Schooled in Wine – Unit 3: Vineyard Practices
UNIT 3 Vineyard Practices Conserving H2O ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES L’Ecole No 41 is a leader and active proponent of the growing sustainable farming program in the Walla Walla Valley. VINEA (The Winegrower’s Sustainable Trust) is a voluntary group of Walla Walla Valley winegrowers pursuing sustainability in the valley. VINEA works with Oregon’s LIVE (Low-Input Viticulture and Enology) to provide internationally accredited third-party certification to winegrowers in the Pacific Northwest, one of the highest certifications in the world for sustainable viticulture. Sustainability is particularly relevant in the field of viticulture where the vineyard is seen as a large integrated farm, where plant, animal and microbial life, aided by soil and water quality, contribute to the overall health of the environment and therefore the development and quality of the crop. Protecting the health of the vineyard’s The Walla Walla Valley receives only soil and surrounding environment is intrinsic to enhancing terroir. 8-12 inches of rain annually, so while All of L’Ecole’s Estate wines are Certified Sustainable and Salmon Safe. the need to irrigate our vineyards is essential, it must be managed Benefits of Sustainable Farming meticulously. Age Is Just a Number. It´S Totally Irrelevant, Unless of Course, You Happen to Be a Bottle of Wine!
AGE IS JUST A NUMBER. IT´S TOTALLY IRRELEVANT, UNLESS OF COURSE, YOU HAPPEN TO BE A BOTTLE OF WINE! - JOAN COLLINS WELCOME TO THE WINE SELECTION OF NORDA! This is a predominately American wine list. We serve wine from all over America but mainly from Oregon. Oregon are bordered by Washington on the north and California in the south. We also serve amazing Riesling from New York State on the east coast. In the kitchen we focus on the combination of the Swedish West coast and the East coast in America and our wine list’s ambition is to make a full circle. We can proudly say that we have the largest selection of Oregon wine on our list, outside of Oregon of course. Pinot Noir is the main grape variety in Oregon and we hope you will revel our wide range of delicious Pinot Noirs. If you are up for European wine we have the classics and some great wildcards once in a while. Enjoy, and remember seven days without wine makes one weak! On behalf of the Oregon wine industry, the Oregon Wine Board is pleased to inform that the restaurant Norda has won a 2017 Oregon Wine A-List Award. The A-List Awards is a partnership between the Oregon Wine Press and the Oregon Wine Board recognizing restaurants across the world displaying enthusiasm for Oregon wine and a deep appreciation of the diverse regions, varieties and producers of Oregon. Wines marked green are LIVE-certified. A Ndrew R Ich Vintner
A NDREW RICH VINTNER Sourcing fruit from select Oregon and Washington vineyards, Andrew Rich has been crafting distinctive wines in his adopted state since 1995. He handcrafts wines using grapes from the Pacific Northwest's finest vineyards. Some of the region's most respected examples of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Rhone and Bordeaux style blends as well as a cultish Gewurztraminer Ice Wine...are created by Andrew at his winery in the Carlton Winemakers' Studio (the nation's first "green" cooperative winemaking facility) located in Carlton, Oregon. Andrew Rich 2006 Roussanne - 12/750ml Net $180 The great white grape of France’s Rhône Valley was first planted in Eastern Washington in the late 90s, so it’s not surprising that most people are still unaware of its existence. That’s too bad, because Roussanne is already proving itself to be well-suited to the Columbia Valley’s warm, dry climate. Sourced from Ciel du Cheval, Alder Ridge, and Lonesome Springs, my 2006 was fer- mented slowly in neutral French oak, remaining on the lees until bottling in July of 2007. The nose reveals scents of flowers, honey, minerals and stone fruits, while the palate is rich, structured, and somehow elegant all at once. Drink now and over the next two or three years… ~AR Andrew Rich 2005 Pinot Noir - 12/750ml Net $300 12/375ml Net $162 I would rank the 2005 vintage right up there with 1999 and 2002 as among my best to date. Cooler weather along with some showers at harvest gave us balanced, elegant wines with sane alcohols (13.5 on average) and good acidity.
