Excellency, I am deeply saddened to leani of the untimely demise of Dr. Lee Jong-wook1.Director-GeneraLpf_&.e Wprid_HealtfL.Qrgmi2ation. Among his many laudable achievements and contributions, Dr. Lee played a key role in the global fight against SARS and the avian flu, as well as in addressing the scourge of HIV/AIDS, for which we in Asia owe him a particular debt of gratitude. Dr. Lee was also known for his dedication and professionalism in helping peoples worldwide attain the highest possible level of health. Hia passing away is indeed a great loss to all of us. He leaves behind a lasting legacy for which he will be long remembered.

On behalf of the Government and people of , I wish to express my heartfelt condolences and support to the bereaved family and his friends and colleagues at the World Health Organization and the entire UN system during this time of grief.

I have learnt with sorrow of the untimely demise of Dr. Lee Jong-wook. Directw-Gcaeral of the World Health Orgaruzatjon. At this moment of grief, I wish to express fo~you and, through you,'the condolences and sympathies of the Royal Thai Government to the bereaved family and the officers of the WHO.

Dr. Lee led the World Health Organization with vigour and leadership. He played a pivotal role in the fight against HIV/AIDS and was at the forefront of tackling avian influenza and other pandemics. He will be missed by the UN system and the international community. His noble services to public health and devotion to the cause of humanity would continue to inspire future generations. Accept, Excellency, the renewed assurances of my highest consideration.
