of 2 hours or less

 Junior B provides ownership the opportunity to highlight the history and heritage of Collingwood within the team name – Collingwood Admirals – also providing Collingwood Minor Hockey a brand to move towards if required

 Junior B hockey is an integral and successful component of a 50 year history of Junior hockey in Collingwood

35 Collingwood Admirals Hockey Team Owners Letter to Collingwood Dear Collingwood,

It has been a long time since you have had the ability to cheer for your own junior hockey team. It has been our sole objective to provide you with a team for the past 2 years. Our group started coordinating its efforts shortly after your Junior C entry was lost due to an OHA appeal from Stayner. Your former mayor, Terry Geddes has been on a mission and we have spent many countless hours discussing the perfect structure and holistic hockey approach to bring a community based junior hockey team to the Town of Collingwood. Terry’s passion for the community, passion for the game of hockey and his requirement to do the right thing has fueled our resolve to meet and exceed our objective. We are almost there!

Over 1 year ago we initiated our research on various leagues and teams available for Collingwood. Based on several meetings with the town, it was evident junior hockey was a priority. Junior B had enjoyed past success and it was important that local players would have an opportunity to play. At the time the GOJHL (Junior B) was not interested in expanding. We researched other avenues, other leagues. In January, 2019 the GOJHL (Junior B) called and suddenly wanted to expand. They chose Collingwood ….. fortunately our group maintained communication and dialogue with GOJHL (Junior B) executives while performing our due diligence with the town, OHL partners and other leagues.

We shared our successes with the GOJHL; initiating an OHL exhibition game played at the Eddie Bush Memorial Arena in September. We shared how the town supported our ownership group for this game. We shared how we sold sponsorship packages to 30 different sponsors for a 1 night event. We shared how the community supported the game and sold out all seating and standing room - to the point there were hundreds of people were looking for available tickets. We shared how Collingwood Minor Hockey partnered with us on the night with a successful 50/50 draw….and how the town purchased a new score clock befitting of a junior hockey arena. Collingwood was ready for a junior team………The GOJHL was impressed.

We highlighted our ability to align with Ron McLean and Tara Sloan for Hometown Hockey to help bring Junior Hockey to the forefront on a national stage. Hometown Hockey helped initiate our website and ultimately started our season ticket drive to where we have over 110 people wanting season ticket packages for the first season of play. Multiple contacts have reached out to us as potential coach’s, players, sponsors and volunteers through this website.

Overall…we have final approval for a Junior B expansion team, we have confirmed an affiliation with the Owen Sound Attack in terms of team and player management, we have maintained our Collingwood identity and honored the towns history and heritage by naming the team the Collingwood Admirals……Collingwood will have a community based Junior B Hockey Team with local ownership and local support.

As your ownership group, we are proud and privileged to support Junior B hockey in our community. Congratulations Collingwood ! Andy Pritchard Paul Jeffrey Mark Thompson 36

2.Collingwood Colts in the Community

Having a Junior A Team in the City of Collingwood is much more than the product fans will come to see on the ice. It’s about involving the community in many ways in addition to attending games.

We will draw on the previous successes and practices that the OHL Barrie Colts have created and implemented in that community that have made the brand one of the most well known in the province. And we will draw on the success that has been enjoyed by Stayner Siskins in the community of Stayner.

Our plan will revolve around a number of key elements and partners:

● Collingwood Minor Hockey Development of Coaches and Players ● Schools in the Community ● Charitable and Community Causes ● Local and Regional Media ● Tourism Partners ● The City of Collingwood

Collingwood Minor Hockey Developing programs with Collingwood Minor Hockey will be an important part of the Collingwood Colts involvement in the community. Our will be to make every child playing in the minor hockey system feel like they are part of the team; that they too are “Collingwood Colts”. Our program will include:

● Team fundraising programs, which will help the teams and the league raise much needed funds ● Hosting skills learning programs – including hockey camps ● Working with organizations like “Jump Start” to give less fortunate kids the opportunity to play hockey ● Programs that help mentor minor hockey coaches ● Creating a development program so that local minor hockey players will have a chance to play their entire hockey careers in the area – from Atom right up to Junior A and the OHL

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 4

Minor Hockey Coach Mentoring One of the unique programs we will bring to Collingwood is a mentoring program for minor hockey coaches. Many coaches at this level are new to coaching and our program will help them develop the skills and programs they need in order to best coach their young players.

The program is a result of a direct action Hockey Canada and its member Branches have taken since the Coaching Association of Canada's evaluation of the NCCP in 1995 and the Molson on player development of 1999. Mentoring of coaches at all levels, and specifically minor hockey, is the key to the future growth of coaching in Collingwood.

The outcome is improved player development through the establishment of our Collingwood coach mentoring program.

Schools in the Community Our school program will be another important segment of our community program. Our program will follow the program developed by the Barrie Colts OHL team and includes the following elements:

● Helping schools raise much needed funds. The Barrie Colts program, now in it 6th season, has donated more that $500,000 to local schools to help with everything from funding playground and sporting equipment to music instruments and smart boards ● We will visit every elementary school in the community and host an assembly where Collingwood Colts players will talk to students about the importance of physical activity, eating right, team sports, learning and other topics ● Giving students who may not have the opportunity to see a high level hockey game the opportunity to do so

Charitable and Community Causes Being part of the community is not only important for charities and other community organizations … it’s important for our players. It’s important for them to learn to give back, to be able to speak in public and to be good people.

Through various programs we will help local charities raise funds and awareness. We will create programs similar to what we have in other communities including:

● Player visits to charitable events, hospitals, seniors homes, etc. ● Donating tickets and team merchandise to charitable events ● Making direct donations to charities in Collingwood ● Bringing people to games that do not have the means to attend ● Implement a year-round 50/50 draw that benefits the community

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 5

● Surprise events that will be part of the ‘Colts in the Community’ program ● Creating events like “Colt for a Day”, where kids get the opportunity to be on the team for a day and play games with members of the Collingwood Colts ● Group game night events and activities ● Skate with the team public skating ● Annual golf tournament raising funds for the community

These and many other initiatives will be an important part of our involvement in the community.

Local and Regional Media Having good relationships with local and regional media is an important element for a number of reasons. It helps promote the games and keeps fans interested and excited, it helps create ongoing awareness of the team and it brings attention and promotion of the community.

In addition to having the team covered by sports news and reporting, our program will have some key components including:

● Home games broadcast on Rogers Cable – It will also allow fans to watch games that are outside of the community or unable to attend every game. The broadcasts also help promote the City of Collingwood ● We will see a radio broadcast partner for the same reasons as above ● Internet streaming of the games is another component of the media landscape that will be exploring the feasibility of including ● Media partners will also important partners to help us create contests, giveaways and other fan involvement activities

Tourism Partners Tourism is an important part of having a Junior A team in your city. The team will offer visitors another activity while visiting and will also attract visitors to Collingwood who will ‘make a weekend out of it’ in planning a trip.

We will be working with the various tourism partners in the Collingwood area to help attract fans to attend games and to educate fans who have come from out of town about what there is to do and see in Collingwood. Hotels, restaurants, attractions and the cities tourism department will all be partners we will be reaching out to.

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 6

The City of Collingwood Our most important partner in the Collingwood Colts will be The City of Collingwood.

We don’t need to sell you on why having a Junior Hockey team in the Eddie Bush Arena is good for the city. What we do need to sell you on is that we are the right partner to do it and that a Junior A team is the right league to bring to Collingwood.

The league our team will be participating in is a national league with a high profile at the national level. Winning a championship at this level will bring awareness to the City of Collingwood across the country, including lots of national media exposure.

The Collingwood Colts will only be a long-term success if we have a mutually beneficial relationship with The City of Collingwood.

Our goal is to not just be there for the first 5 or 10-year term. Our goal is for the Collingwood th th th Colts to be there to celebrate the 10 , 15 , 20th, and 25 anniversaries and beyond. Our management team and owners know what it takes to be in a successful long-term th relationship with a municipality. The OHL Barrie Colts will be celebrating their 25 anniversary next year. We understand not only what a team needs to be a success, but what a community needs as well.

3. Hockey and Business Operations

Why do we want to bring a Junior A team to Collingwood? The answer is because for us, it makes good hockey sense and good business sense. Our ownership group is very unique when it comes to our motivation. No other group will have the same interest as our group.

For us, having a Junior A team in Collingwood gives us the opportunity to develop players in a complete system. It gives us the ability to recruit players and keep them in our organization right up until they sign pro level contracts.

We already have systems in place. We have scouts, we have trainers, we have coaches, we have business operations, we have the front office and the team experience.

Our group has run a successful OHL team for 14 seasons. Our team has run a successful Junior C team for 6 seasons. We know the Ontario Hockey Association and we know the business of sports & entertainment.

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 7

You read earlier about the experience of David Steele, Jason Ford, , Todd Miller and Billy Smith regarding hockey operations and you will read about Russell Urbanoski, Howie Campbell and Jim Payetta’s hockey and business experience in the next section. But we also want to point to the other members of our organization who bring valuable expertise and experience to the table in our operation of the Collingwood Colts.

We have professionals in the areas of game day operations, social media, public and media relations, front office administration, ticket sales, sponsorship and promotions, food and beverage operations, and merchandise marketing and sales.

No other Junior team in the province will have access to the level of expertise and professionals that we have.

As well, our group has operated a number businesses successfully as you will see in the following bios.

We know how to make businesses work and we know how to make hockey teams work.

And WE WANT TO WIN AN RBC CUP FOR COLLINGWOOD! Having a successful Junior A franchise will help us win not only with the Collingwood Colts, but with our other teams as well. We can share player development techniques and recruitment, scouting, coaching systems, even equipment and nutrition programs with the local Junior C teams that David Steele already has a good relationship with.

4. Management and Owners

The members of our ownership and management team are:

● Russell Urbanoski ● David Steele ● Christina Steele ● Howie Campbell ● Jim Payetta

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 8

Russell Urbanoski Russell Urbanoski is the president and founder of Nutrafarms Inc. who works with local farmers in assisting the community to readily attain drug-free meat products.

After spending nearly two decades sourcing and supplying the highest quality in natural food to families across Ontario, Russell maintains the belief that offering a niche market with a growing consumer base to local farmers, and one in which they can fairly compete is essential to the surging success of community growers and consumers, alike.

Russell’s involvement within Southern Georgian Bay is prevalent in everyday business dealings through his connections to the farmers who live there and the people of the towns who consume the product. Collingwood in particular has been a continuous area of involvement in the Nutrafarms program, with its main beef farm located in the Collingwood Hills.

Nutrafarms now heads into its fourth year as the main sponsor for the Stayner Siskins Junior A Hockey Team. The importance of quality nutrition sourced in its athlete’s own backyards, makes the partnership a perfect fit and sits well within Russell’s personal appreciation for hockey. Community ties in any fashion support the core values that both Russell and the Nutrafarms brand stand behind.

Some of Russell’s fondest memories as a father to his children were in their younger days, on the ice at the rink. He finds great value in youth having access to sports not only in their own participation, but also in the access to older, more developed and role-model type athletes. Community hockey is an essential in a town for it’s a ability to endorse connections, common ground, active lifestyles and provide a healthy outlet for children to thrive and grown within.

Russell finds himself looking for increasing opportunities to foster and grow this kind of environment and mindset within communities such as those in Southern Georgian Bay, whether that be through sponsorship, getting schools involved, or working with local Minor Hockey Teams more directly.

David Steele David Steele has worked with Russell Urbanoski since 2002 and has built 2 successful companies that support agriculture in the greater Collingwood rural areas.

David currently works as the Vice President of Operations for Nutrafarms Inc. and is President of Georgian Bay Meat Packers Inc.

5. Financial Requirements

The start up of the company was completed solely on private investment from the Ownership and Management Team listed above. Our group has the demonstrated financial stability to endure any years that may suffer financially.

A Junior A team in Collingwood, owned and managed by our group, will be not only a long term success in the community, but will be a model for a new system of hockey and player development in the country.

6. Economic Impact

There is a direct economic impact to The City of Collingwood from having a Junior A team.

There has not been a formal study conducted by any Junior A or OHL team or by the league on the economic impact a junior team has on the cities in which they reside.

However, a formal study was completed in 2011 for the ’s Kelowna Rockets (a CHL Junior league team). The study was conducted by professor Kenneth I. Carlaw of the University of British Columbia. Tourism Research Institute and STEAM (Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model) was used to quantify the impact of the junior team.

The year studied was the 2009/2010 season. The findings showed that the total economic impact attributable to the Kelowna Rockets to be $31.5 million per year.

Consider the following facts:

● As per the study referred to above, the Junior A team in Collingwood would have a direct economic impact to the City of Collingwood of approx. $7.75 million per year (using results from WHL study on Kelowna Rockets. Kelowna has a population of just over 100,000 and a seating capacity of 6,000 seats. The City of Collingwood population and the seating capacity is approx ¼ of that size) ● The study considered revenues from the amount spent on hotels, restaurants, local suppliers, retail shopping, travel costs, jobs, etc. ● Hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in media value from television and radio broadcasts would be generated ● Part-time jobs for Collingwood residents will be offered

COLLINGWOOD COLTS TIER II JR A - BUSINESS OVERVIEW PAGE / 14

● The Barrie Colts contribute over $250,000 per year back to local charities though the 50/50 draws and various fundraising activities, including over $500,000 that has gone directly to local schools over the last 6 years. The Collingwood Colts will be following the same programs. We anticipate having a significant impact on local schools and charitable groups ● We will be using local suppliers for 90% of required equipment and operational expenses

Minor Hockey Coach and Player Development Mentorship Program

The purpose of this program is a result of direct action Hockey Canada and its member Branches have taken since the Coaching Association of Canada's evaluation of the NCCP in 1995 and the Molson Open Ice Summit on player development of 1999. Mentoring of coaches at all levels and specifically minor hockey is the key to the future growth of coaching in Collingwood. The ultimate outcome is improved player development through the establishment of a Collingwood coach mentoring program. Mission:

Collingwood Colts is dedicated to coach development within its grassroots programs; Timbits Blackhawk, Lightening through Midget. We believe that coach development will have positive impacts on our players, and coaches both on and off the ice. How do we get started?

1. Create a system of mentor/master coach for every minor hockey association. One master (David Steele Collingwood Colts) for boys and girls minor hockey teams. Ensure that coaches are trained to reward and encourage a child’s use of creativity and imagination while practicing and playing. Attend Minor Hockey meetings for both Blackhawks and Lightening to establish a baseline of coaching knowledge with each levels coaches.

2. Review Certification requirements and recommend OMHA and Hockey Canada required certifications. Support the completion of all mandatory and volunteer requirements regarding certifications. (eg. Respect in Sport, Gender Identity Information, along with Community Sport Coach Level 1 Intro to Hockey Coach and Level 2 Coach Level.)

Provide a one day orientation including on ice and off ice preparation at the expense of the Collingwood Colts Junior A Club. The workshop has two components. One component consists of an outline of how to plan, schedule and communicate efficiently with the parents and players of your team, and the other is a combination of both on and off ice instruction going through simple but common issues while running a practice. This instruction is open to all Collingwood boys and girls minor hockey coaches, assistants, team managers and parents that are interested or want to get involved in coaching.

Provide a one day open development camp, open to all minor hockey boys and girls registered or previously registered to Collingwood Minor hockey where we will have Dale Hawerchuk and Todd Miller as well as the Collingwood Colts Junior A coaches running 8 hours of development practices. These will be “free” to the parents and players of Collingwood minor Hockey.
