The following pages contain a gazetteer of streams, lakes, and ponds as shown by the topographic maps of Texas which were pre­ pared by the United States Geological Survey and, in areas not covered by the topographic maps, by State of Texas county maps and the post-route map of Texas. For many streams a contour map of Texas, prepared in 1899 by Robert T. Hill, was consulted, as well as maps compiled by private surveys, engineering corporations, the State Board of Water Engineers, and the International Boundary Commission. An effort has been made to eliminate errors where practicable by personal reconnaissance. All the descriptions are based on the best available maps, and their accuracy therefore depends on that of the maps. Descriptions of streams in the central part of the State, adjacent to the Bio Grande above Brewster County, and in parts of Brewster, Terrell, Bowie, Casg, Btirleson, Brazos, Grimes, Washington, Harris, Bexar, Wichita, Wilbarger, Montague, Coke, and Graysoh counties were compiled by means of topographic maps and are of a good degree of accuracy. It should be understood, however, that all statements of elevation, length, and fall are roughly approximate. Pearson, Ph.D. Baton Rouge, Louisiana Principal Investigator ABSTRACT A Phase 1 marine, cultural resources, remote-sensing survey was conducted of a 1190-acre area located on Halfmoon Reef in Matagorda Bay, Matagorda County, Texas. The study was undertaken by Coastal Environments, Inc., of Corpus Christi, Texas. The area surveyed consists of the majority of Halfmoon Reef, a large sand bank extending into Matagorda Bay. Some portion of Halfmoon Reef is to be selected for a project intended to reestablish oyster beds. The cultural resources survey encompassed several Texas State Tracts identified by the Texas Historical Commission as high probability areas relative to submerged cultural resources. In addition, the area surveyed included the former location of the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse, which stood from 1858 to 1943. Remote-sensing instruments used consisted of a marine magnetometer, side-scan sonar, and a fathometer. A differential GPS system was used for positioning and navigation. A review of pertinent geological, archeological, and historical records was undertaken prior to the survey to determine the cultural resources potential of the project area. The only cultural features of interest identified in the survey were magnetic anomalies and features identified on side-scan sonar records that appear to represent elements associated with the iron frame foundation of the former Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse.

    Rev. 01 15 Jan 2008 STP 3 & 4 Environmental Report 2.4 Ecology 2.4.1 Terrestrial Ecology 2.4.1.1 Site Habitats and Communities The STP site is located within the coastal prairie ecosystem of east Texas, the southernmost tip of the tallgrass prairie system prevalent in the Midwest (Reference 2.4-1). This area is typified by low elevation, generally less than 60 feet above mean sea level (MSL), with open prairie habitat interspersed with creek and river drainages flowing toward the Gulf Coast marshes. The larger drainages often have bottomland forests. Much of the original coastal prairie in Matagorda County has been converted to croplands or is now in pasture. The STP site is immediately west of the Colorado River, approximately 10 miles from the river’s confluence with Matagorda Bay. The STP site lies in a largely rural area, with the dominant land use being agricultural fields and pasture. Current land use at the approximate 12,220-acre STP site is discussed in Section 2.2 and shown in Figure 2.2-1. Approximately 65 acres of the STP site consist of generating facilities, buildings, parking areas, a switchyard, and transmission line corridors associated with STP 1 & 2 (Subsection 2.2.1.1). Based on National Wetland Inventory coverage, there are approximately 7,600 acres of various types of wetlands within the STP boundary. These include 7,068 acres of lake habitat (including the Main Cooling Reservoir [MCR] and Essential Cooling Pond [ECP]), 369 acres of freshwater emergent wetland, 119 acres of freshwater forested/shrub wetland, 25 acres of freshwater pond, and 10 acres of riverine wetlands.

Treece Texas A&M University Sea Grant College Program The historical average for Texas aquaculture production is: Estimated Totals from approximately 180 operations on TDA aquaculture licenses list / Approx. 8,000 ac./Approx. 30,000,000 pounds,/ Approx. US $60,000,000 Total Value. Estimated $360 million/yr total economic impact on state’s economy when jobs, feed, and other economical benefits are included. Channel catfish has remained the largest aquaculture crop in Texas since 2008. In 2008, there was an estimated production of 28 million pounds produced on 3,500 surface acres of water, and about the same in 2009 with 45 producers and 3 processors in 2009, which dropped to 2 in 2010. Catfish is also the largest value aquaculture crop in the state. According to Peter Woods, Fisheries Specialist with Texas AgriLife Extension, “ Most of the catfish production area in 2009, about 3,000 acres, was in the Coastal Bend, and the remainder (500 acres) is in upper East Texas. The value of the fish remained relatively constant at $0.80/lb live weight for a total value of approximately $22.4 million. Entry and exit of the industry balanced out with little-or-no change in total acreage under water from 2007 levels to 2008.” A few farms did exit the industry in 2009 and even more in 2010. There was a more dramatic change in the industry in 2010, according to Peter Woods. The number of producers dropped from 45 to about 40.

    NOAA TECHNICAL REPORTS National Marine Fisheries Service, Circulars The major responsibilities of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) are to monitor and assess the abundance and geographic distribution of fishery resources, to understand and predict fluctuations in the quantity and distribution of t hese resources, and to establish levels for optimum use of the resources. NMFS is also charged with the development and implementation of policies for managing national fishing grounds, development and enforcement of domestic fiSheries regulations. surveillance of foreign fishing off United States coastal waters, and the development and enforcement of international fishery agreements and policies. NMFS also assists the fishing industry through marketing service and economic analysis programs, and mortgage insurance and vessel construction subsidies. It collects. analyzes, and publishes statistics on various phases of the industry. The NOAA Technical Report NMFSCIRC series continues a series that has been in existence since 1941. The Circulars are technical publications of general interest intended to aid conservation and management. Pubfications that review in considerable detail and at a hi~h technical level certain broad areas of research appear in this series. Technical papers originating in economics studies and from management investigations appear m the Circular series. NOAA Technical Re ports NMFS CIRC are available free in limited numbers to governmental agencies, both Federal and State. They are also available in exchange for other scientific and technical publications in the marine sciences.
