From July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2013, these activities were funded with a $890,970 grant from IMLS, matched by $1,122,436 in cash and in-kind services by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) and its partner, the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM). In all, 244 unique continuing education training opportunities were provided to 6,857 people. Results of an independent evaluation report indicate that IMLS-funded continuing education programs tailored to the culturally-specific needs of tribal library and museum staff members are considered by 95.1% of participants to be better at meeting their needs and expectations than other training opportunities. (available at www.atalm.org) Page 2 Preserving Tribal Language, Memory, and Lifeways: A Continuing Education Project for the 21st Century WHY CULTURALLY RELEVANT PROGRAMS ARE NEEDED From a 20011 study, ATALM has determined that 68% of the 565 federally- recognized tribal nations in the United States maintain archives, libraries, museums, and/or cultural centers. Another 11% are actively engaged in developing facilities. TRIBAL LIBRARIES OFTEN ARE IN RURAL AREAS THAT ARE NOT SERVED BY PUBLIC LIBRARIES. COLLECTIONS OFTEN FEATURE CULTURALLY SPECIFIC HOLDINGS AS WELL AS POPULAR BOOKS, MAGAZINES, AND AUDIO/VIDEO OFFERINGS Tribal archives, libraries, and museums are valued for their role in helping to preserve and nurture distinct cultural practices and for their role in providing educational opportunities for tribal members. Unlike most mainstream organizations, tribal archives, libraries, and museums may operate under culturally specific practices while providing an expanded scope of services. For example: TRIBAL LIBRARIES OFTEN ARE THE ONLY SOURCE OF FREE Tribal nations frequently structure their archives, libraries, COMPUTERS AND INTERNET ACCESS IN TRIBAL COMMUNITIES and museum functions like state-sponsored historical societies, incorporating archives, libraries, and museum functions under one roof and/or under a common authority. Each component functions independently, but with the shared objectives of providing educational and culturally- relevant services. In addition to providing typical services associated with archives, libraries, and museums, tribal facilities may also provide resources for language revitalization, instruction in cultural life ways, historic preservation, cultural tourism, health care services, literacy services, economic development, TRIBAL LIBRARIES OFTEN SERVE AS ARCHIVAL REPOSITORIES job training, and other services. FOR RECORDS OF PERMANENT VALUE TO THE TRIBE Many tribal centers of culture employ tribal members with invaluable cultural knowledge but little formal training in archive, library and/or museum practices. TRIBALLY-CONTROLLED MUSEUMS ARE ESSENTIAL TO TRIBAL LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS OFTEN PROVIDE LIFE- MAINTAINING AND ADVANCING CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES LONG LEARNING CENTERS Page 3 Preserving Tribal Language, Memory, and Lifeways: A Continuing Education Project for the 21st Century SUMMARY OF PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS In 2009 IMLS granted $890,970 to the Oklahoma Department of Libraries for the purpose of: 1) Sponsoring five national educational opportunities, including a Tribal History/Digital Storytelling Institute (2010), a tribal track at the American Association for State and Local History National Conference (2010), a Library Leadership Development Institute (2011), a Museum Services Institute (June 2011), and a National Conference of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (2012). 2) Designing and implementing a comprehensive national needs assessment/current condition study of tribal cultural institutions, with baseline information used to plan future programs and evaluate effectiveness of programs; and 3) Developing a long‐term management plan to establish a framework to sustain the project activities beyond 2012. With remaining funds generated through earned income and financial support from non-IMLS institutions, the grant was extended through June 2013. The extension enabled the production of an international convening in New Mexico, thereby significantly extending the impact of IMLS funding. Listed in order of occurrence, the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and its project partners: Worked with the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development to conduct a groundbreaking National Needs Assessment Study of Archives, Libraries, and Museums. Formed the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) and incorporated it as a 501(c)3 organization. Developed a Strategic Plan to help guide the activities of ATALM. Developed a project/organizational website (www.atalm.org) and social media networks. Provided tribal programming at the 2010 American Association of State and Local History Annual Conference. Supported the work of 20 Tribal Heritage Research Fellows. Provided six Researching Tribal History Webinars. Developed a Researching Tribal History Toolkit. Developed a Researching Tribal History Wiki that continues to serve as a resource for others. Conducted a week-long Research and Using Tribal History Fieldtrip to Washington, DC. Conducted a four-day 2010 Caring for Indigenous Materials Institute in Durango, CO. Conducted a 3.5 day 2011 Working Together to Move Forward Joint Conference with the Western Museums Association, Pacific Islands Museums Association, and Alu Like in Honolulu. Produced a 26-page

Deborah Bateman Executive Vice President of Specialty Banking and Marketing for National Bank of Arizona A second-generation Valley native, Deborah Bateman began her 40-year banking career as a teller trainee at Valley National Bank. Now at the helm of National Bank of Arizona in Phoenix, Bateman says it was being a teller that influenced her to stay within the banking field. “I can’t say that was what I focused on being but, once I got into the industry, I recognized my ability to serve others and help our community,” says the University of Washington in Seattle graduate. Bateman notes that working in banking requires more than just taking deposits and cashing checks. “You’re put in a position of influence where you can support your community and help others to be financially successful,” she says.

Bialac Native American Art Collection Arizona attorney James T. Bialac (UA, Law, class of ’59) began collecting Native American art in 1964. Over the next 50 years, he amassed one of the most important private collections of contemporary Native art in the world. His collection contains approximately 2,500 two-dimensional works of art and more than 2,500 three-dimensional works, including katsinam carvings, textiles, pottery, and jewelry. Works from the Native cultures of the Southwest comprise the majority of the collection, but tribal groups from regions across North America are represented, including the Arctic, the Northeast Woodlands, the Southeast, the Plains and into Mexico. Remarkably, the artistic quality of the collection is equaled by its pristine physical condition. Mr. Bialac has been particularly attentive to the care and conservation of the works on paper, ensuring that they have been framed behind ultraviolet glass with archival quality acid-free mats.     About the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) MISSION The Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) is an international organization that serves the needs of those who work to protect and advance cultural sovereignty. ATALM WORKS TO: Raise public awareness of the contributions and needs of indigenous cultural institutions through its international network of partners, both indigenous and non-indigenous; Provide culturally responsive services and programs through regional and national training events, web resources, and individual consultations; Partner with national organizations that provide training and services related to archives, libraries, and museums to incorporate indigenous perspectives into programs and services; and Serve as an advocate for indigenous cultural institutions with tribal leaders, funders, and government officials.
