“Islander 50” Hailed as a Great Success

After much preparation, planning and re-planning and concerns as to how BNAPS would be able to finance “Islander 50”, the weekend of 13/14 June proved to be exceptionally successful and did all and more of what was expected as a memorable tribute to the remarkable achievements of John Britten and Desmond Norman, their classic BN-2 Islander and to commemorate its historic first flight on 13 June, 1965 at Airport.

Simon Islander’s first flight, those present witnessed a flypast by three BN-2 aircraft courtesy of B- N Group. This was followed by a re -enactment of the first flight by George Cormack in his Islander G -BUBP that he had brought down from his base at Cumbernauld in Scotland especially for “Islander 50”. Thanks George for this and all you have done for BNAPS. The re-enactment flight was superb finishing with the high speed downwind pass that captured all the sights and sound of the BN-2 Islander’s “magic” – an unforgettable experience. News Just In BNAPS Trustees are delighted to announce that Alex Norman has kindly accepted an invitation to be a Patron of the Britten-Norman Aircraft Preservation Society Trust as from 23 July, 2015.

“Islander 50” 13-21 June, 2015

“Islander 50” was officially opened at 1200 on the 13 June by Major General Martin White CBE CB JP, HM Lord Lieutenant of the . Also present at the opening ceremony were Ron Holland, the Isle of Wight High Sheriff, and members of the Norman family. Also present. was Rev. Linda Bushell who conducted the dedication of a commemorative plaque that had been unveiled by HM Lord Lieutenant. “Islander 50” opening ceremony – from right to left Major General Martin White CB CBE JP, HM Lord Lieutenant of the IoW, Rev. Linda Bushell, BNAPS Chairman, Bob Wealthy, Alex Norman, two young Norman family members, Roddy Norman, Henry Norman and Ron Holland, IoW High Sheriff.

The commemorative plaque for the Islander’s th first flight 50 after it was unveiled. It will be found a longer term location at the Propeller Inn in due course.

Next the focus of attention moved to the fuselage of Islander G-AVCN. BNAPS Chairman, Bob Wealthy, introduced the proceedings and invited the Isle of Wight High Sheriff, Ron Holland, to say a few words, Ann Medley gave a speech as a tribute to her late father Peter Ward and recounted his interest and career in aviation. Bob Wilson, BNAPS Trustee and restoration team leader, then invited Ann to remove the B-N flag draped over the fuselage nose to formally declare Islander G-AVCN open for public viewing. Bob Wilson introduced Ann Medley who then declared the fuselage of Islander G-AVCN open for public viewing at “Islander 50”.

Ivan Berryman pulled out all the stops with his original paintings and signed prints at “Islander 50”. Here Alex Norman is about to sign one of the prints of the “First of the Many” painting that Ivan had produced especially for “Islander 50”.

Ivan Berryman had undertaken a commission for Tony Austin to depict the occasion in October 1965 when Tony made a parachute jump from the prototype Islander G-ATCT. The painting is titled “First Man Out” and here Tony is signing one of the prints.

Allan Wright(right), one of the founders of BN Historians and a member of the team that recovered Islander G-AVCN from Puerto Rico back in 2000, met up with BNAPS Chairman, Bob Wealthy, at “Islander 50”.

BN Historians has provided unstinting help in making “Islander 50” happen as well as invaluable support for the restoration work of G-AVCN.

BNAPS member Rita Edgcumbe ran the busy sales stand at “Islander 50”. With an array of merchandise on show, including several items produced specifically for “Islander 50”, sales were brisk and made a valuable contribution to BNAPS’ fund raising efforts.

A varied selection of B-N Islander, Defender and Trislander aircraft models was on show at “Islander 50”. One of the models was a “new build” Islander - an electric powered radio control Islander model given the registration G-BNAP. Friend of BNAPS, Tony Baker, had kindly constructed this model for “Islander 50”. It is all ready to go and is just waiting for the right weather conditions before it makes its maiden flight.

During his time in the Middle East Major General Martin White was flown in the Army Air Corps BN-2T Islander AL1s piloted by George Bacon and had brought along photographic evidence to prove it. Bob Wilson (left) took a great interest in this as he was responsible for the team at B-N that carried out urgent work for the MoD to get the Army Air Corps Defenders ready for deployment during the first Gulf War in 1991.

BNAPS Chairman, Bob Wealthy, met up with BNAPS Supporter Berend Weerda (right) who had made the journey from Belgium to be at “Islander 50”. Berend became involved with BNAPS through research into the life of his grandfather, Albert Weerda, who was the prospective B-N German Sales Agent in 1966. Albert sadly lost his life when the prototype Islander, G-ATCT, crashed in the Netherlands on 9 November, 1966.

Chris Unitt came over from Guernsey for “Islander 50”. When Chris was a pilot with Aurigny Air Services in the late 1960s and early 1970s he flew G- AVCN for some 6 or 7 years. Islander 50 Flypast and First Flight Re-enactment Aircraft

Islander G-BEXJ, currently with the Channel Islands Air Search organisation based in Guernsey,

represented the piston engine powered version of the Islander in the B-N Group fly past.

G -GMPB represented the latest BN-2 variant,

the BN-2T-4S Defender. This aircraft is fully equipped for surveillance missions and was originally delivered to the

Manchester Police Authority. (Photo Alan Saunders)

G-JSAT was the third aircraft in the

flypast as an example of the popular BN- 2T Turbine Islander variant. This aircraft had been given a new colour scheme for th BN Group’s Islander 50 celebrations. (Photo Alan Saunders)

The high spot for “Islander 50” on 13 June was the first flight re-

enactment conducted by George Cormack in Cormack Islander Aircraft’s Islander G-BUBP. This

aircraft had been flown down by George from his base in

Cumbernauld earlier in the day. After a spirited take off the flight ended with an impressive

downwind flypast at high speed and ended with a perfect Islander short landing despite the blustery conditions – thank you George you made the day.

Prototype and Production Norman Aeroplane Company

Freelance Aircraft Make an Appearance at “Islander 50”

Another aspect of the “Britten-Norman Story” was on show at “Islander 50” in the form of the prototype Norman Aeroplane Company Freelance, G-NACI, and the only example of a production Freelance, G-NACA. making a rare joint public appearance. The Freelance’s origins can be traced back to another of B-N’s innovative designs, the BN-3 Nymph that was first flown from Bembridge Airport on 17 May, 1969.

BNAPS was pleased to welcome the arrival of Alex Norman in the Norman Aeroplane Company

Freelance, G-NACA, the only production aircraft built. G-NACA is jointly owned by Alex

Norman and Patrick Caruth. Many thanks go to Alex and Patrick for

bringing their aircraft to “Islander 50” to represent another facet of the “Britten-Norman Story” for

“Islander 50”.

Freelance prototype, G-NACI, is

seen here on arrival from Airport piloted by Jim Birnie. Jim’s father was the chief pilot for B-N

from the early days and flew Islander prototype G-ATCT during

its test campaign. He also flew the BN-3 Nymph prototype, G-AXFB, during its flight testing and

certification trials. G-NACA is now owned by Andrew Kinnaird and is based at Sandown

Airport.

Another first flight that took place at Bembridge Airport was

More Scenes from “Islander 50” - Restored Military Vehicles and IoW Music Group Revival

Thanks go to Simon Thomson for organising the display of restored military vehicles that

added to the scene at “Islander 50”.

All four members of the 1970s music group “Pseudo Foot”

participated in “Islander 50” to re-create the image of the group with a B-N Islander that was on

the front cover of their LP, “Islanders”. The original

photograph was taken by Brian Bradbury who was helped by his young assistant Ivan Berryman.

Thanks go to Brian Bradbury for coming along to photograph the “Pseudo Foot” group members in the re- group again, this time in front of

creation of the 1970s LP cover image are, left Islander G-AVCN. to right, John Freeman, Ann Cave , Martin Cave and John Howarth.

To round off a memorable day the group had dusted off their

amps and musical gear and played a selection of numbers

from their 1970s repertoire. Thanks go to the group for entering into the spirit of

On the weekend of 20/21 June, Philip Jewell (centre left) brought

along his Saunders-Roe memorabilia collection. Saunders-Roe had strong connections with B-N during the

early years as many ex employees were recruited. Later from 1968 –

On Tuesday 16 June, BNAPS presented a talk “BN-2 Islander – 50 Years On” at a

special meeting of the Isle of Wight Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society at the IoW College, Newport as part of “Islander 50 week. The talk was well received and was followed by a selection of archive film clips featuring Britten-Norman and the Islander.

Acknowledgements - Whilst it is difficult and possibly often unfair to single out individuals for their contribution to the success of any event, on balance it is felt that

for “Islander 50” the efforts of the following people should be given due recognition: Keith Winter - for providing an all night vigil as additional security cover while VCN was at the airport;

Peter Gatrell - who was always willing to lend a hand and on one of his daily checks during the week called in the necessary help to sort out the marquee that was suffering in the high winds that day;

John Kenyon - for fielding all the difficult negotiations for car parking, safety and supporting services together with providing an excellent commentary on the 13th;

Ivan Berryman – for kindly donating the “First of the Many” painting and other original paintings to raise funds for BNAPS: Helen Blake and the team at the Propeller Inn

George Cormack – for making the long flight down from Scotland with his Islander th and undertaking the re-enactment of the prototype Islander’s first flight on its 50 anniversary.

Islander 50 Event Post Script – B-N Islander G-BUBP Liveries

In December 2014, G-BUBP adopted

another, temporary, colour scheme for its role in the new James Bond film,

With the wter based SPECTRE paint scheme removed, G-BUBP made the first flight re-

enactment at “Islander 50”. It was then ferried down to Hurn Airport where Airtime

Aviation’s paint shop got to work and by

Transport Trust Awards Ceremony – Brooklands Museum, 8 June, 2015.

BNAPS attended the Transport Trust

Restoration Awards presentation at Brooklands Museum on 8 June, 2015. In

recognition of the high quality of the restoration work undertaken by BNAPS for Islander G-AVCN, this had resulted in the Trust being given the Ron Wilsden award.

The award certificate was presented by HRH

Prince Michael of Kent. BNAPS Trust Chairman, Bob Wealthy, accepted the certificate on behalf of the society. BNAPS Trustee, Peter Graham, also attended the

awards ceremony as a guest which was very appropriate as Peter’s company, Airstream International, funded the recovery of G-AVCN from Puerto Rico in (Photo courtesy of the Transport Trust) 2000.

Over this period work has continued on the fabrication of interior trim and seating. The pilot’s seat has been stripped down and re-painted and new upholstery is being made. Some minor electrical snags have been cleared on the instrument panel and the rudder trim control has been re-rigged. Whilst there is still work to do to complete the fuselage much of the effort has now transferred to the massive task of restoring the wing which is badly corroded and damaged. Fitting of the new fin leading edge is also in work. The fuselage was prepared for the move to Bembridge Airport to be part of “Islander 50”. One of the re-furbished passenger seats was installed in place of the pilot’s seat as a temporary arrangement for the purposes of having the fuselage on show at “Islander 50”. The wheeled support frame made the job of moving the fuselage out of the workshop remarkably straightforward. Thanks to all hands that turned out on Friday 12 June and Monday 15 June when the fuselage was transported by Kingswell Haulage to and from Bembridge Airport. Unloading at the airport went exceptionally well and the fuselage was quickly in place in the exhibition marquee. Tribute was paid by all concerned to the professionalism and skill of Rob Kingswell and his team, VCN could not have been in safer hands.

The fuselage was re-loaded and returned safely on Monday 15 June but was stored temporarily in a building adjacent to the workshop. It was decided that this gave an opportunity to re-arrange the space inside the workshop to facilitate continuing work on wing refurbishment and repair by moving the wing into the space previously occupied by the fuselage. On Thursday 18 June the fuselage was moved back into the workshop nose first and positioned to allow access from the port side doors for continuing work on the trim and installation of the seating and for access to enable the windscreens to be re-fitted. Once the windscreens have been re-fitted completion of the fuselage paint scheme can take place (addition of the red and black stripes) plus the fitting of the Registration Letters to the rear fuselage.

was taken to re- arrange the workshop to provide easier

access to the wing for the continuing

refurbishment and repair work. The wing was moved over to one

side and the fuselage positioned nose in with access to the interior

via the port side doors.

The pilot’s seat frame has been refurbished by Andy Stewart. Patrick

Gallagher has made the plywood supports for the seat cushions and

back rests and the seat is now with specialist yacht and car upholsterer Jon Olney for new foam padding and

covers to be fitted. Two of the four passenger bench seats have been refurbished, one by

Andy Stewart, which was fitted in place for “Islander 50”, and the

second passenger seat was refurbished by Roger Young.

Keith Winter has

made good progress with fitting a new leading edge to the

fin.

Charles Shiveral is

The team has made good progress and around 80% of the

upper and lower wing surfaces has been

de-corroded and old paint removed.

With Phase 1 of the restoration programme in sight of completion, the next period will see priority directed to Phase 2 activities. Phase 2 is geared to the completion of all repair and refurbishment work involving the wing, tail plane ailerons, flaps, elevator, rudder, fin, landing gear, engine cowlings and fairings to the stage when these items are painted and ready for final assembly in Phase 3.

News of Cylinders Needed for “Non-functional” Lycoming O-540 Engines-

Thanks go to David O’Byrne for tracking down another cylinder that was held by the Sam Pallot Transport Museum on Jersey. Also thanks to Sam Pallot for kindly donating the cylinder to BNAPS. The cylinder was brought over to the mainland in the Air Search Islander G-BEXJ, More thanks go to Dave Obyrne, Colin Ferbache and Chris Unitt for organising the shipment on Islander G-BEXJ when it came over for Islander 50 and to B-N Defence at Daedalus Airfield for looking after the cylinder for BNAPS until it could be collected.

Five more cylinders are still needed for the second of the “non-functional” Lycoming O- 540 engines. The cylinders are used on O-360 and O-540 engines, cylinder part number and other details to assist identification are as follows:

“The assembly part number required is 05K21102, this is termed a “narrow deck” type and is identified with a cylinder head/barrel part no of LW 12425, there are other older cylinder head/barrel part numbers that will do the job listed in the following link http://www.eci.aero/pdf/crm08.pdf. Use the ECI cyl class no 10 as reference.”

Trislander G-JOEY’s Last Passenger Flight 28 June, 2015

It was the end of an era when Aurigny Air Services Trislander G- JOEY, c/n 1016, made its last passenger carrying flight on 28 June, 2015. Upon arriving at Southampton and when it departed for Alderney it received the traditional fire tender salute. Built in 1975, and part of Aurigny Air Services fleet since 1981, G-JOEY has amassed over 30,000 flying hours and more than 90,000 flight cycles of operation.

G-JOEY taxis out to make its last take off from Southampton Airport in the early evening of 28 June, 2015. After an exceptional service record the much loved G-JOEY now faces an uncertain future. Meanwhile services to Alderney will be operated into 2016 by the remaining Aurigny Air Services Trislanders G-BDTO, c/n 1027, and G-RLON, c/n 1008, alongside the replacement Dornier 228s.

Vanuatu’s Unity Airlines Trislander YJ0019 In the Air Again

Meanwhile on the other side of the world, in the remote Pacific islands of Vanuatu, Unity Airlines Trislander YJ0019, c/n 1055, has just emerged after a major overhaul. Thanks to Tony Deamer for sending these photos of the Trislander during the engine ground run and on the right the welcome sight of YJ0019 returning to the air.

New Build BN-2B Islander G-CIGM in FLN Livery

The latest new build BN-2B Islander, G-CIGM, c/n 2312, seen here on a test flight at Daedalus Airfield, Lee-on-the-Solent, has been painted in the livery of the German operator FLN.

Once formal delivery acceptance is completed it will soon join other the other Islanders in the FLN fleet to operate services to the Frisian Islands. (Photo Richard Davies)

Headcorn Based Islander G-AXUB Gets a New Paint Scheme

Headcorn Parachute Club’s long serving Islander, G-AXUB, c/n 121, has recently been given an overhaul and re-paint. First flown in 1969 and acquired by the club in 1981, G-AXUB looks good for another 46 years of service?

Islander I-LACO Now in Florida

The fate of Islander I –LACO, c/n 17, has been a subject of some interest, not only because of its age but also the fact that it was originally part of Aurigny Air Services fleet as G-AWBY.
