A drive through the Hill Country will take the visitor across rolling hills, crisscrossed with many streams and rivers. The Edwards Plateau dominates a large portion of the Texas Hill Country and is honeycombed with thousands of caves. Several aquifers lie beneath the Texas Hill Country. The Edwards Aquifer is one of nine major state aquifers. It covers 4,350 square miles and eleven counties. It provides drinking and irrigation water as well as recreational opportunities for millions of people. San Antonio obtains its entire municipal water supply from the Edwards Aquifer and is one of the largest cities in the world to rely solely on a single ground-water source. Springs are created when the water in an aquifer naturally emerges at the surface. Central Texas was once a land of many springs. Statewide, it is estimated that Texas currently has nearly 1,900 known springs. The majority of these springs are located within the Texas Hill Country. Many of the streams that flow through the rocky, tree-shaded hills of Central Texas are fed by springs. These streams are home to many species of fish, amphibians, plants and insects, which depend on a steady flow of clean water for survival. Some of these species (salamanders in particular) are found only in these spring- fed environments. -

GRAY WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT FEINTING OFFICE 1919 GAZETTEER OF STREAMS OF TEXAS. Prepared under the direction of GLENN A. GRAY. INTRODUCTION. The following pages contain a gazetteer of streams, lakes, and ponds as shown by the topographic maps of Texas which were pre pared by the United States Geological Survey and, in areas not covered by the topographic maps, by State of Texas county maps and the post-route map of Texas. For many streams a contour map of Texas, prepared in 1899 by Robert T. Hill, was consulted, as well as maps compiled by private surveys, engineering corporations, the State Board of Water Engineers, and the International Boundary Commission. An effort has been made to eliminate errors where practicable by personal reconnaissance. All the descriptions are based on the best available maps, and their accuracy therefore depends on that of the maps. Descriptions of streams in the central part of the State, adjacent to the Bio Grande above Brewster County, and in parts of Brewster, Terrell, Bowie, Casg, Btirleson, Brazos, Grimes, Washington, Harris, Bexar, Wichita, Wilbarger, Montague, Coke, and Graysoh counties were compiled by means of topographic maps and are of a good degree of accuracy. It should be understood, however, that all statements of elevation, length, and fall are roughly approximate. The Geological Survey topographic maps used are cited in the de scriptions of the streams and are listed below. -

CULTURAL RESOURCES REMOTE-SENSING SURVEY OF HALFMOON REEF, MATAGORDA BAY, MATAGORDA COUNTY, TEXAS November 2010 FINAL REPORT By Charles E. Pearson, Ph.D. Baton Rouge, Louisiana Principal Investigator ABSTRACT A Phase 1 marine, cultural resources, remote-sensing survey was conducted of a 1190-acre area located on Halfmoon Reef in Matagorda Bay, Matagorda County, Texas. The study was undertaken by Coastal Environments, Inc., of Corpus Christi, Texas. The area surveyed consists of the majority of Halfmoon Reef, a large sand bank extending into Matagorda Bay. Some portion of Halfmoon Reef is to be selected for a project intended to reestablish oyster beds. The cultural resources survey encompassed several Texas State Tracts identified by the Texas Historical Commission as high probability areas relative to submerged cultural resources. In addition, the area surveyed included the former location of the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse, which stood from 1858 to 1943. Remote-sensing instruments used consisted of a marine magnetometer, side-scan sonar, and a fathometer. A differential GPS system was used for positioning and navigation. A review of pertinent geological, archeological, and historical records was undertaken prior to the survey to determine the cultural resources potential of the project area. The only cultural features of interest identified in the survey were magnetic anomalies and features identified on side-scan sonar records that appear to represent elements associated with the iron frame foundation of the former Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse.
