Easter is the greatest and the most important feast in the Church. It marks the birthday of our eternal hope. "Easter" literally means "the feast of fresh flowers." We celebrate it with pride and jubilation for three reasons: 1. The resurrection of Christ is the basis of our Christian Faith. The Resurrection is the greatest of the miracles -- it proves that Jesus is God. 2. Easter is the guarantee of our own resurrection. Jesus assured Martha at the tomb of Lazarus: “I am the Resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Me will live even though he dies” 3. Easter is a feast which gives us hope and encouragement. In this world of pain, sorrows and tears, Easter reminds us that life is worth living. We are in truth called to be an "Easter people", because there are many Easter moments in our lives. It may be in prayer, when for a moment we really experience the love of God, especially having felt his absence, as we often do, like the disciples who experienced the emptiness of the tomb. It may be that moment when we are touched and given hope by a word of scripture - like the disciples on the road to Emmaus when their hearts were uplifted in joy and hope as the Lord opened up the scriptures to them. Or it may be a moment during the sacrament of confession, after we have acknowledged honestly our weakness and selfishness, our sinfulness and come to experience his forgiveness. Indeed, there are times in our lives when we know, through faith, that the times of calm after the storm, of joy after sorrow, of restored strength after weary days on our journey of faith, are truly times when we share in his paschal mystery. Alleluia, Christ is Risen! March 2016 Newsletter First Congregational United Church of Christ 1000 Willson Avenue - Webster City, Iowa 50595 515-832-2232 http://www.firstcongregationalwc.org/ “The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.”—John 2:13-22 Today I remembered an old family Easter ritual I hadn’t thought of in decades! When we were little, my siblings and I used to color Easter eggs during Holy Week using Paas egg dyes and wax crayons. We would gather six coffee cups, add a half cup of vinegar to each one, drop the color tablet in, and when it was dissolved we would top the cup off with water.

We gather as a community of believers to share this amazing story. Our proclamation is little different today than when Mary proclaimed her story to the disciples. They bury Jesus in a borrowed tomb. Jesus’ friends came to the tomb on the first day of the week. The stone was rolled away. It was not rolled away that he might come out, but that they might go in. Jesus was not there. Jesus appears to Mary. Mary follows Jesus’ calling to tell her story. From that day, Jesus has been calling men and women to share their stories, to preach the good news of the resurrection of Christ. Are you willing to look for God working in the world in surprising ways? How can we on this Easer Sunday experience the Resurrected Christ anew? As the morning sun rises in the east, let us remember that wonderful day when Mary and the disciples arrived at the empty tomb. Jesus called Mary to share in the unexpected glory of that first Easter. Jesus is still calling us today to share in Christ’s unexpected glories.
