The total period of all these four yugas constitute about 4.32 million years, which are distributed at a ratio of 4:3:2:1 among • Krutha yuga (about 10,000 Plus years ago), • Thretha yuga( 8,000 years ago) , • Dwapara yuga (5,000 years ago) and • Kali Yuga. 30 REFERENCES • The temple is ancient and its antecedents can be traced to Krutha Yuga, as mentioned in the Padma Purana. • In the temple's current location, originally stood a mountain called Swethagiri. the white mountain. • Veda Vyasa devoted 30 chapters of the holy text “ Padma Purana” to Swethagiri Mahathyam, where he described the significance of Sri Kurma. 31 SRI KURMAM TEMPLE 32 ORIGINS • As Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Lord Kurma to bless a king who was His devotee, Lord Brahma Himself came down to consecrate the temple. • Lord Brahma installed the idol in Santana Gopala Yantra, while the rest of the Gods helped in the construction of the temple. • Further, the deity of Sri Kurma in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is (not man-made but) self-manifest or swayambhu. 33 LONG LIST OF ILLUSTRIOUS VISITORS • In the Thretha Yuga, Lord Sri Rama's children Lava and Kusa visited this temple and offered their prayers. • In the Dwapara Yuga. Yadava King Balarama visited and performed Panchamrutha abishekam to help rid of shani doshas. • In the Kali Yuga, Saint Shankara Charya, visited the temple in the 6 th century AD and offered the Sudarshana Saligrama, which still can be found in the temple • Sri Ramanujacharya, the proponent of Visishta Advaita visited the temple later in the 12 th century • In the l3th century, Sri Narahari Theertha Swamy, belonging to the Madhva Sampradaya visited the temple. • The main temple was said to have been renovated and improved in the 2nd century by the king Ananga Chola Ganga Varma. The present temple is at least 700 years old. 34 SRI KURMAM TEMPLE 35 VERY ANCIENT TEMPLE • Survived thousands of years • “Endured” through years • Because it embodies two qualities: • Satva and Dharma 36 SACRED ASPECTS • There are eight holy temples (theerthams) along the circumference within a radius of 10 km, with the Sri Kurma temple as the epi- centre. • The eight temples signify the holy Aashta kshari Manthra (Om Namo Narayanaya) and are respectively 1) Narada theertham, 2) Sudha- gundam, 3) Chakra theertham, 4) Madhava dhara, 5) Koutilya theertham, 6) Narasimha theertham, 7) Vakra theertham and 8) Maha-dadhi theertham. 37 TEMPLE ARCHITECTURE • The main deity consists of two stones, about two feet long, coming out from the ground. These represent the head and body of Sri Kurma. The deity is in the form of a spherical shape and was worshipped as a Shiva Linga for a very long time. • It was Sri Ramanuja Acharya (1017-1137 AD) who revealed the true identity of the idol. Upon Ramanuja's prayers to the Lord, the deity, in the very presence of all assembled devotees, turned its face from the east to west. • Hence another Dhwaja Sthamba (the holy temple-tower) was erected on the west, facing the sanctum sanctorum, in addition to the original Dwaaja Sthamba that was standing on the east. • It is a very unique feature of the temple that God's deity is facing west and there exist two standing Dhwaja Sthamba . 38 TEMPLE UNIQUENESS • Sri Ramanuja was also responsible for the excavation of the beautiful idols of Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, after these Gods appeared in his dream with instructions to unearth them. • These idols are imbued with divine beauty and are preserved to this day in the sanctum-sanctorum of the temple. • There are altogether 108 pillars within the temple around the sanctum sanctorum. The scriptures sculpted on the walls of the temple are in four languages viz. Sanskrit, Pali, Kannada and Oriya, which explain the significance and history of the temple. 39 TUNNEL TO KASI • Also there exists a secret door safeguarding an underground tunnel (soranga marga) in the temple corridor that is said to lead to the holy town of Kasi on the banks of Ganges; the kings in the past are believed to have used this tunnel to travel to Kasi.

SACRED SPACES AND OBJECTS: THE VISUAL, MATERIAL, AND TANGIBLE George Pati BRAUER MUSEUM OF ART | APRIL 13 — MAY 8, 2016 WE AT THE BRAUER MUSEUM are grateful for the opportunity to present this exhibition curated by George Pati, Ph.D., Surjit S. Patheja Chair in World Religions and Ethics and Valparaiso University associate professor of theology and international studies. Through this exhibition, Professor Pati shares the fruits of his research conducted during his recent sabbatical and in addition provides valuable insights into sacred objects, sites, and practices in India. Professor Pati’s photographs document specific places but also reflect a creative eye at work; as an artist, his documents are also celebrations of the particular spaces that inspire him and capture his imagination. Accompanying the images in the exhibition are beautiful textiles and objects of metalware that transform the gallery into its own sacred space, with respectful and reverent viewing becoming its own ritual that could lead to a fuller understanding of the concepts Pati brings to our attention. Professor Pati and the Brauer staff wish to thank the Surjit S. Patheja Chair in World Religions and Ethics and the Partners for the Brauer Museum of Art for support of this exhibition. In addition, we wish to thank Gretchen Buggeln and David Morgan for the insights and perspectives they provide in their responses to Pati's essay and photographs. • Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya Connected to the Madhva Line?
Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? – Jagadananda Das – The relationship of the Madhva-sampradaya to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas is one that has been sensitive for more than 200 years. Not only did it rear its head in the time of Baladeva Vidyabhushan, when the legitimacy of the Gaudiyas was challenged in Jaipur, but repeatedly since then. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote in his 1892 work Mahaprabhura siksha that those who reject this connection are “the greatest enemies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya’s family of followers.” In subsequent years, nearly every scholar of Bengal Vaishnavism has cast his doubts on this connection including S. K. De, Surendranath Dasgupta, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, Friedhelm Hardy and others. The degree to which these various authors reject this connection is different. According to Gaudiya tradition, Madhavendra Puri appeared in the 14th century. He was a guru of the Brahma or Madhva-sampradaya, one of the four (Brahma, Sri, Rudra and Sanaka) legitimate Vaishnava lineages of the Kali Yuga. Madhavendra’s disciple Isvara Puri took Sri Krishna Chaitanya as his disciple. The followers of Sri Chaitanya are thus members of the Madhva line. The authoritative sources for this identification with the Madhva lineage are principally four: Kavi Karnapura’s Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (1576), the writings of Gopala Guru Goswami from around the same time, Baladeva’s Prameya-ratnavali from the late 18th century, and anothe late 18th century work, Narahari’s

In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land." PURPORT This is the sublime mission of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Many people come and inquire whether they have to give up family life to join the Society, but that is not our mission. One can remain comfortably in his residence. We simply request everyone to chant the maha-mantra: Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. If one is a little literate and can read Bhagavad-gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam, that is so much the better. These works are now available in an English translation and are done very authoritatively to appeal to all classes of men. This book contains well over a hundred edifying parables of our Acharyal compiled by a disciple and grouped over 97 heads. The sources of the parables are Acharyal’s benedictory addresses and His private conversations with the disciple. Following are the minor liberties that have been taken in the preparation of the text: 1. Parables narrated by Acharyal in more than one benedictory address have been grouped under a single head. 2. In rare cases, names have been given to the characters of a story even when Acharyal did not do so during His talk with the disciple. 3. Where Acharyal has narrated more than one version of a story, information from all the versions have been utilised. 7 We are glad in publishing the digital version of this book and offering it to all for free-download in commemoration of the birth-centenary of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamigal.
