Parade of Pride (Reflections on the Long Island Columbus Day Parade)

Today, we celebrate the Italian explorer, first to arrive in the New World. Today, we celebrate our Italian history. A gateway opened by vessels of voyage for steamships to cross in waves of migration, ancestral voices greeted by the Statue of Liberty. We are the . . . mindful to move forward onto unfamiliar soil to build a foundation of brick and mortar. We are the Italian Americans . . . mindful to overcome social injustice and poverty to cultivate an independent existence for our families. We march, today, to celebrate Christopher Columbus And the achievements of an Italian Entertainer, a Meteorologist, our New York State OSIA President and a costumed Columbus – leader of Social Justice. We march, today, to celebrate ourselves.

Accenting the Positive - World War II Italian Americans By Salvatore LaGumina, Ph.D. or more than half a century I have devoted my professional career to researching, teaching and writing about the Italian American experience, striving to emphasize Fthe positive. This pro-active approach allows me to concentrate on its immense contributions to our American way of life. Recently I have studied and written on the role of Italian Americans in the OSS (The Office of Strategic Services, predecessor of the CIA) which came to fruition dur - ing the Second World War. Primarily concentrating in acquiring vital and valuable in - telligence about Nazi and Fascist military activity, the OSS sought out recent immigrants from various countries who possessed substantial knowledge about lan - guage, dialects and customs about countries under Nazi and Fascist control. Cuneo attended Columbia University where he became a star football player. After playing professional football, Cuneo received a law degree from St. John’s University, became secretary to Congressman Fiorello H. LaGuardia, and also became an important journalist. President Roosevelt designated Cuneo to be his personal OSS liaison to Great Britain. In the course of this activity, on one occasion Cuneo had a memorable middle-of-the night meeting with Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill A third name is that of Albert R. Materazzi, the son of Italian immigrants from Tus - cany who settled in Hershey, Pennsylvania. His educational background included a degree in chemistry from Fordham University and an advanced degree in chemistry from the University of Rome in 1938. He volunteered for the service with the outbreak of war and was assigned to the Fifteenth Army headquarters. Known as the “brain,” Materazzi planned and participated in many of the behind-the-lines OSS missions. But the name that should be better-known is that of Biagio Massimo (Max) Corvo.
