PARIS LE MEURICE Two day itinerary: Old Favourites Paris may well have its modern side, but at its core the city retains a resolute sense of grandeur and historical influence. From the world’s most visited art museums to sites dating back to the French Revolution, as well as countless other temples to culture and good taste, this two-day itinerary for the City of Light is rich in iconic landmarks. Day One From Le Meurice, take a 20-minute taxi ride straight to the Sacré Coeur for the first stop of the day. SACRÉ COEUR T: 01 53 41 89 00 | 35 Rue du Chevalier-de-la-Barre, 75018 Paris Perched on the top of the Butte Montmartre, the Sacré Coeur stands at the highest point in Paris, like a sentinel overlooking the sprawling cityscape. The climb upwards is rewarded with unmatched vistas, but the basilica itself is also worth a wander: three-domed and gleaming white, the striking landmark officially opened in 1914. The Musée du Louvre is then 20 minutes away by taxi. MUSÉE DU LOUVRE T: 01 40 20 53 17 | 75058 Paris The world’s most visited art museum (nearly 10 million visitors pass through its iconic pyramid entrance each year), the Louvre is an unsurpassed bastion of the arts. Given that around 35,000 individual pieces are on display at any one time, from the Mona Lisa to Greco-Roman antiquities, it would take weeks to fully explore these hallowed halls. Before Stendhal Syndrome sets in, enjoy a peaceful reprieve in the Jardin des Tuileries outside. Next, take a 15-minute walk to Place Vendôme. PLACE VENDÔME 75001 Paris Taking pride of place in the glitzy first arrondissement, the Place Vendôme is an upmarket public square crowned by the Colonne Vendôme, a war monument originally commissioned by Napoleon. Despite being built as a monument to political and military might, today the square is populated by jewellery stores and other high-end addresses. Then, head back towards the river, taking a 15-minute walk through the Jardin des Tuileries and over the Seine to the Musée d’Orsay. Masterpieces by the likes of Monet, Mondrian and Gauguin adorn the walls, while other vast exhibition rooms are dedicated to sculpture, photography and furnishings. The final stop of the day is the Place de la Concorde, 10 minutes’ walk from the museum. PLACE DE LA CONCORDE 75008 Paris The Place de la Concorde is an iconic public square with a chequered past. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, amongst many others, were sent to the guillotine here during the height of the French Revolution, but today it possesses a far more sedate atmosphere. The ancient Egyptian Luxor Obelisk, which stands in the centre of the Place de la Concorde, is especially impressive. The hotel is then less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Place de la Concorde. Day two To spend the morning at the Château de Versailles, take a 40-minute taxi ride from the hotel. CHÂTEAU DE VERSAILLES T: 01 30 83 78 00 | Place d’Armes, 78000 Versailles Impossibly opulent, the vast Palace of Versailles, located southwest of Paris, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as one of France’s most visually striking landmarks. Once the home of royalty, today its sweeping grounds, royal stables and magnificent interior are open to visitors. Then, take a taxi for the 40-minute journey to the Pont Neuf. PONT NEUF 75001 Paris The oldest bridge in Paris (despite its name, which translates to “New Bridge”), the scenic Pont Neuf stretches across the Seine, connecting both the Left and Right Banks with the Île de la Cité. Rich in royal history and romance, the stone bridge offers some of Paris’s most impressive vistas. A 10-minute walk through the Île de la Cité will then bring you to Notre Dame Cathedral. An imposing example of the gothic style, the landmark is just as impressive from the inside, where visitors can marvel at its rose windows, soaring vaults and ornate carvings. From Notre Dame, the Place des Vosges is 10 minutes away by taxi or 20 minutes on foot. PLACE DES VOSGES 75004 Paris Once the favoured haunt of noblemen and members of 17th century high society, the Place des Vosges – located in the scenic Marais district – is one of Europe’s oldest residential squares. Flanked by rows of distinctive red-bricked houses, today the square is an urban oasis, with no shortage of surrounding bars and cafes offering prime locations for a coffee. The Palais Garnier, the final stop of the day, is then 15 minutes away by taxi. PALAIS GARNIER T: 01 71 25 24 23 | Place de l’Opéra, 75009 Paris An utterly opulent example of 19th century French architecture, the Palais Garnier hosts the Opéra National de Paris, in addition to performances by visiting ballet companies and orchestras. The foyer, with its sea of chandeliers and grand staircase, makes stopping by a necessity, even for those who don’t have a performance booked. To get back to the hotel, take a five-minute taxi ride or 15-minute walk. All journey times are approximate and subject to variation. If that seems like too much for you, break it down into several different outings (taxis roll down the Champs-Elysées frequently and Métro stops are located every 3 blocks). Take your time and enjoy. It’s a great roll or stroll day or night. The tour begins at the top of the Champs-Elysées, across a huge traffic circle from the famous Arc de Triomphe. Note that getting to the arch itself, and access within the arch, are extremely challenging for travelers with limited mobility. I suggest simply viewing the arch from across the street (described below). If you are able, and you wish to visit the arch, here’s the informa- tion: The arch is connected to the top of the Champs-Elysées via an underground walkway (twenty-five 6” steps down and thirty 6” steps back up). To reach this passageway, take the Métro to the not-acces- sible Charles de Gaulle Etoile station and follow sortie #1, Champs- Elysées/Arc de Triomphe signs. You can take an elevator only partway up the inside of the arch, to a museum with some city views. To reach the best views at the very top, you must climb the last 46 stairs. Gaston Leroux's 1911 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, has a considerable number of allusions, some of which are accessible to modern American audiences, like references to Romeo and Juilet. Many of the references, however, are very specific to the operatic world or to other somewhat obscure fields. Knowledge of these allusions would greatly enhance the experience of readers of the novel, and would also contribute to their ability to interpret it. Thus my thesis aims to be helpful to those who read The Phantom of the Opera by providing a set of notes, as it were, to explain the allusions, with an emphasis on the extended allusion of the Palais Garnier and the historical models for the heroine, Christine Daae. Notes on Translations At the time of this writing, three English translations are commercially available of The Phantom of the Opera.

For three centuries, the City of Light was the place of the most audacious and innovative artistic advances, focusing on itself the attention of the whole world. This survey course offers students a wide panorama on the evolution of arts and architecture in France and more particularly in Paris, from the beginning of the 17th century to nowadays. The streets of the French capital still preserve the tracks of its glorious history through its buildings, its town planning and its great collections of painting, sculpture and decorative arts. As an incubator of modernity, Paris saw the rising of a new epoch governed – for better or worse – by faith in progress and reason. As literature and science, art participated in the transformations of society, being surely its more accurate reflection. Since the French Revolution, art have accompanied political and social changes, opened to the contestation of academic practice, and led to an artistic and architectural avant-garde driven to depict contemporary experience and to develop new representational means. Creators, by their plastic experiments and their creativity, give the definitive boost to a modern aesthetics and new references. After the trauma of both World War and the American economic and cultural new hegemony, appeared a new artistic order, where artists confronted with mass-consumer society, challenging an insane post-war modernity.

    France and Paris were changed dramatically by the Enlightenment and ensuing French Revolution. Likewise, many of the monuments and buildings you’ll see on this walk were “reinvented” during the 18th century. The Panthéon, where this walk starts, began as a church sponsored by an absolute monarch and ended the century as a monument to the country’s most famous Enlightenment figures. The place de la Concorde, where the walk ends, saw one monarch celebrated with a statue and another executed on the same site. Saint-Sulpice and Saint- Thomas-d’Aquin were transformed from churches to secular “temples” and back to churches again. And the Palais du Luxembourg, Hôtel de Salm, and Palais Bourbon, homes at the beginning of the century to royalty and aristocrats, ended the century as homes to the country’s newly created democratic institutions. In addition to showcasing neoclassical buildings and monuments, the walk also provides an opportunity to wander through part of the Saint-Germain des Prés quarter, one of the city’s most lively and interesting neighborhoods.
