Cheyenne Avenue Las Vegas, NV 89108-4931 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, (702) 645-1777  FAX (702) 645-8107 the Israelites gathered together, fasting and E-Mail: [email protected] wearing sackcloth and Web site: http://www.holyspiritlasvegas.org putting dust on their ELCA: www.elca.org heads. Those of Israelite descent had WORSHIP HOURS separated themselves (Nursery Provided) from all foreigners. They Contemporary 8:30am stood where they were and read from the Book of Sunday School 9:35am the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the Traditional 10:30am day, and spent another quarter in confession and in OFFICE HOURS worshiping the LORD their God.-Nehemiah 9: 1-3 Monday-Thursday 8am - 4:30pm Fasting has always been a part of our faith history, going back to the Friday 8am - 12:00pm Israelites. Refusing to eat is a way of humbling oneself. Part of what our CHURCH STAFF faith ancestors have passed down to us, was the understanding that there Pastor Jeremy Nausin is supposed to be certain times of year that we remember our past, our Music Minister Tim Beasley truth, and our failures. There is a time to celebrate in joy and other times to Guitarist Andrew Silva wretch with grief. There is a reality to our faith that includes us taking a Office Manager Loretta Block time to reflect and return to God with heart, soul, mind and body. This Custodian Karen Dunn “returning” is a reminder that one day, each of us will return to our Lord Groundskeeper Terry West forever. CHURCH COUNCIL One common faith practice during Lent is the practice of giving something Keith Hopkey, President 702 255-9042 up, or adding something faithful to your daily life during the 40 days. Often Michele Anderson, VP 702 540-0637 times this usually includes giving up some kind of food, habit, or indulgence Ray Betts, Secretary 702 232-0337 as what we give up. Adding things like community service, food pantry Jim Cassidy 630 740-8003 donation, or charity giving are other ways that people enhance their Lenten Matthew McMahan Youth Rep journey. All of these are great ways to help enhance your experience; to Mike McMahan 702 243-9283 make physical your faith in a daily walk. Janet Saterlie 702 658-8042 Marsha Stephenson 702 645-4316 However, this Lent I want to challenge you to try something new. This Cindy White 702 243-5647 would be a way to both add and give something up for this spiritual season. Eileen Miers Recording Secretary Often times when I read the Bible, I read a part of the Scriptures and then Dean Chapman Treasurer take some time in reflection over what I have read. But one of the joys of being a pastor is to read what other Newsletter Staff people think about Scripture. I think there is something Editor/Layout: faithful about not always reading into Scripture what we Jackie Hopkey – 702 255-9042 think, or we know. So I am going to challenge you this E-Mail: [email protected] Lent to do a bit of fasting for your mind. Or you may Proof: Ruth Ann Isaacs, Loretta Block look at it in terms of adding something to your Lenten Journey. Find one commentary, (it could be from the local library, or our church library, or talk to me if you want to borrow one of mine) to read during Lent.

Take some time to engage with the author in their writing. Do you agree with them? Do you find something inspiring? Are there edges that make you wrestle? Have they shown you something you haven’t seen before? What’s their theology (understanding of God)? I think this is a different approach to fasting this Lent. Fasting from our own thoughts and listening to the views of others, can be a good way to reflect on our faith.

The Origin of “Easter” t’s not certain where the word Easter, which never appears in Scripture originated. In some places, the day is called IPasch, which comes from “Passover,” the festival during which Jesus was crucified. Others call it Resurrection Sunday. Some scholars think the church absorbed the word Easter from pagan roots, because the goddess of spring, Eostre, was celebrated about the same time as Passover. Others suggest the word derives from an old Latin phrase referring to the white robes traditionally worn by people being baptized on the Sunday that celebrates Jesus’ resurrection.
