Kirkeminde Collection, 1877-1977, is centered around items collected by Patricia B. Kirkeminde and primarily focuses on research for her book, History of Veterinary Medicine in Tennessee, about the history of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. The Patricia B. Kirkeminde Collection is a gift of Mrs. Patricia B. Kirkeminde of Crossville, Tennessee. The materials in this collection measure 3.5 linear feet of shelf space. There are approximately 1184 items included in this collection. Complete copies of the collection may not be made; however, single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Patricia B. Kirkeminde Collection may be made for purposes of scholarly research. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Patricia Barclay Kirkeminde Patricia Barclay Kirkeminde, wife of Dr. William P. Kirkeminde, was born on July 22, 1924, in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1949, she graduated from Kansas State University. In 1970, Mrs. Kirkeminde received her Master of Arts degree from Tennessee Tech. She is a member of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary and served as President in 1966 and 1972. Mrs. Kirkeminde is also a member of the Tennessee Folklore Society, Kansas Folklore Society, Mississippi Folklore Society, American Folklore Society, International Women’s Auxiliary, Kansas State University Alumni Association, and the Kansas State Historical Society. She is an Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Kentucky and an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. She and her husband have four children: Shirley Oliver, Katherine Kirkeminde, Paul Kirkeminde, and Kirk Kirkeminde. Source: Information in the biographical note was gleaned from various items within this collection. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Patricia B. Kirkeminde Collection, containing approximately 1184 items, spans the period 1877-1977. The collection is composed of annual reports, awards, bibliographical materials, biennial reports, certificates, charters, constitutions and by- laws, correspondence, directories, ephemera, file codes, magazine articles, membership lists, newsletters, newspaper articles, notes, sketches and subpoenas. A large portion of this collection relates to the history of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. The arrangement of items is alphabetical with the exception of the photographs and negatives, which have been placed, in a separate box at the end of the collection. The annual report, located in folder 1 of box 1, is dated, 1974. It is the annual report of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary. A Treasurer’s Report is also contained in the annual report materials. The awards, located in folder 2 of box 1, are lists of Veterinarian of the Year Award winners, Special Service Award winners, and Honorary Members of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. The awards span the period 1909-1976. The bibliographical materials, located in folder 3 of box 1, contain bibliographical sources for Mrs. Kirkeminde’s book, History of Veterinary Medicine in Tennessee. The biennial reports, located in folder 4 of box 1, contain biennial reports from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture. The biennial reports span the period 1887-1954. The certificates, located in folder 5 of box 1, contain two certificates from the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. One of the certificates is a Certificate of Cooperation for Oakland High School. The other certificate is a Certificate of Participation for Julie Lynn, a student at Oakland High School. The charter, located in folder 6 of box 1, is a photocopy of the Charter of Incorporation for the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. The constitution and by-laws, located in folders 7 and 8 of box 1, contain the constitution and by-laws for the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association and the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary. The correspondence, located in folders 9 and 10 of box 1, contain various letters pertaining to the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. Correspondents include but are not limited to: Dr. L. G. Brown, Dr. A. C. Topmiller, Joseph A. S. Miller, Dr. G. P. Hatchett, Glenn Riggs, Dr. Walter L. Martin, Mary Jo Laub, Dr. John R. McCoy, Louise Hargrove, and Patricia B. Kirkeminde. Due to a respect of the original order of Mrs. Kirkeminde’s files, various pieces of correspondence can also be found in the sketches materials, located in folder 8 of box 2 through folder 27 of box 6. The directories, located in folders 11 and 12 of box 1, contained in this collection consist of a Directory of Licensed Veterinary Practitioners in Tennessee (published by the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and dated, June 8, 1921) and a directory for the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association (dated, 1970). The ephemera, located in folder 13 of box 1, are a vast collection of flyers, convention programs, continuing education pamphlets, and handbooks. All of the ephemera pertain to the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association and the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary. One item of note found within the ephemera is a Health Career Fairs poster with a picture of a veterinary medicine exhibit. The file code, located in folder 14 of box 1, is the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association’s file code. It has the file code numbers for various subjects that include the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association charter, list of properties, bulk mail permits, income tax reports, women’s auxiliary, biographies, etc. The magazines, located in folders 15 through 18 of box 1, are a collection of various magazine articles related to the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary, various Tennessee veterinarians, and veterinary medicine in Tennessee. Notable magazines include: American Veterinary Association Journal, Tennessee Agriculture, and The Tennessee Veterinarian. The membership lists, located in folders 19 and 20 of box 1, contain membership lists and officer lists of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association. The newsletters, located in folders 1 through 3 of box 2, contain various newsletters from the American Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary, the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, and the Tennessee Veterinary Medicals Association Auxiliary. The newspapers, located in folder 4 of box 2, contain various newspaper articles related to the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association, the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Auxiliary, and veterinary medicine in Tennessee.
