SKIJORING for MS 2020 RULES Riding to THE CURE Bonnyville Rodeo Grounds March 22, 2020 CHECK IN @ 10:00am – 11:30am Event Starts @ 12pm DEFINITIONS Skijoring: (pronounced /ˈskiːʃɜːrɪŋ/) is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog (or dogs) or a motor vehicle. It is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, meaning "ski driving". Although skijoring is said to have originated as a mode of winter travel, it is currently primarily a competitive sport Rider: Horseback rider, riding in a western saddle with horn Slider: skier or snowboarder being pulled by horse & rider Team: Horse, rider, & slider Rope: 30 – 60 foot (9 – 18 metres) in length. Must be dallied around saddle horn, not tied to anything or anyone. Handles or loops in the rope are NOT permitted. CATEGORIES - Youth Division (10 – 17 years of age) - Adult Division ENTRY (by donation to MS Society): $10 / person / entry ($20 / team) - Circuit Event - Timed event. A signed waiver is required by Rider & Slider before competition begins. 2. Marshals or organizers may excuse any competitor at any time (human or horse) from competition for behaving in an unsafe or unsound manner. 3. Circuit Event: a. Timed event where horse and rider pull slider through an obstacle course (examples: pylons, bales, berms, rings, jumps). b. Each team will run the circuit at least once (if time permits there will be a second heat). c. Time starts when horse’s nose crosses start line. d. Time ends when horse’s nose crosses the finish line. e. The slider must finish in an upright position on at least one ski, with rope in hand when crossing the finish line. f. Both slider’s boots must cross the finish line. g. Time penalties (as described below in the Penalties section) will be given if obstacles are missed. h. Teams with best times will move on to the Finals i. Winning team is fastest time (combined time from all team’s runs). 4. Staging between runs. Be respectful of others and be READY to skijor! a. Each team is allowed 2 minutes to complete staging and begin the race. After this allotted time has expired, the competitors will be asked to leave the staging area and be given a no time for that heat. b. The allotted 2-minute time period will begin at the declaration of a clear track. 5. If the slider drops the rope BEFORE crossing the start line, they will be allowed a restart immediately after the team’s fault. The 2 minute rule restarts upon declaration that the track is again clear. 6. Substitutions are allowed for any team member (horse, rider, or slider), ONLY under the following circumstances: a. The team must inform the event organizer. b. The substitute team member (horse, rider, or slider) is eligible to compete and has signed a waiver. c. The team member that is being substituted out is unable to compete due to injury, family emergency, or other reason acceptable to the event organizer. 7. All participants (including horse) should be in physical shape to participate in an extreme sport. 8. Horses may only run with a maximum of THREE teams. 9. Riders & Sliders may separately compete a maximum of THREE times (three separate teams). 10. All sliders must wear approved snow sport helmets, gloves, and proper footwear. Eye protection is recommended. 11. It is recommended that horses also have protective gear for their legs. 12. Finishing the Race: the Slider must finish in an upright position and on at least one ski, with rope in hand when crossing the finish line. Both slider’s boots must cross the finish line. 13. Pylons: Both ski tips & both boots must go around a pylon as per course design, or it is considered missed. Riders & Sliders will have an opportunity to walk course on foot before competition starts (must be off the course by 11:30 am). 15. No horses, riders, or sliders permitted on the field/course except during their designated run. 16. Order of go will be determined by draw and posted at event day check in (by 11:30 am) or possibly earlier on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MSaintPURDY) PENALTIES The following will result in a no time: - Abuse of an animal on or off the track or evidence that an act of abuse has occurred prior to or during the competition. CIRCUIT EVENT: - A five second penalty is assessed for each missed jump. - A two second penalty is assessed for each missed ring, pylon, or bale. - Any horse or slider touching the course boundary line or breaking pattern is disqualified. EQUIPMENT 1. Horses to be ridden in western saddle with horn. 2. Ropes must be minimum 30 feet in length & maximum 60 feet in length. 3. Handles or loops in the rope are NOT permitted. 4. Ropes must be dallied around saddle horn. No tying of ropes to anything/anyone. 5. All sliders must wear approved snow sport helmets, gloves, and proper footwear. Eye protection is recommended. 6.
