  • Multiculturalism in the Creation of a Gibraltarian Identity
canessa 6 13/07/2018 15:33 Page 102 Chapter Four ‘An Example to the World!’: Multiculturalism in the Creation of a Gibraltarian Identity Luis Martínez, Andrew Canessa and Giacomo Orsini Ethnicity is an essential concept to explain how national identities are articulated in the modern world. Although all countries are ethnically diverse, nation-formation often tends to structure around discourses of a core ethnic group and a hegemonic language.1 Nationalists invent a dominant – and usually essentialised – narrative of the nation, which often set aside the languages, ethnicities, and religious beliefs of minori- ties inhabiting the nation-state’s territory.2 In the last two centuries, many nation-building processes have excluded, removed or segregated ethnic groups from the national narrative and access to rights – even when they constituted the majority of the population as in Bolivia.3 On other occasions, the hosting state assimilated immigrants and ethnic minorities, as they adopted the core-group culture and way of life. This was the case of many immigrant groups in the USA, where, in the 1910s and 1920s, assimilation policies were implemented to acculturate minorities, ‘in attempting to win the immigrant to American ways’.4 In the 1960s, however, the model of a nation-state as being based on a single ethnic group gave way to a model that recognised cultural diver- sity within a national territory. The civil rights movements changed the politics of nation-formation, and many governments developed strate- gies to accommodate those secondary cultures in the nation-state. Multiculturalism is what many poly-ethnic communities – such as, for instance, Canada and Australia – used to redefine their national identi- ties through the recognition of internal cultural difference.

That this year we have been privileged to be able to announce the extension of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal’s Patronage for a further three years is testament to the success and prestige of this very special Festival. To have welcomed Her Royal Highness last month to Gibraltar House in London was an honour, being the first member of the Royal Family to visit our home in Britain’s capital. Royal Patronage is a very powerful endorsement of the values and aspirations that the Gibraltarian people have as a vibrant and loyal member of the British family of nations. Our Literary Festival is a prime example of this, with its array of internationally-acclaimed authors, an unprecedented Schools’ Programme and provision of a cultural space that encourage local writers to participate. This has been a very important year for Gibraltar. We and Jonathan Meades and the many others who will have enjoyed huge political support from the United all speak at the Festival for the first time.

  • 1St EAST ANGLIAN REGIMENT (Royal Norfolk & Suffolk)
Brigadier R. H. Maxwell, C.B.. Colonel, 1 st East Anglian Regiment (Royal Norfolk and Suffolk). 14 Message from the Colonel of the Regiment During our discussion prior to amalgamation it was decided that our respective Regimental Journals — The Britannia and The Suffolk Regimental Gazette — should cease publication, and that a new Journal should be started which would record not only the activities of the Regular and Territorial Battalions, but also the news and doings of Past Members of each former Regiment. The merging of the two publications is another step in the process of amalgamation, which has been carried out so happily and successfully. In wishing The Britannia and Castle every success, I would stress that this can only be achieved by the active support of all, both by buying the Journal and contributing to its pages. A good Journal is a great Regimental asset, in that it serves to keep all Past and Present Members of The Regiment in touch, not only with the Regiment itself, but with each other. I sincerely hope that it will achieve a very wide circulation. R. H. MAXWELL, Brigadier, Colonel, The First East Anglian Regiment. 16 H.R.H. The Princess Margaret, Colonel-in-Chief.
