Overcrowded, overbuilt, and overshadowed by a continuous air of menace, this gothic nightmare is a breeding ground for the depraved, the indifferent, and the criminally insane. Its also the object of one mans obsession. Witness to the brutal murder of his parents, Bruce Wayne has dedicated his life to protecting this city, taking a form to inspire hope in the innocent...and fear in the guilty. He is the masked vigilante known as the Batman. Now the battlefield has changed. Leveled by a massive earthquake that left thousands dead and millions more wounded, Gotham City has been transformed into a lawless wilderness -- a No Mans Land -- where the survivors are turning against one another, and where the citys protectors are torn by a crisis that may consume them all. I first read Batman: No Mans Land in 2000. As a Batgirl/Barbara Gordon fan, I was beyond thrilled when I picked it up and discovered it began as narrated by Barbara, in her role as Oracle. NML held a greater depth and respect for her character than I had ever come across, and I was immediately hooked. I was prompted to seek out other novelizations, graphic novels, and began reading current comics. While the New 52 has more or less erased the events of NML, this novelization is a great way to read an excellent, and my personal favorite, story arc in the Batman library (the updated graphic novel collection is four hefty volumes long). The characterizations of all the main players--people that typically didnt get the spotlight--are all superb: Jim Gordon, Renee Montoya, Huntress, and notably Cassandra Cain, who is introduced in NML. Batman of course makes his eventual appearance, and hes well written, too, but in his absence lesser characters were able to shine. I just ordered a hardback to preserve my paperback, which is breaking at the spine, and will be retired as my reading copy. It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.

TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND THE AMERICAN WAY: WHAT SUPERMAN TEACHES US ABOUT THE AMERICAN DREAM AND CHANGING VALUES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES Lauren N. Karp AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Lauren N. Karp for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on June 4, 2009 . Title: Truth, Justice, and the American Way: What Superman Teaches Us about the American Dream and Changing Values within the United States Abstract approved: ____________________________________________________________________ Evan Gottlieb This thesis is a study of the changes in the cultural definition of the American Dream. I have chosen to use Superman comics, from 1938 to the present day, as litmus tests for how we have societally interpreted our ideas of “success” and the “American Way.” This work is primarily a study in culture and social changes, using close reading of comic books to supply evidence. I argue that we can find three distinct periods where the definition of the American Dream has changed significantly—and the identity of Superman with it. I also hypothesize that we are entering an era with an entirely new definition of the American Dream, and thus Superman must similarly change to meet this new definition. ENGLISH 480: THE MODERN AMERICAN SUPERHERO PROFESSOR BEN SAUNDERS Office Hours: Friday, 2pm-5pm, 366 PLC* E-mail: [email protected] Description: Once upon a time, the four-color world of the superhero was a comfortingly simple place. Whether they came from distant galaxies, other dimensions, or our home planet, the super-powered beings of the 1940s and 50s were secure in their sense of righteousness and saw no contradiction in aligning truth and justice with the American way. But in the 1960s superheroes experienced a crisis of confidence. They became more neurotic, more driven by guilt than moral rectitude, and more likely to be feared and misunderstood than revered and admired. Throughout the 1970s, things got worse. The Green Lantern was accused of racism; Spider-Man’s girlfriend was murdered; Superman wondered about his own relevance; Iron Man turned to the bottle. By the 1980s it had become hard to tell the heroes from the villains. In Watchmen, the single most influential superhero narrative of the late 20th century, super-beings were imagined variously as weapons in the Cold War, wannabe celebrities chasing the corporate dollar, self-loathing closet cases, and damaged psychotics. When the comic book industry underwent one of its periodic collapses in the 1990s it looked like it was all over for the spandex set. But today, superheroes are enjoying a commercial renaissance; indeed, the figure of the superhero has become one of the dominant fantasies of our present moment. What does all this tell us about the genre? And what does it say about us — our culture, politics, and values? In this class we will map the path of the American superhero and consider the ways in which that journey reflects larger processes of social change.
