Wow, what an election! In all my years I never dreamed we would see our politics be so divided and strident in America. Faced with the current jumble of political ideas, what's a Catholic to do? No matter what else you do or do not do, pray. Pray for the country; pray for the common good; and pray for our elected officials. Pray for the ones you like and pray extra hard for those you don’t like. Please read up on Catholic social teaching and share what you read and talk about it at the dinner table. Catholic social teaching doesn’t fit cleanly into left/ right categories. The challenge of being Catholic is to transcend partisanship. Both sides are full of policies that conflict with our faith. On the left, there is the push for abortion and attempts to restrict or redefine religious freedom. I’m not sure we are ready for socialism. The first requirement of any form of socialism, or Left-ism, if you will, involves turning away from God. Marx’s writing is quite fierce about that. Is that a worry? I’m not sure. On the right, there is a push for economic programs that have created income inequality of historic proportions. Francis criticized the "idolatry of money" beseeching politicians to guarantee all citizens "dignified work, education, and health care." Democrats and Republicans can and should work together, live together. Differences and disagreements about means shouldn't prevent Catholics from seeing that we all (ought to) desire the same ends: a flourishing nation, that’s fair to all, under God, and indivisible. As Catholics, our social tradition is a moral framework we should all embrace. It challenges both right and left, labor and management to focus on the dignity of the human person and the common good rather than their own political or economic interests. This Lent lets all vow to meet our neighbors. Listen to them. Love them, whether they are left or right, whether they are like us or wildly different. Live love. Whatever else you do, do something! Catholics are called to be in the world, even as we are not of it. Don't wait for someone else to come along and fix everything; take up what gifts and talents you possess and fix something. That's the attitude that will bring

our country together again. saintbrigidparish.org/prayer

For each Station we will reference the Scriptural origin and provide reflection questions for you to use during your prayer time at home or while attending the Stations of the Cross here as a community. Stations of the Cross Mural at St. B’s—Second Panel (Stations V through VII) The Stations mural runs from right to left, begins on the north wall closest to the altar, and goes counter- clockwise around the church. Distinct features of Father de Wit’s mural and this second panel include: The entire mural emphasizes three types of humanity—the hypocritical type represented by the Pharisees, the ignorant ones who know not what they do, and the truly devout with silver halos. Vibrant colors and flowing cloth as seen on the Pharisees in their robes of green, gold, and purple Watch the centurion throughout, with his blue helmet, sword, and red robe, as he goes through a conversion of faith—In Station VI his head is downcast and in Station VII he is looking away. In Station V Simon of Cyrene and others are in contemporary clothing (jeans, shorts, and hat). In Station VII we began to see the women who Jesus consoles in Station VIII.

ABB+,7 C,#L7J A X,7 Sharing God’s Love and Provision Beyond Our Parish

“Christ has no body now, but yours. No hands, no feet on earth, but yours. Yours are Gratitude in Action the eyes through which Christ looks compassion into the world. Yours are the feet 2020 ANNUAL with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the hands CATHOLIC APPEAL with which Christ blesses the DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO world.” —St. Teresa of Avila We carry out this call to be “The Body of Christ” in inspirational ways as we share our time and talents within a variety of ministries in the parish, the community, and across the globe. In addition to hands-on involvement in these ministries, we also share our financial resources in order to help bring God’s love and provision to others. We contribute to the mission of our parish through recurring participation in the Sunday Offering, and we are called to share our financial resources beyond the parish as well. Each year, parishioners throughout the our diocese are encouraged to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal of the Diocese of San Diego (ACA). The ACA provides us an opportunity to share our gifts beyond our parish boundaries in support of ministries that serve San Diego and Imperial Counties. United with 96 other parishes throughout the diocese, we can make a tremendous impact on the lives of our brothers and sisters! This year’s goal for the Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal is $3,500,000. Our parish assessment is $77,000. With your generosity, we can well exceed this amount. Funds collected beyond our parish goal will go in support of our Facilities improvement Fund. We are grateful to all who have already contributed! If you have not had a chance to participate yet, you may bring your contributions to the Parish Office, or give online via QR Code or text, or by visiting saintbrigidparish.org/aca. Why We Fast Few things go against our popular culture like the practice of fasting. Society teaches us that as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else, we’re free to indulge in whatever we want. The Bible has a different lesson though. Throughout the Old Testament, wayward Israelites frequently fasted to demonstrate their desire to return to the Lord’s path. Prophets would sometimes declare a fast for the whole people in order to plead for God’s mercy. In the Gospels, Jesus is shown to fast for a full forty days in the desert in order to prepare Himself for the beginning of His ministry. These examples show us the two main purposes that fasting serves in our lives. Firstly, engaging in self-denial is a powerful form of penance. It’s a demonstration to God that we are sorry for our sins and that we want to change our ways. It’s not something that God demands of us so much as a voluntary sacrifice that pleases Him. Secondly, as we fast from our worldly desires, we are forced to rely less on them and more on God. In doing so, we learn that we are masters of passions, not slaves to them. Little pleasures, whether they be food or drink or entertainment, often play an outsized role in our lives. Fasting is a reminder that we are free, that these things do not control us. It teaches us that “one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God” (Dt 8:3, Mt 4:4). As we struggle to sustain our Lenten sacrifices, let us resist every temptation, calling to mind our sins and trusting more in God. Explore more ways to pray, fast, serve,
