Despite the challenges we and the industry are facing, we are optimistic about 2021. This is because we love cinema and good films and series – and particularly in these difficult times, they are also some thing that is needed by audiences around the world. Time and again in recent years, German feature films and series have succeeded in captivating viewers abroad, and we are confident that this will be the case in 2021 as well. In particular, the new wave of German documentaries is establishing itself increasingly as a favourite with international audiences. We are just as proud of the German Films campaign FACE TO FACE, which has been in existence for six years now, and delighted that we will be able to continue it with a great new pool of talent in 2021 – despite the difficult current conditions. Films and series are created through the work of a large team, which is why we have decided to highlight a greater diversity of film professions in 2021 and are proudly presenting the premiere of our new faces in this issue of GFQ. German Films Quarterly will broaden its format in 2021: We will also open our publication to contri butions dealing with internationally controversial topics in the film industry.

NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2019 German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA) are happy to present together a new edition of the short film program NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER! This showcase of the most promising German directing talents and new film trends can look back on a remark able 20year history. Audiences around the world have been given the chance to discover ex ceptional student shorts – the NEXT GENERATION of German cinema – together with the best German shorts under 5 minutes – the winners of the FFA’s SHORT TIGER Award. The 13 short films selected by an expert jury for NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2019 represent a wide diversity of forms, genres, subjects and skillful filmmaking. The films scan deeply under the surface of current social topics and share fascinating perspectives with the audience. Their stories are deeply personal as well as immensely universal, told from different angles and in a variety of styles. This program confirms that short film is an inde p endent art form deserving of the big screen and the awareness of audiences. We hope you share our enthusiasm and help us spread the word: the program will be available after Cannes for screenings at international festivals and film events throughout the year. PLEASE COME AND ENJOY! The films for NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2019 were selected by an expert jury: writerdirector Doris Dörrie, Daniel Ebner (Artistic Director VIS Vienna Shorts Festival) and Dr. Gregory Theile (Kinopolis/Theile Group). The NEXT GENERATION student films were chosen from a total of 59 submissions from 11 film schools; to be eligible the films had to be 15 minutes or under and completed at German film schools in 2018 or 2019.

When everything is disintegrating all you can do is wait for the end while passing the time. Why not with music and dance? An apocalyptic world with three women and three men. Apparently their shabby festive dresses and their memories are all that is left to them. They are recounting fragmentary stories of the past, of a European war that appears as surreal as the colourful festive illumination of the rundown ballroom where the six people – not in the mood for partying at all – are gathered. They call up memories of happier times and indulge in a farewell to Europe that is as breathtaking as it is depres- sing.
